OH MY GOODNESS!!!

I've always known that nobody has their own limbo. I've always known that Saito & Fischer are both in the same limbo. I've also known that Cobb & Ariadne go to the same limbo as Saito & Fischer. I was probably getting frustrated when I typed "enter his limbo." HOWEVER, I'm trying to say that they have to have linked to Fischer to enter limbo through him! Otherwise, they wouldn't enter limbo just by falling asleep. And the only way to know for certain that the next level is limbo is to die or follow someone via whatever technique links everyone to the dream share in the first place. And, since they didn't die, the dream machine is the only answer!

Do you honestly believe that these people are all telepathically dream sharing? That machine serves more of a purpose than just sedation.

DISCLAIMER: It's been weeks since I've seen it and only saw it once, so I could be way off...

Perhaps Cobb can enter limbo via the machine without being linked to Fischer at that dream level, because Cobb has been to limbo before and it contains the dreamspace that he once constructed there. No one else would be able to do that, because they haven't been there before, but Cobb can and Ariadne can follow him.

Dude. Please answer the question. How does Cobb run into Saito when HE did not link to him. This goes against your theory.

Remember once you are linked AT THE BEGINNING (in the plane) you are linked until you wake up/seadtive times out. So no, they are not "telepathically" dreaming, they do not have to because THEY WERE LINKED in the plane and will always be linked until they wake up.

+1

I believe the only link that ultimately matters in regard to limbo is the link in the real world (in this case, on the plane).

They gave themselves a very heavy sedative in the real world - like being put under for surgery.

In a "regular" dream, if you die - you wake up in the real world. But, in this case, they would not "wake up" because of the heavy narcotic - at least, not until the narcotic wore off (approx. 10 hours). So, if you died in your dream before that 10 hours was up - you were in danger of going into limbo.

After 10 hours, you can wake up in the real world - no matter what level you are in
[Show spoiler](just as Mal and Cobb eventually did by committing suicide on the train tracks.)

The danger of going into limbo was being stuck there for what seemed like 100 years, and even, "getting lost/stranded".

I think the "kicks" can be confusing because people wonder how "killing themselves" worked to get them out - but again, after the 10 hours was up, this was essentially used as a technical way to ascend back up the levels and awake simaltaneously (I'm assuming, so they all wake up at the same time and hide all the evidence).

Did I confuse you more?

That is pretty funny but I'm sure Nolan had his reasons for doing it the way he did it.

It might have been funny, if it didn't totally miss the point that Cobb was living on the run, not living in France. Big difference.

What was the first thing Miles (Michael Caine) said to Cobb when he came to visit him at his school in France? He asked "are you sure it's safe for you to be here?" His wisecrack about exterdition aside, Miles then commented that in his case, "they might make it work". An American on the run, accused of a murder committed in France, is not going to be safe settling down in France.

Oh, come on, dude. I know what you are talking about, but I also think that strip was totally meant to be a joke, that's all.

Sure. I'll answer that question again. I have answered it several times already. Cobb "runs into" Saito even though he did not link to him because he would have either died from the wounds that Mal inflicted on him and therefore would have dropped into limbo, or when Fischer wakes up in the hospital level the link Cobb has to that level is destroyed, therefore without having been kicked back, he will become lost and drop into limbo. The key to that scene is understanding that Cobb and Ariadne are only piggybacking into limbo along Fishcer. Otherwise, Cobb wouldn't find himself face down in the ocean after that scene with Mal and Ariadne wouldn't be able to ride the kick ladder back. Cobb would just stand up after Ariadne & Fischer leave and walk out of the building to go find Saito. Why does he wake up face first in the ocean if he didn't just fall into limbo himself? EVERYTIME we see someone enter limbo, they find themselves in the drink. So, when Cobb finds Saito, he has been dropped into limbo. Why is that? Something has to explain that. And, my theory is that he & Ariadne could not have been completely in limbo before. They must have had a path/connection back to the hospital level. Cobb became seperated from that path/connection and was forced back into limbo as a fresh rebooted experience.

But, in turn, it doesn't make sense for Cobb & Ariadne to go to limbo by falling asleep without linking to Fischer in level 3. That means that they would be lost in limbo. Therefore, Cobb wouldn't wake up in the ocean and Ariadne & Fischer would wake up in the plane when they jump off of the building. They wouldn't ride the kick ladder back as we see them do.

A joke to you, perhaps... just wise-arse devil's-advocate nitpickery to me. Just another schmuck who thought he'd "poked a major hole" in the plot, when really he just wasn't paying attention.

For my own clarity in following this discussion, which level are you referring to as "the hospital level"? The places where there are dreamers hooked up to a machine, as I remember them, are:

Plane - real world
Van - dream level 1
Hotel - dream level 2
Snow Fortress - dream level 3

It would be funnier if it made sense, but it doesn't.

Ok. My memory is hazy. Did the film make it clear that it was a hospital or are we just referring to it as that because Fischer's dad was on his deathbed there?
