It will throw in the towel when it produces a Blu-Ray player ...

Also reckon Toshiba will draw it out as long as possible. Then probably will quietly stop manufacturing players for HD DVD, but allow the rest of their inventory to be sold to unsuspecting consumers at knock down prices.

Once all gone announce they are going blu. Plausible..... ? Only time will tell.

According to what source? Any company spends money on the products it wants to promote. And do you think Sony is spending money on BD the same way Toshiba is? If so, based on what source of information?

And what about Philips? And Panasonic? And Pioneer? And every other company promoting BD? Why are you singling Sony out?

In another thread on this subject I posted:

...this is the kind of settlement I'd like to see: Toshiba starts making dual-format players and stops production of HD-DVD-only players. There's a special discount for upgraders (bring in your old unit) of the A1, A2 etc to the new Toshiba dual player.

Here's the kicker, the special discount is partly funded by a waiving of the usual hardware licencing fees for Blu-ray. The waiver would apply by rebate only to the upgrades which have removed dedicated HD-DVD players from circulation. Blu-ray hardware manufacturers would have to agree on this as a special and very temporary concession to Toshiba which would help smooth out the ending of the format war. The HD-DVD-heads could then play their existing disc libraries and (if the upgrade price is right) couldn't really whine too much about the demise of their format.

The war could in effect be concluded on the hardware side of things if nobody is making HD-DVD-only players anymore and there's a smooth transition to Blu for the sticklers.

Exactly! Toshiba is HD DVD. BD is bigger than just Sony.

Y'er speakin' my language there. I seriously don't get this whole singling out of Sony thing. Blu-ray was co-developed, and while Sony is a big player, the biggest one is actually Panasonic.

On other boards, I've seen ppl so dumb they think blu-ray is a proprietary, all-Sony creation. Where's some patent records when you need them?

The rumors are more rampant than ever of HD DUDs dismissal. This week is their biggest chance to snag at least one week of the whole year for their software sales.

When will Toshiba admit defeat?

When hell freezes over and pigs fly.

It's not going to happen anytime soon; They're out for blood. Expect kamikaze attacks soon.

I get the feeling that Toshiba is going to adopt the same strategy that Japan did in WW2 which is to fight until every last soldier is dead and never surrender (to the detriment of the world around them). Anything short of 2 atomic bombs or the use of logic will not convince HD-DVD to go away. Reason has completely gone out the window for the HD-DVD group and its followers. I've been following this war since HD-DVD launched and they've gone through quite a roller coaster ride. It wasn't so long ago that HD-DVD was winning convincingly and Blu-Ray stumbled out of the gate with a disastrous introduction. Now the tables have completely turned and all the smack that they talked a year and a half ago has come back to bite them. I respect their passion and dedication but at the same time I think they should throw in the towel before they end up like Apollo Creed in Rocky IV.

kami kaze....it's part of their culture no matter what they do if their reputation is at stake and they know seing ice berg ahead, they'd rather do it (to regain the last ounce of humanity) than to live life with shame...

Never, now, they'll prolly phase the HD-DVD players out with a wimper, but it won't be a fanfare by far.

Just like Sony with Beta and UMD...

I felt sorry for UMD.

At least you can watch movies on a plane trip or on a bus. Just plug your ear phone and you are good to go. Think Ipod, except with a movie, on a small, but bad ass hi-def looking screen.

It's much better than a portable DVD player, and save more space too.

Poor UMD.

Universal and Paramount will never be willing to stoop to the same levels of desparation when it comes to their software sales as Toshiba is willing to go in their Hardware sales. They have their occassional BOGO, but it seems they're just going along for the ride knowing that when it's over they will be able to sell twice as much on the other side. Is it me or does the BDA seem to do strategy better. Like the BDA likes to play RISK, but Toshiiba is playing BATTLESHIP.

They already had their chance with Transformers, but fell short. Bourne was a good movie, but it's not going to win them a week.

HD-DVD came out with their unit and all their specs finalized. Then they critisized BD for not (and still not) having a full profile. But what is ending up happening, is that we see ALL HD-DVD can do now, nothing more. While Bluray players are just starting to live up to their potential and have much more to go. JAVA can do so much more than HDi ever could, and we will have the last laugh.

UMD came at a bad time, same time as the portable DVD players you mentioned, and the discs had a similar price point.

"Why buy twice"... Which is going to be the interesting fun part of the 'war' when it shifts to HDM v DVD, since I really doubt we'll see HDM taking the same sort of presence in the portable market for a while...

I could hope and reflect on UMD, but well, I enjoy the movies, but since I lost my discount, I don't buy any either. Instead I have my portable dvd player/lap warmer.

UMD never really appealed to me. With portable DVD players at least you didn't have to go buy more movies...you already had your collection. Not to mention I seemed to have a problem with the PSP small screen size...I would feel strange watching too much motion on the screen. Kind of sad too becuase I really liked the games...a lot more of an adult portable than the DS.
