VC1 and MPEG-2

noob, () there's MPEG-2, VC-1, and AVC/H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 (those last 3 are different names for the same thing)

Basically the main difference is that VC-1 and AVC are newer advanced video codecs so they are more efficient (they can shrink the files smaller while retaining quality) and they have new features and tools to make the compression look better which they are learning to use now. MPEG-2 has the advantage that it's matured, looks fine at higher bitrates and is quicker to do (A time is money advantage when making titles)

I wonder if they will ever have an official Superbit Blu-ray MPEG2 format. Like Columbia Tristar's (division of Sony) DVD has.

It seems unlikely as the factor of diminishing returns comes into play, with DVD it was not a problem as the bitrate was so low, but with BD the bitrate is so hight hat there would be no point in pumping it any higher on many BD50 releases.

I severly doubt Superbit is going away anytime soon.

Innocence and Brave Story BDs from Japan are MPEG-2 superbits in a sense.
