So all he has to do is look like Borat, act like Bruno, but speak with a British accent. I'm sure he can handle that.

I think that is going to be an important part of the film.
Agreed - That's pretty much what I was saying or thinking. You can't Leave his being Gay OUT of the movie completely but you Can show it in a way that conveys his fun/cheeky side, if that makes sense. ()

Queen was one of only a handful of bands that got all 4 components to gel, just right, to make something really special.

Queen was so special, I am tempted to say that maybe this film shouldnt be made. Brian and Roger being involved offers a little security I guess. For me, its not a Cohen issue. Its a "Should it be done at all?" issue. I just dont think anyone will be able to nail it, and if its not perfect, its going to suck. Does that make sense? I just dont know.....I'll think about it for a while.
First of all, yes, I'm obviously NOT in my 20's but am proud to be 45 & had the chance to see them in their early Great years (my 1st/Only show was the 9/25/80 Concert in Boston). Had the chance to see them on the "HOT SPACE" tour but really didn't like that album at all, so skipped the show (I know, somebody shoot me. ) You are VERY Lucky (& Not so Young yourself! ) to have seen them in the 70's with Freddie's longer hair & love of all things Loetard. I pretty much agree with everything you said but am "almost" looking forward to this film. You prob. know as much as I, that if MAY/TAYLOR & to possibly a smaller extent, DEACON, are all involved in the film (script/story/music), that they won't ALLOW it be anything other than Positive & to shine a very bright
[Show spoiler](Pink? )
light upon their Friend, partner in crime, & Vocalist, in the story of how QUEEN came to be with Freddie Mercury.

Ever since I read of Sacha Baron Cohen's interest in this role I hoped he would be given the green light by the surviving members of "Queen." I have no doubt he will nail the part.

Who's Scott Pilgram? Oh you must have meant Scott PILGRIM.

Either way, seems you're in the minority on this one DP' -- Most seem to feel he does have similar enough features to play Freddie & hopefully, he will play (as the character would suggest) this role Seriously. His silliness aside, if he can pull this off (even Robin Williams started off as MORK, remember? ), and Yes, that is a Huge "IF" - who knows what we might see from him down the road. But yes, one step at a time.

It was well-known he liked chicks and dudes, but regardless, he has one of the best voices of all-time. Cohen better not be singing. There is NO WAY he has the range that Mercury had.

I hope the film will also focus on Freedie as pianist. He was also incredible piano player IMO. He could play the instrument as either a lead or rhythm, Bohemiam Rhapsody was a great example of both! Other stellar tracks that feature his paino skills were: Seven Seas of Rhye, March of the Black Queen, Somebody To Love, The Millonaire Waltz, Love Of My Life, and the list goes on... Also, he played acoustic guitar as well, he played it on Crazy Little Thing Called Love. He was not just a great singer but a stallar musician as well

His guitar "skills" could be questioned. And strongly.

He had self-admitted "minimal" skills on the guitar. I saw them at the Boston Garden, on 9/26/80
[Show spoiler](the day After JOHN BONHAM of Led Zeppelin died)
, & when they played "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", he said into the mic: "I only know 4 F---in' chords..." -- So he could play passably, which was fine if he only did it once or twice a show back then.

LOL. When I saw them in Los Angeles he started with the wrong cord and Brian laughed and stopped him and Freddie said "Fack off darling, I was testing you". The audience roared.

Just stumbled onto this thread. Freddie has got to be one of my favorite musicians who takes me back to my grammer school days, when I first heard of him. I remember how fascinating he was to me not just for his awesome music but also for his flamboyance and all the rumors that floated around about his lifestyle. That factor is what made him so interesting and I would definitely want to see it portrayed in the movie. I say show us the artist, the genius, but also show us the human. I want to see Sacha nail this part and give us the most "real" portrail possible - the good, the bad and the ugly.

Queen was a great band..., PERIOD! Gonna pop in "Rocks Montreal and Live Aid" this afternoon! Wish they would release "Live and Wembley" and "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" on blu, as well as a collection of their classic rock videos!

That's an interesting choice. Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie would be a very interesting role, since Sacha looks a lot like Freddie. Besides, Queen is a kick ass band and is one of my all time favorite bands as well!
