Default KDL46V3000 Future proof enough?

I am thinking of upgrading my no-name 37" 720p LCD to the Sony KDL46V3000. My question is with its 1080/24p support, is it future proof enough to be a decent tv for at least a few years? The 1440 resolution standards are far enough away that they shouldn't be replacing 1080p tvs anytime soon...correct?

I have this tv and I love it! Be warned though, it merely accepts a 24fps signal, it doesn't display it properly. It then applies pull-down processing to the signal so that it can display with its 60hz refresh rate. Honestly though, the motion blur is really only a factor when I watch SD content. But if you want a solid tv that is going to be pretty well future-proofed, then you sould probably get an XBR4 or XBR5.

I would love to get an XBR model, but I am going to have a hard enough time paying for this one....technology waits for no wallet I guess-I just hope I can catch up. I never wanted to be in the lead, just not years behind.

So the 1080/24 will pretty much do nothing for me then?

This is an excellent hdtv. You won't be at all disappointed.
After purchasing it go to avsforums.com and in the forums search box enter "Sony KDL46V3000 calibration." You will find many recommendations for the settings. Try many of them to find the one you like best.

I have last years model, the kdl-46v2500, and so far I've had no problems. I have seen the v3000 model in the stores and I don't see much of an improvement (don't take that as a bad thing) over the v2500. When I first got my tv, I was a little dissapointed in some of the quality, but a lot of PQ problems actually come from the source itself. I've noticed the NFL games this year over last year are an outragous improvement. Back to your orignal question, yes, this TV will last you. I hope I was helpful.

On this tv, no, it won't help. The 1080/24 signal will just be converted back to 1080/60 before the tv will display it. This creates more conversions and pull-downs that can degrade the signal so I just leave the BD player output at 1080p/60. I have no regrets about buying this tv instead of the XBR4 though. If this is all your wallet can handle, then don't worry, this will be plenty good enough!!! I love it!!

Thanks for all of your help guys.

Is there any sub $2500 46" LCD with 120hz that you know of?

That (120 hz) is what I would need for the 1080/24 to look proper right?

I don't know of any, which is why I ended up with this tv!! The Sony still has a 10 bit panel for excellent color reproduction and a high contrast ratio. You won't be disappointed!!!!

I have the same one and also got the calibration from bestbuy, I love the TV but wish I would have waited, the sun-wed before thanksgiving they sold the tv with a free 80gb ps3
I'm glad I got the calibration, the display doesn't heat up very much at all and the HD PQ looks good imo. The only thing I wish it could do is 1080p over component but i guess thats what separates it from the xbr line. With the calibration from bestbuy they connect to the set via hdmi and put a sensor on the middle of the set and then display various colors and adjust things, certainly far better than anything you can do with mucking about in hidden settings or using instructions found online.

I have seen the 46" Sony XBR for $2550...pretty close.

AND if you want to play the game.

onecall.com will price match. Get them to price match lcdtvs.com (priced at $2550)...and they might give you the holiday bonus with it, which is another $100...

Heck you can only try.

Depending on how far back youa re sitting, I would just recommend that you get the Pioneer PDP-5080HD. You should definitely do some reading up on viewing distance and resolution. If you sit >10' back from a 50" screen then you won't be able to tell a difference from 768p vs. 1080p. Check out this chart:

Anyways, the Pioneer PDP-5080HD is a 1366x768p plasma that displays 1920x1080p/24 content back at 1366x768p/72 by scaling and performing an even 3:3 cadence. You should be able to find this set for $2500 and it is regarded as being one of the highest rated displays available right now. The Pio 5080 is also one of the only sets that can inverse telecine 1080i/60 film based (24hz original) content back to 1080p/24 and then scale to 768p/24. Head over to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb and do some reading to find out exactly what is right for you.

Having a display that can refresh at 60hz and 72hz is just as good as having a display that can refresh at 120hz, and the former is even better if it can properly de-interlace 1080i/60 film and video content correctly.

Take a look at the Pioneer PDP-5080HD plasma. It refreshes at both 60hz and 72hz which is just as good as having a display that can refresh at 120hz. The Pioneer 50" plasma is bigger, but it is only 1366x768p resolution. The 768p resolution should make no difference though if you sit further than 10' back from the display. Read some reviews on Cnet, ask for some advice over on avsforum.com and check out this chart below:

I know these graphs are generated using real data, but I swear that I can see the difference between 1080i and 1080p. 720 and 1080 is way different. This graph is a straight line, meaning it is either interpolated or an average. Some people can't hear the difference in the new HD audio formats either, but I know I can. I guess what it all comes down to is that you need to compare tvs at the store. Personally, I would not get anything lower than 1080p.

I have the 52" model of this TV and it is fantastic. Very rarely do I see any motion blur with it. And if I do, it's for a fraction of a second. Also, I review Blu-ray for another website, so my eyes have become trained to seek flaws. Any regular consumer would probably not even notice... my friends haven't yet! LOL

So which TV would you rather get the Pioneer PDP-5080HD plasma...or the Sony 46 XBR4 LCD? I seem to be hung up on resolution right now which is why I've been planning on getting the Sony, but the reviews are higher for the Pioneer and I'll only be 6 to 8 feet away from the set. I need some serious help...I'm so confused it hurts...if the Pioneer was 1080p I'd it no problem, but I can't afford the 1080p version of this set just yet.

Buy the Sony. A friend of mine just bought two sets, the 40" W3000 for the bedroom and the 52" XBR4 for his main set. The last time he bought a TV was twenty years ago!

They are both unbelievable.

That's a tough call. If you are sitting any further I'd say the Pioneer, but with 6-8' you will need 1080p for that screen size. I sit 6 feet away and I couldn't even buy a 52" XBR4 because I could see the pixels (that's why I ended up getting the 46" XBR4).

To the original poster -- you can find a 46" XBR4 for not much more than $2500 if you are patient enough to look around for a deal.

So would you say it would be worth it to wait for the KURO PDP-5010FD...it's about $800 more than the 46XBR4 right now on Amazon. I might have the money for it shortly after Christmas and since it's a 1080p I should see the benefits of both worlds. I don't know if I've seen the Pioneer setup anywhere, but from what I hear the PQ is the best on any HDTV except for the Elite series...would anyone agree with that. Thanks for your help again Gandalf...I can't seem to make up my mind yet...I'm starting to stress on the decision.

I replied to you in the other thread...I thought the question sounded familiar.

Pioneer plasmas are hard to beat. There's a Best Buy/Magnolia that has one of the 60" Pioneers on display with a Blu-ray player and it looks absolutely stunning. But if you sit very close to the screen or have a bright room, LCDs may be easier on your eyes. (This is the reason why I chose an LCD -- the kitchen lights will reflect off a plasma's glass too much.)

enjoy

I have a KDL-52W3000 that I just picked up this weekend. I am noticing some horizontal black lines during fast movement when watching some broadcast HD channels, in particular TNTHD. I also notice motion blur. Is there something wrong on my TV for me to be seeing horizontal black lines? Note: My PS3 blu-ray player has excellent quality and I can't complain.
