Shoot 'em Up is not over the top, its a very realistic film. It is completely conceivable that a single man, armed with a carrot, can defeat 100's of machine gun toting assasins. Its pretty common actually.

[Show spoiler]I loved Shoot 'em Up. Ridiculous and fantastic.

Next greatest rental: “Inland Empire.”

Umm….yeah…okay…it’s interesting as a film (interesting cameramanship, and some scenes scared the crap out of me), but it’s pretty darn long and slow, and jam-loaded with scenes that make absolutely no sense. I don’t think I can ever interpret this film’s plot, much less articulate it.

The following smilie shall represent my overall feelings about this film:

3/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: NA, film: 3.5/5)

Al, you didnt get it? C'mon man, its right there if you look at it from the rabbits perspective you can see how the deep an intertwining themes pull it all together. I mean, its a powerful message that makes complete sense if you just embrace the rabbits side.

Here....

[Show spoiler] Just kidding. The entire thing is a series of WTF sights and sounds that means nothing. $100.00 says Lynch has no idea what it means and made it all up as he went along.

Trippy, exhausting, but impossible to turn off.

Yes and no. The list has a mixture of new and old. Of course it's the hot novel of the moment, but anyone that's read it can attest to it being among the very best popular fiction novels of all-time. Even critics rate it that high.

Yes!!! That makes total sense! It's ingenious!!!

[Show spoiler]

I could (almost) make out certain ideas and themes. I'm guessing that the characters were being manipulated in some kind of alternate reality by the weird Polish gypsy black magic or whatever it was, and the lines between reality and fantasy became blurred (kinda like "Perfect Blue"). This also paralells the interplay between reality and fantasy in Hollywood films and possibly Hollywood lifestyles in general.

But yeah, it's all cobbled together in a rather convoluted and plotless fashion. I don't know if I like it or hate it!

It's an experience, that's for sure.

Also, I'm starting to wonder if Frank the bunny from "Donnie Darko" came from the family of bunnies from this film...

See, in Hollywood, you gotta know someone, or have family connections to get work, even if you are a 7' tall bunny.

Gotta give the brain a rest…so I watched “Death Race 2000.”

Not quite as gnarly and gritty as the newer Jason Statham film, but the original film has a nice cheesy 70’s exploitation flavor that I know Tarantino is drying to adopt some day (then again, I guess that’s what “Death Proof” was for). Parts of this are silly and the production value is a bit cheap. Dialogue is pretty lame; acting is a mixed bag. But the action scenes and violence do not disappoint and the satire is interesting. It’s also interesting to see a very young David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone.

Its B-rated drivel, but I liked it!

4/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 3/5, film: 3/5)

This Blu-Ray looks pretty good all things considering. Sharpness and detail are excellent. There are a few specks and blemishes, but the image is still mostly clean (in fact, for this type of movie print damage would be welcome). Colors are decently vibrant, and contrast seems alright. Sound quality is okay. The overall package is awesome; lots of extras, the cover is reversible (and classy), and a nice little booklet is included.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 3.5/5

[Show spoiler] If we see, and are explained to, the nature of sexual curiosity with the children, why do we need more symbolism with the weather scientists? Were they trying to say that among youth, it is innocent and pure, and among adults it is pervy? The weather guys certainly were pervy, for sure. I could never figure that whole scene out, or how it fits, or what its trying to say.
Their presence in the film definitely is random, but that's one of the things I like about it. The director does come cooky things in this one and he's got a real unique style. I really think it's part of his effort to show how much sex and nudity is built up in society, though his portrayal of that isn't related to the children storywise. It's more of a support to his earlier filming of the girl and his play on our anticipation.... which occurs both firsthand for us, the viewers, as well as in the film as well with the adults. I feel the weather people are also tied to the story (weakly, but there's a purpose) because the children find the balloon and I think he makes a few points in that scene.

Anyways, there's some random cooky stuff in this one but I'm kinda diggin that aspect of the film. I think I'll like it a lot more when I watch it again
