Default Talk me out of this......

I know there are 20 threads about similar tv's but,

Best Buy has the
Samsung 58" Class / 1080p / 600Hz / Plasma HDTV
Model: PN58C550G1F
SKU: 9790779

for $1399.......
and after several days of going through thread after thread I'm really starting to lean towards this tv.

Originally I was set on a Panasonic G series due to it supposedly having superior color, but am worried about all the issues. So I'm wanting any and all opinions of this tv and any other suggestions.

By the way, I currently have a Sony 37'' rear projection (720P ) and sit around 9 feet away from it.

So will a 58" be too big?

Also, this will be in the basement with no windows.

Like I said before, any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the 58" would be to big. However, I love big TV's so I am probably biased.

I've got a 58" set, and it's in no way too big. For that price, I'd say do it.

It's not too big. I sit about 7.5 feet from my 58" V10. THX standards call for a distance between 6 and 8.5 feet.

Does anyone have this tv? People either give it 4 or 5 stars on Amazon, with the only real problem being that there shipped tv's have cracked screens (hopefully due to a shipping error). Thanks so far for all the posts, keep em' coming.

Samsung plasmas are beautiful! I've been doing a ton of research and when the time comes to replace my bedroom tv it will more than likely be a sammy plasma. I don't think that you will in any way be upset with your decision and 9 feet is about right for that size. I have a 55 Sammy A950 and sit about 8 or 9 feet from it and it looks great. Good luck with your decision.

The bigger, the better. It doesn't matter how small the room!

I bought a 52" thinking that it might be a bit too big for my tastes. Once I mounted it on my wall and turned it on, it instantly became "too small." I've kicked myself for not going with a 60" ever since.

As the title says, to talk you out of it, so here is goes, I hope your ready for my reasons why you shouldn't get this:

Ummm, ummmmm.... hmmmmm... lets see... ummmmm....

Ummmm... and another thing is that... ummmmm

Sorry, I couldn't come up with anything... Just do it, your gonna love it...
We all promise you that. going from a 37 rear proj. to this, your gonna kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

In my bedroom, going from a 37 to a 40 put a big smile on my face, and I can't imagine what your gonna feel like.

They also have this Panasonic i've been looking at,its even less than the Sammy now.And with the 3 years no interest financing, very tempting. The only thing that scares me about Samsung is i've heard their customer service is bad.But i would like to know how these 2 tv's compare, anybody prefer one over the other?

I saw that t.v. too. The issue I've heard is that, with Panasonic, the G series is much better than the S series. They also both have problems with "floating blacks".

There is a thread on this site's Plasma section, I think it is called "Sammy or Panny" where they go into the this and everyone pretty much said that the Panny G series was better than the Sammy. But the floating blacks thing has me paranoid about Panasonic.

So, I don't know.

But this thread is really talking me into the Sammy though.

Here's another question.

If I do get the t.v., I'll be picking it up myself (longbed truck). So, do I need to keep it upright while transporting or can I lay it down? I wouldn't want to screw the t.v. up before I even get it.

DO NOT lay it down flat. Much of the overall weight is the glass, and glass stength is weakest when supported horizontally by the edges. Think of that pane of glass bouncing up and down as you drive. It won't take much to initiate a stress crack, and from there it will continue to propagate. Oh, you'll hear folks chime-in about how they did it without any problems, and how the manufacturer's warnings are only meant for stacking purposes. Bull$hit. Don't buy into it. There is a reason the boxes specifically state to keep them upright. Is it 100% certain you'll damage your set transporting it flat? Of course not, but do you really want to take the chance when there is no need to?

Just gonna toss this out there but has the thought of a projector possibly come into play? If you have light control and the space it may be worth considering

Note to self, "Don't lay down the t.v.". Thanks for the input, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
