Defiantly pick up 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's cheap, looks great, sci-fi classic.

We seem to have similar tastes in some regards, I'd recommend: Disctrict 9, Let the Right One In, and Moon.

I'd say 95% of my collection and wishlist is made up of genre films. I think they have a ton of rewatchability. You already have a lot of titles that I would recommend, but here's a few it looks like you don't already have:

Big Trouble in Little China
The Dark Crystal
The Evil Dead series
The House of the Devil
Mad Max (coming out 10/05)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ('74)
Hellraiser
Predator
The Neverending Story
Tremors (coming out 11/09)
The Warriors

I've always been left bewildered by the term "genre film." Surely every film falls into a genre?

I'm honestly shocked that Serenity would get a mention in your list but not Contact or Close Encounters of the Third Kind for Sci-fi.

Yeah, those too just forgot about them at the moment.

+1

Of course, some films fall into more than one genre. One of my favorite examples is the vampire/sci-fi "Lifeforce." Now that's a film that needs a good Bluray release ASAP. The non-anamorphic DVD does little justice to the film.

Some of my favorite films fall into more than one genre, or define their own genre. Prestige, for example. Its neither pure sci-fi or pure drama-thriller. You really can't classify it without misrepresenting it.

+1 Exactly what I'd suggest too. LOVE EM!!

Also as suggested by bytor, Dark City is a solid sci-fi pic.
Evil Dead is definately a good cult horror flick!

Others:
The Decent
Sunshine
Trick R Treat and Darkman have a bit of dark humor thrown in
12 Monkeys

I am not a big horror fan, so I could not say which ones would be must haves other than the ones that end with the word "Dead" or the obvious classics like the original Halloween. Here are some of the "must have" genre films, IMHO (I could list several more, but I tried to keep it as short as possible):

The Godfather Collection (Please, . . . "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.")
Léon: The Professional ("EVERYONE!" LOL! I love Oldman in this one.)
The Replacement Killers (great Chow Yun-Fat flick)
Heat (Pacino and DeNiro in their prime. 'nuff said)
Apocalypse Now (One of Brando's finest, and Martin Sheen NOT trying to be funny - release date 10/18/10)
Band of Brothers (if you haven't seen it, YOU NEED TO!)
Full Metal Jacket (Kubrick at his best)
Man with No Name Trilogy (Eastwood, doin' his thing; saying very little, chewing on a cigar, and kickin' arse).
Alien Anthology (eggs incubating inside you, chest bursting action, acid for blood, and S. Weaver havin' a good ol' time throughout - release date 10/26/10)
Predator (whichever one you like-hey, it's got TWO Governors in it! "I ain't got time to bleed.")
Terminator ("It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.")
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (with my fingers extended to do that thing they do, "thugh, thugh, thugh, thugh, thuuuuugh.")
Mad Max (Mel acting mad, who would've thought it? - release date 10/05/10)
Pulp Fiction (come on, it's got Travolta dancin')
Bourne Trilogy (love all three, but still like the first one the best. Great fight sequences and storylines)
Gladiator (great story, and Crowe is awesome in it. "I have only one more life to take. Then it is done.")
Fight Club (always enjoy watching this one)
Akira (if you like anime, then you know this one)
Ghost in the Shell (see above)
Monsters, Inc (great Pixar film, most if not all of Pixar's are though)
Snow White ("The one that started it all")
Wizard of Oz (if you grew up w/ it, it's a must have)
Memento (if you have never seen it, watch it, grab something to eat, then watch it again immediately. Trust me.)
The Machinist (It's a pretty good movie, imho. Christian Bale nailed it, and to think he made Batman Begins immediately after this one. Watch it and you'll trip out on that fact alone).
Seven (a great David Fincher film - release date 9/14/10)
Fearless (a great story, and the fight sequences in this one are amazing)
Kiss of the Dragon (if you are a fan of Jet Li, and you haven't seen this one, then shame on you)
Enter the Dragon (Bruce Lee in Hi-Def!)
Seven Samurai (it has inspired countless other films - release date 10/19/10)
Say Anything (for that 80's vibe, and just to listen to the song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel while Cusack holds up that iconic box)
10 Things I Hate About You (a guilty pleasure, love to see Heath Ledger singin' in it)
Snatch (All around great cast, story, and action, but watching Brad Pitt in this one is a trip in and of itself).

I was going to list these, but you already have them in your collection:
Blade Runner
Pans Labyrinth
Matrix (or the Ultimate Matrix Collection)
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
The Shining

Default Do you get into certain genre moods?

I had a hard time trying to think of a way to word the title so if a mod thinks of a better way that's fine by me. But onto the question. Do you ever get in a mood to watch a string of a certain type of movie? Like right now I am watching The Pacific and my fiancé and I have a whole pile of war Blu rays off to the side along with BOB to watch in a row. I have done this with many other genres of movies also. I was just wondering if others do this also or do you just watch any anything?

most definitely!

along the same lines, when i finished (and during) Band of Brothers i couldn't watch anything else because everything else seemed so boring and "quiet". i was on a mini war-film kick, even though my favorite genre is slow burning dramas.

so after finishing Band of Brothers, i rented the Call of Duty games and played them non-stop for a few weeks and watched a few war films and other loud, big action films.

same goes for horror films. i usually have no interest to watch horror movies near Halloween oddly enough, but other times, yes. and when i do, i watch quite a few of them in a row for a few days / weeks until it wears off and i move on to something else.

happens to me quite a bit with all sorts of genres and types of films

Cool I'm glad I'm not alone. I feel I will be playing lots of Call Of Duty 2 also. I figure we will be watching war movies and shows only for the next 2 weeks or so.
