Oooohhhh...you sound bitter!

Off-Topic, but groovin on this riff... Ricky Gervais on 'Fresh Air':

Quote:
This is one of my favorite moments from the series. He's an extra in a movie about a nun who hides Jews from Nazis during World War II. And your character Andy is dressed as a Nazi. And the movie's star, Kate Winslet, is in costume as a nun. And between scenes they have this little chat.

(Soundbite of HBO series "Extras")

Mr. GERVAIS: (as Andy Millman) I'd just like to say I think, you know, you doing this is so commendable. You know, using your profile to keep the message alive about the Holocaust.

Ms. KATE WINSLET (Actress): (as herself) My God, I'm not doing it for that. I mean I don't think we really need another film about the Holocaust, do we? It's like, how many have there been? You know, we get it - it was grim, move on. No, I'm doing it because I've noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust -guaranteed an Oscar. I've been nominated four times - never won. The whole world is going, why hasnt Winslet won one?

Mr. GERVAIS: (as Andy Millman) Def - yeah.

Ms. WINSLET (Actress): (as herself) That's it. That's why I'm doing it. Schindler's bloody list, "Pianist," Oscars coming out of their ass.

(Soundbite of laughter)

BIANCULLI: You know, its absolutely hilarious, and what makes it even funnier, of course, is that, you know, years later...

Mr. GERVAIS: Life imitated art.

Frankly, some of you make him out to be Michael Bay when that's F A R from the truth.

Watch a film like DUEL or MUNICH and try to tell me those suck.
Agreed Shell! I'm far from being a Spielberg fanboy, but I think he put out a handful of very decent and important films that deserve some respect.

I happen to be a big WWII follower, so I have a liking/respect for Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. I didn't particularly like Schindler's List, so I'm not a WWII fanboy for just ANY film.

I have NEVER seen The Thin Red Line, so I'm absolutely thrilled about the chance to see it in the best possible way! How bad could it be, after producing a film like Days of Heaven.

I've never seen Munich...I might just have to check it out.

Ha, they took some of my posts down, which is cool (and sorry), but you all keep quoting them, and watch later today or tomorrow some Spielberg fanboy will see what you quoted and start this over again. But I will try to not respond.

NETFLIX! It was an absolute Renaissance for me (thanks to my Jungian wife for pushing me! ).

Every time I get a suggestion from one of you fine folks here, I do a search on the NetFlix site and find out whether it's streamable and/or if I have to add it to my DVD/BD queue. That's how I was able to discover a somewhat obscure film like The Passenger (thanks CG! ).

For the $11.99 a month that it's costing me, with the ability to have (1) rental at a time, I can "rent" (2) films each week and stream to my hearts content. Saved a load so far on Criterion purchases.

In addition, if your local NetFlix shipping center does NOT carry the title that you've requested, they will send the next available selection from your queue and ship the original request from out of state...as a bonus/free rental. This was the case with me with the Criterion DVD of The Burmese Harp. I live in upstate NY and they had to ship me a copy from Florida.

Damn...I wish I had HBO...Ricky Gervais is the best! My favorite character of his lately, is Louie C.K.'s doctor on the FX show "Louie"...which itself is brillant! I can't believe that he's allowed to do the great/bawdy material that he's done in his first season...I hope season 2 is just as good!

Thanks for the feedback CG! I moved it to the #3 spot in my DVD queue...got a couple of BFI titles in the top 2 spots (Saturday Night and Sunday Morning plus The Innocents)...so I've got Come and See coming on a Saturday, so I've got the weekend to watch it.

Glad you got your Breathless!

I don't believe in paying for rentals. Beta, keep in mind I'm spoiled with Criterions, free advance showings, the CleveNet library system, Cedar Lee and the C'theque. I can get my fix from those outlets.

Default Zip.ca - what's going o with Criterion Blu-rays?

I live in Toronto, and at the beginning of the year I signed up with Zip.ca. Generally speaking, they're pretty good. They have a lot of Criterion material, and most of the Blu-rays. I have the Blu of Paris, Texas in the mail apparently, which I'll watch next Monday (I'm busy attending TIFF screenings through until Sunday night).

But I'm rather anxious about the fact that they have yet to offer Blu-ray for September's releases. (I watched Breathless earlier this year, so don't need to immediately rewatch; I'm not too concerned that Criterion's October and November releases aren't yet listed.) I have never seen Charade or The Thin Red Line or Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, so would really like to watch these through Zip, but thus far they still only list the original DVD versions.

On the one hand, they did upgrade to Blu for earlier releases like The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, Black Orpheus, and Walkabout, but they haven't done so with M. So I wonder what will happen. I've called them before about this, but their help line doesn't seem to know whether they'll get a particular movie that's not already listed.

BTW CG...I watched The Passenger last night...

An interesting film...a bit slow and you have to push yourself a bit to follow the plot...but I did re-watch a few sections of it with the Nicholson commentary.

Interesting about that scene at the end of the film at the Hotel. It was done in one shot and went from inside the room, looking out of the "bars" of the window and ended up by looking back inside the hotel from the outside. Nicholson said that Antonioni achieved this by constructing the hotel himself and having the ability of pulling the entire wall of the hotel off, allowing the camera to shot inside/outside/inside in one shot. What a brilliant idea!

Whether you liked the plot or not...like The Red Desert...his use of framing, lighting, color, etc. made it worth watching the film alone.

I think this would make a FINE choice for a CC BD, just based on the cinematography.

I own the dvd but still haven't watched it again with the commentary. Need to get around to that.

Well, unlike you, I'm sure the majority of the country isn't fortunate enough to live in an area where a) their library stocks Criterion/independent/foreign titles and b) independent movie theaters are abound.

Like you said, you're "spoiled" by your location. Not all of us are, so paying for rentals isn't all that ridiculous.
