Universal almost definitely got "considerations" from Toshiba to be Hd Dvd exclusive. My guess is that their getting a cut of the lucrative royalties from Toshiba, hence their motivation to keep the format afloat. It's why I don't believe Universal would go neutral until it is all but obvious that HD DVD is dead. Without Universal dumping a ton of catalog titles in 2007(which most looked very poor btw) Hd Dvd would have been even further behind in release numbers than it is now.

It seems the numbers for November 25th are known: 73 / 27 give or take a fraction. So why not add them now

Toshiba just can't win, they pay people off (or M$ does), or give stuff away, but they still can't make inroads, gotta love it.

One thing that I will say about Universal is that if they go Blu Exclusive or at least neutral, they better get there act together. They have many piss poor PQ/AQ releases!

I would attribute that mainly to the low capacity and low throughput on HD-DVD Hopefully if they see the light and come on over, they'll push the BD-50s like Fox and Disney do (and Warner doesn't).

CES will be interesting! Mark my words! I'm just simply of the opinion that if Warner is truly watching the 4th quarter closely as they said they were and is of a consumer-oriented mind, I think they'll be making a Blu-ray exclusive decision come CES 2008...barring any bribes from Microshaft, of course. But even then, I simply think Warner has to have considered the ramifications of deciding to go HD DVD exclusive--a niche market in a perpetual stalemate and would potentially cause Warner to lose billions of dollars in lost sales due to singe-handily destroying the high-def market.

From a studio perspective, I don't think that is what is in their best interests overall, and why they simply haven't gone HD DVD exclusive, or ever will.

Innerloop -- Yeah, but then they would need to reencode their transfers to a higher bandwidth, and with Warner, the overall HDM front-runner, not even bothering to do that, how could Uni justify the expense?

We might have to do with low bitrate crap for the first year or so, once the good people of Universal make the decision.

And that will be one of the more bitter casualties of this particular war.

The plan is absolutely to reissue their current HD compressions on Blu. You'll have to wait for reissues for Blu-specific

We could at least get PCM tracks out of it and extras as well on a single disc. Double dips are inevitable anyway.

I know I would consider a BD50 of King Kong if it included a PCM track and all the extras from the DVD releases, even though extras themselves don't mean that much to me (at least in the context of the format war). Initially I have no doubt we would get the same encodes with their interlacing flags released (remember all HDDVDs have these flags to output the 1080i60 as mandated by the HDDVD spec).

Great numbers, though. This is just the beginning. The next month should see the complete butt whooping of HD-DUD.

That's perplexing to say the least. A mistake?

I would wait to see what Home Media Magazine publishes in the next issue to be sure.

Can anyone explain how Open Season ended up second best selling Blu-ray this week, ahead of Spider-Man 3 and Ratatouille?

Which speaks volumes for Best Buy's share of the HDM market, doesn't it?

Not to mention how many PS3s were sold?

HMM should have the ratios out tomorrow, so assuming Die Hard sold ~100K, it should be possible to estimate Best Buys 40G PS3 sales for the week. (If the ~100K was based on Neilsen data)

Yes, that's very encouraging. Best Buy must have moved a huge number of PS3s.

My guess is everything in that list is going to be in single to teens digits percentage wise on Blu-ray side, and sold numbers on HD DVD sides are going to be 2,000 to 15,000 each. Pitiful results for HDM in general.

well vgcharts (i know, not perfect at all) is reporting PS3 sold 174k last week, so i'd expect bby to maybe to have sold 15-20% of those, so the open season numbers should be 35kish. die hard is around 100k, so blu is at 135k right there I figure everything else on that list did between 8k-15k, so for the week blu-ray did around 200k. Which means HD DVD did about 70k. 70:200 is looking pretty bad for hd dvd.
