I happen to think that the universe is both immeasurable and limitless in scope, and any perception that we have regarding its true scale is constrained by the tools available to us.

Wrapping one's head around the scale comparison of stars and planets is truly .

You and I think similarly in this regard, for better or for worse (for sake of argument, I'm going with "for better").

The star comparisons are perfect examples of what I brought up, and on which you elaborated with those illustrations. There is really no way to "understand" just how massive those stars are. To think that those Cephei stars are only part of our own galaxy and take up a relatively small percentage of volume within it, and that there are (in all likelihood) many more of those types of stars in other galaxies — and many that are probably even larger than that — which are all contained within the universe...it's just phenomenal and mind-boggling to think/speculate how big the universe actually is.

Apparently they don't teach how to write English in high school nowadays. My wife's latest group of "gifted" young minds are turning in term papers with leet speak and emoticons..

Ditto for me... all the knuckle bashing to write in script did not work out. I just do it in capital letters or use a keyboard.

As far as I know. The numerals are IVXLCDM with no zero. It has left us confused on weather 2000 or 2001 begins a new century. It would have been 2000 if they had invented zero when they first wrote out the Christian calendar.

Got to wonder how the 'no child left behind' policy is working out.

Strange that as we found more stuff out there, we ended up with fewer planets. I think the list would have just grown to become too complex as we added new bodies. Demoting (134340)Pluto in the end was a good thing. Indeed, it is only the second-largest dwarf planet after Eris. Also, its accentric orbit is not like the other eight planets. Just did not fit in with the rest of the bunch.

There were super-continents before Pangaea. I don't think they ever taught that in secondary school, but they should.

That sickens me to the core. "Kids these days..." is something I suppose I can officially say now, even though I thought it'd never happen.

Coming soon are the ubiquitously old-timer staples of "when I was your age" and my personal favorite, "get off my lawn."

They didn't teach cursive where I went to school. In fact I got in quite a bit of trouble as that's how I already wrote (was reading writing well before I went to school), and refused to change it.

I have heard about three supercontinents in earth's history. Computer models on plate tectonics allows us to go to go back to about 1.4 billion years.

Ages in millions of years:
Rodinia(Russian, homeland) - 1,400
Gondwana(Sanskrit, forest of the Gonds) - 700
Pangea(Greek, entire earth) - 170

I read a couple of columns on the subject. If I were an English instructor, I would be distressed; I would give them a failing grade as well. No child left behind, eh? I'll be happy to make arrangements.

This was the lead story in the local newspaper:
The Columbus Dispatch: When an A isn't enough
Quote:
Despite earning good grades and taking honors courses in high school, many students find themselves ill-prepared for college. Some blame grade inflation or unrealistic expectations at the next level.

Yet, 39 percent of those graduates who attended a public college or university in Ohio had to take a remedial math class. Thirteen percent needed developmental English.

At Columbus State Community College, 32 percent of recent high-school graduates were not ready for college-level math, reading or writing last school year.

Wow, that is bad

It is all about not making kids feel bad these days.... However, how big of a blow to your slef esteem would it be to be told you need remedial math and/or English?

I'll add something not taught in (public) school: Evolution

So this begs the question: Why are these colleges letting these people in in the first place?
