Proponents of traditional YCMs may be skeptical despite how good the demos are.
Well, one would have to see how much is discarded but obviously it might also be seen as a worthwhile tradeoff even if some color resolution is lost - the perfect registration imo should count for something, too.

The Friday night screening of Fantasia(1940) also looked (PQ) excellent.

The only issue/consternation expressed by some of the attendees (archivists) was that of the audio, namely, the new digital restoration of the classic Walt Disney animated film didn’t include Deems Taylor's introductions.

You hit the nail on the head, heck Oliver, it’s almost like you attended the Symposium . That is their argument and one of the validating reasons expressed by the presenter for the adoption of their process…..along with the fact that even with standard YCM’s, the color will eventually need some correction anyway, when you un-archive, not to mention the practical savings of less recording time, less physical storage space, less film stock used with their solution.

The intriguing thing about their bayer pattern is that since people see 2 parts green for each part red or blue, instead of just having 3 discrete color channels (RGB), they have 4 color channels (GBRG) to which they assign their bayer pattern and then instead of layering them upon each other, their algorithm rearranges them around to minimize the grain compared to YCM’s.

I’m still not convinced of the merits of this solution over the traditional way of archiving motion pictures but anyway, if you’re interested, a company spokesman will be presenting this process publicly at the ACVL (Association of Cinema & Video Laboratories) at the Library of Congress in early October, so maybe a more detailed report of the process/presentation will be posted online for all to read.

Oooh, if we're going to be unlocking quadrachromatic from a B&W source, there might be use for the Sharp LCDs after all (they'll need to change the colour of one of their primaries, but at least it'll be less of a stupid marketing ploy than the current use, with their magic Yellow push).

And let me know when/if you get a check disc on Kwai, I'm curious what you think.

Thanks for the hint, I will check if anything goes public after the ACVL event.

I think that I would have to see for myself how it looks but if it works as you say (full luma resolution, no misregistration) I would probably prefer it to traditional separations - The luma resolution and registration will be superior and the chroma channels will be affected but not as much. Less grain buildup is another advantage of course.

Of course I also understand about the idea of saving money, film stock and space but I am not interested in that aspect as much

I have to admit that I have no idea what you are talking about as I never watched Fantasia. And to be honest I am kind of glad that I will see it for the first time on Blu-Ray

Default 70mm film fest in Canada, finally!

Just wanted to highlight this for Canadian members.

We've finally got an opportunity to view large format films. A must for any film fan.

The Museum of Civilization in Gatineau Quebec is holding a 70mm film festival. Follow the link.

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2010/canada/index.htm

Looks like Mr. Harris will attending and holding a Q&A session.

See everyone there.

That includes you Shark.

PS: They are showing Lawrence on the 25th. Ok, who's not going to that one?

The cinema is in the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec across the Ottawa river from Ottawa the Capital of Canada.

The museum has two cinemas an IMAX 3D/Omnimax theatre that holds 300 and a 35mm/70mm theatre that holds 500.

The 70mm projectors are Cinemeccanica Victoria 8's running changeover. Sound is processed through a Dolby CP-200 cinema processor with 5 stage speakers, 10- surrounds and subs.

I strongly suggest to come on Friday in time for Vertigo and then continue with Baraka. Then attend all Saturday to catch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Spartacus and of course LoA - 5 70mm movies in 1 1/2 days

If RAH is indeed attending you can be sure that you'll get to see excellent prints of his three restorations (Vertigo, Spartacus, LoA).

Absolutely agree with your suggestion. This is a rare opportunity for us, and I'm going to take full addvantage of it.

Been trying to attend a 70mm festivals in the UK, and Germany, for years. But work has always interferred. Not going to let it happen this time around.

Spartacus should be good, as a 91' restoration print is being shown.

Hrm. I swear I posted this like a year ago, but my searching has failed.

Still, nice to see them releasing the list finally. Yeah, might have to do a post-TIFF road trip.

Think we both did. But back then it was still a rumor, with no confirmation.

Might is the incorrect aux verb to be using. WILL be making a post- TIFF road trip is the correct response.

So much of this thread is NOT about Blu-ray.

I try to learn but to no avail. Why is this thread here when it talks not much about blu-ray?

Love and respect you guys but....
