Default YLOD fixed!

So I had a 1st Gen PS3 that YLOD'd on me within 8 mos. It was replaced by Sony under warranty, and the replacement unit lasted a little over 2 1/2 years. I had relegated this one to loft duty, but out of the 3 units that I have it was actually the one most used (kid's play area). Well, it finally YLOD'd last week.

Today I tried the blow dryer trick using the upside-down-rear-vent method, and low and behold to my surprise the darned thing fired up! Finally I was able to get Force Unleashed SE out without having to open the unit since the fan test trick wouldn't work previously and the unit would YLOD right away. Hopefully I'll be able to get it to stay on long enough to do a data transfer since it's been about 4 mos since I last backed up the data.

Default YLOD Fixed Pt. II

Well, the unit died again before I could get all of the data off it since the Data Transfer Utility required certain things be completed first such as newest FW, trophy sync, and psn accounts linked to profiles. The unit died about 50 mins into trying to get all this done, the slowest being the firmware update and trophy sync over wireless. So I cooked the unit again, then upon login switched to wired and took maybe another 10 mins to sync the remaining trophies and a few other things. It was about 45 mins from there using the Data Transfer Utility, but the unit stayed on. Everything is now on my other Fatty and seems to be working, including my son's Little Big Planet custom levels that he created. I'll be junking this unit now and will buy an external USB HD case for the drive.

But hmm... I wonder if I need another Slim.

I have an 80GB PS3 that came with Motorstorm that I got back in 2008. The other day I noticed it wasn't reading disc. I have to eject the game and put it back in several times, around 4 each time, to get the disc to play.

It isn't freezing up, it plays the game or movie. Is there a simple fix to this or will this warrant a laser eye replacement or a new system upgrade? Any suggestions would be great.

Does that trick of saving the latest firmware update and installing it on the new PS3 actually work? I am asking to help save my friend's data. His 80g bricked on him and he wants to put his larger hdd in the new one and not lose the game saves. Thanks to anyone who knows for sure it works and give me the answer.

I have a quick question...I plan on buying a new slim here in a couple of weeks to replace my launch day 60gig. I was wondering do I have to create a new PSN ID for the Slim or can I just input my current info on the Slim & be done with. The only reason I ask is because my Fat has a intermittent YLOD so I don't know how long she'll hold during the traditional data transfer. Comments? Suggestions? Thanks!!

You can put your current PSN ID on the new Slim and be done with it. You will have to redownload all of your games and stuff though, and you will lose your saves of course by not doing the data transfer.

Thanks!! That what I thought. Luckly, I just did a trophy sync today & game save back-up last week. I'm still gonna try the data transfer option first but at least I have a current back-up to start anew!!

Default Rlod?

I'm really hoping i'm not getting the YLOD here... i've been using my 60GB PS3 a lot, whether it's gaming, watching movies or occasionally using the Internet. I have no problems when it comes to movies, but sometimes it freezes when i play video games.

Just mere minutes ago i was playing Resistance 2 online and the screen became black. I thought the internet just cut off, as that happens to me these days. However, the PS3 shut itself off and it had a flashing red light... (oh jeez i just found out there's a RLOD). Anyways, i put the system back on and it gave me that message how it wasn't turned off properly. I don't even do anything and it happens again. I've just left it alone now since i don't want it to get worse haha.

Is this evidence that i have the RLOD? It would devastate me. lol I also use a cooling fan (just saying )

if you have YLOD your machine wont give you any message.

When you turn it on you'll hear beeping. See a yellow light. Then get a flashing red light. Your machine will cut off immediately.

Alrighty, thanks, i'll go try it out right now. I unplugged all wires, dusted the unit and let it have a break.

Dammit, 2 years and 11 months later, i have the YLOD. I think i'll just pay to get it repaired; i don't want to mess around with it. I know it'll take time, but the only thing i'm concerned about is if the problem would return in the near future.

turn it back on and LMK. If it has YLOD no amount of rest will fix it. YLOD is caused by the CPU/GPU separating from the motherboard.

It's SUPER easy to fix. Though, if you have a warranty it'll be void...

BUT you get to keep ALL your saves and stuff that's on your HDD. If you send it to Sony to fix you WILL lose everything.

If you pay someone you need to make sure they fix the issue, don't over charge you, they don't wipe your HDD, and they give you YOUR machine back.

Sony sends you a referb that's NOT yours... So you lose EVERYTHING on the drive.

Mine is 2.33 years old, hoping the minor issues don't get worse and it lasts at least until I can afford a slim to replace it. Hope yours gets through this, dead PS3s make me sad.

Yeah it definetly is YLOD; everything you described happened lol.

Just the other day though i put all my saves on a USB (well, all the ones i was allowed to copy). Just my Borderlands guy is 2 levels lower. But if Sony deletes them, then i can still use my USB copies, right? And all my stuff on the Playstation Store will still be under my downloaded stuff.

I'm 99% sure i no longer have any warranty, so i could try to fix it myself. I keep on seeing people talking about this super easy tactic, if you could point me in the (definetly) right direction, i'll take a look!

lol Why thank you. You always think "it will never happen to me!", but when it does, it sucks.
