anybody else impressed with ratatouille and spiderman 3 sales. it looks like these are going to be very strong throughout the xmas season selling 25-35k a week. blu-ray easily did over 200k this week, its really going to be intresting to see what they do the week of 12/4. i predicted 250k eariler, but after seeing these numbers i think its going to be more like 300k. if hd dvd only manages 75k that week (very likely) we WILL see 80:20.

Yep, I've made this point many times when people throw out these huge hopes. You get to a point where marginal % gains just aren't very likely unless HD-DVD were to totally collapse. The same point applies to the YTD and SI numbers... they get harder to move both as you get higher and as you add more time because the embedded volume is so large.

My professional opinion as a buyer for a Blockbuster franchise on this Harry Potter selling more on HD than BR is complete non-sense.

I've been buying DVD sell thru for the past 8 years and I can tell you in my experience big titles will sell, it doesn't matter if there was big releases the prior week. There are titles that do suffer but those are titles like Hot Rod, I Know Who Killed Me, Arctic Tale, Star Dust, Underdog, ect... Those titles all suffer IMMENSLY when going against huge blockbuster titles. A blockbuster title going against another blockbuster title doesn't really mean anything.

In the end, if HD does infact outsell BR with the new Harry Potter movie it will be due the firesale of all the new HD players and not this mythical "people don't have enough money to buy the big titles". People ALWAYS have enough money to buy the big titles, it's the little ones that suffer.

Warner does not have to judge things using the Nielsen's for their own movies like HP; They will just look at total revenues for Blu v HD-DVD. Box set or invdividual won't really matter to them. They will look at Nielsen and units for other studios though.

Yes, but for their own releases they don't care about units, they will define sales as revenue. That is how companies define revenue. Nielsen and such use units as a proxy because that's what they get. WB doesn't have to worry about box set or not in terms of the format war, just rev $$ by format.

While it's good to see "Hairspray" so popular on the charts (since it helps dispel the PS3/gamer demographic argument that keeps popping up... unless gamers really go for John Travolta in drag), since it was only released on Blu-ray, it's not anything special.

"Ocean's 13" however is slightly different thanks to the fact that it was dual-format, and while both versions were on the Top 10 last week, only the Blu-ray copy made it to the Top 10 this week (even though it was in the Top 5 for HD DVD again this week!).

Wow, Shrek fell below the Rat. Talk about not having legs.

Looks like HD DVD has to pray that Transformers, 300, and Shrek have enough clout to let them coast to January without getting wholoped too badly.

so pretty much..Open Season sold 1 copy for every 2 copies of LFoDH and that puts Open Season around 40-45k sold for that week...

not too shabby for a long lasting catalog title

The HDM market is too small for tactical decisions.

An example of a tactical decision that is made: Whether to release a widescreen AND full screen disc. The decision is entirely about sales of the title.

Gary
The scope of your strategic decision is too small, ignores the direct relationship between tactical and strategic and fails to contemplate WB's direct impact on the format vis-a-vis the tactical data. If one format were to outsell the other 3:1 thru the holiday season then WB could foreseeably believe that they directly can end the war thereby dramatically cutting production & marketing costs to maximize profit. This strategic decision stems directly from the tactical elements of today's HDM market.

To pretend that the tactical is too immaterial to matter in a strategic context is flawed.

The lack of a huge drop-off between the rankings intrigues me. It seems like the formats are stabilizing and sales are becoming more regular across the board.

If that's the case then HD DVD is done as they're still not able to get blue below 2:1. In boxing 2 wins and a tie doesn't equal a tie. Europe and Japan are blue... so too will the US.

That's lazy, sad and disappointing. Published stats have to round or else you ALWAYS benefit the losing side.

BTW I'm angry not as a blu-ray guy but as a Director of Financial Analysis... hate misleading stats.
