LG GGC-H20L - Great drive! - Blu-ray Forum

Finally got my hands on one of these. I was originally eye ballin' the pioneer for 260$. After a little homework, I changed my mind.

Most people that grab the pioneer have to buy a new copy of PowerDVD ultra, the H20L comes with it. and if for whatever reason I ever need the DUD aspect of the drive, its there.

The OEM of powerDVD ultra wanted to get the update when i pop'd in FF2, which then upgraded the PowerDVD to version to 7.3.3319.

Just an update on this drive and the included PowerDVD...

I finally had to grab a real retail copy of PowerDVD. Up until yesterday everything worked perfectly with the oem, including movies that give play trouble such as FF-Silver Surfer. Although I brought home a copy of the Spidey Trilogy and found that cyberlink doesn't seem to be rushing out the updates for the oem as quickly as they are for the retail. So yea, I threw down the money for a real copy.

As far as the drive itself goes, I'm still completely satisfied.

How are you getting your sound? Are you able to get lossless audio via HDMI or are you just using the pc audio input to get DD 5.1?

I was at Frys picking up a some external DVD-RW drives to take to India for our India office of my next trip when I noticed this drive.

They had this drive and a Pioneer drive, both for ~$250. I bought both. I will probably return one of them.

I feel conflicted on this drive.

If I keep this drive, I will want to buy HD-DVD discs. This would be counter productive.

Thought, Netflix + HD-DVD rentals + LG GGC-H20L + Lite-On LH-2B1S + 25GB BD-R + AnyDVDHD = well you do the math......

Initially when I got the drive I was still using optical. I ran out and got the cables to output the analogs from the soundcard to the multi-channel input on the receiver. So I think LPCM is working fine, not sure on the lossless codecs though. PowerDVD is probably filtering the TrueHD and such , but I doubt its capable of DTS-HD yet.

I was just going to give it some time for hardware to catch up with the new codecs and connections and then planned on upgrading. For the time being though, I am able to view everything and hear everything.

I know what ya mean

I got 1 to test the drive out and make sure the DUD side of the drive wasn't a DUD. Although I think I am capable of not buying any more.

i want this drive, but is it possible using drive enclosure? What will I need? I am using laptop, and not experienced in desktop things.

I've had a GCC-H20L and GGW-H20L for a few months. The GGW-H20L is the fastest Blu-ray writer I've tested. Here's a few screenshots to drool over.

I have the LG GCC-H20L and am frustrated with lack of support for the OEM version of Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 7 from both Cyberlink AND LG. There is now a BD-Live upgrade for PowerDVD Ultra 7, but only for retail and online versions. The OEM version of the software doesn't have an upgrade. Cyberlink referred me to LG; LG just kind of shrugged. Has anyone figured out a way to upgrade their bundled software that came with this drive so it is BD-Live capable?

You aren't missing much with BD-live, but you ARE missing 5.1 sound, you should really upgrade...

BD-Live so far has been a letdown, its kind of boring... to me its about as exciting as the trailers for "coming soon to dvd"
