That's right folks...you buy ten movies you get an A3 for free.

Toshiba has resorted to giving away players for free now that the $98 didnt seem to do much.
That's not the way it works, you get 5 by mail, two in the box and get to pick three. So only three get counted as sales.

If this is truly how the numbers are counted for Nielsen especially, that is not good. It's also not fair or realistic. If the deal is you get 10 movies with a player, then the movies should Not count (not one of them)!

If that's true, than that is much better, but I still don't think even those 3 movies should count, because they were given away as part of a promotion for the player...!

I doubt Videoscan/Nielsen accept giveaways in the count. When they poll the retailers, it's for actual sales.

The Amazon popularity rankings are a different thing than sales. Always have been.

Hopefully this isn't a 'discovery' for anyone.

Amazon isn't a true 'sales' chart atall. It is a marketing device.

It includes pre-orders and products given away (bundles with players for example). Also it is not clear whether the chart is based on volume of units or value of units (MSRP).

For these reasons the Amazon chart would only be of interest when there are no offers going on and it's possible to observe a rough trend (if you look at the top 100 over a longish period). Sadly, there's never a big enough gap between special deals for the trend to show.

So, it's pretty much useless as a market indicator. But it gives the HD DVD fanboys something to squeal excitedly about when the red line goes above the blue one - until they are returned to reality when the Nielsen results come out.

Since it's only 1 point higher, I doubt it, it would be almost impossible to move the YTD at this point.

These sales on BOTH sides are done to manipulate the numbers.

The A3 is discounted by $30, and the 3 movies ring up at $10 each or something like that.

As long as theyre scanned through POS at something more than 0 (and high enough to not be obvious dumping) it counts

I wonder how they will do the 10 free movies at Walmart?

Too bad they don't count for Nielsen's though.

Hey, 1,000 post!

We'll need weeks of more than 71:29 to see YTD moving.

I htink it will finish two or three points higher than it currently is by the end of the year, maybe more.

I'm sure the week of Dec 4th will move the YTD by 2 points alone, barring some major 2-4-1 sale by HD DVD.

So, if you return the discs unopened you can get a refund? It would seen they can't have it both ways. Either they are free, or you're paying for them on a discounted basis.

Did the HMM staff takeoff for the weekend? They didn't update this week's edition yet...

I can't go out and buy more toys if I don't see the %age breakdown by title.

Well, last week they weren't up until I think 3:30pm EST... so I guess we'll have to tailgate until then.

thedigitalbits says that "what with the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States tomorrow, most of Hollywood is MIA this week." So I won't be too surprised if the new issue of HMM doesn't show up.

Never say never. The YTD could be teetering on the edge of changing for all we know, and we may get several 70+:30- weeks that will pull it up a point or two regardless.
A lot of PS3's being sold, thus a lot of new BD owners...not to mention the number of existing Blu people.
