Yamaha's YPAO is a great tool that should be used. It not only balances the speaker levels (which is what you are doing with the SPL meter), but also adjust for speaker distance and equalizes to correct problems caused by the room & contents. The only problem I've had is that it tends to favor the "Large" setting for the speakers. That can be changed manually (if you have subwoofers) but make sure you set the LFE & Base Out to the Subwoofer and set the crossover frequency. I still use my SPL meter to fine tune the speakers after.
