IN Amazon , for example, you will find lots of blu ray titles selling cheaper than the DVD version of the same movie. Unfortunately in India we are pricing regular DVDs at 299 and Blu Rays 799. At this differential, only an acute videophile would be looking to make the switch.

The other option is of course what Disney seems to be doing and the way I think market will finally move. They are manufacturing and possibly authoring onshore to produce for Indian markets a far inferior, bur competitively priced, product than what is available globally . ( Case in point Alice in wonderland).

Bottom line , blu ray will eventually be successful in India but not in the form we would like it to be. It will be a much cheaper version with far inferior quality transfers
well when hollywood has blu rays as mainstream and are much cheaper than in india........they still gave maintained thier quality standards so why dont the indians will??? the blu rays are like a new start and maybe the quality will not go down with prices.....at least we should be postive and hope so........!!

History of home video in India suggests that the quality always goes for a dive once a format becomes cheaper and thus goes mainstream. Ofcourse it mostly has to do with the fact that the average Indian consumer neither understands or cares about quality. Which ofcurse is in turn linked tot he lack of exposure.

Ahh.. the optimism of youth... I like it. But unfortunately life has taught me otherwise. I can almost assure you that if and when blu-ray becomes mainstream in India, you will see the re-emergence of forced advertisements, logo watermarks and poorer quality. All these things by default go hand in hand with the popularity of any audio/video format in India. The same happened to Indian audio cassettes and later with audio cds too by the way. The only formats that escaped this fate are Vinyl and Laser Discs. The reason for their escaping was simply because these formats never became mainstream.

Personally I don't understand why are we so eager to see blu-ray be more mainstream. I am more than happy with the prices as they are, keeping a clear divide between the DVD and BD market. This way those who simply care about price can stick to DVDs and the rest who do care about quality and are willing to pay more for it, should move up to blu-ray.

PS: I do have issues with anything priced over Rs. 799/- and prices of Eros and a few T-Series titles are just outrageous.
