Hell of a coincidence, since anything Plaz might have to say is most likely worthless.

I can't make head nor tail of this little gem?

BDA Marketing Tactics Exposed
Commentary - December 1, 2007 7:02 P.M.

The BDA recently took out a full page ad claiming that they outsold HD DVD 7 to 3 during Thanksgiving week. While they did have a major release that week ("Die Hard 4") which has certainly done well for them, it is interesting to note that the #2 movie for that week was "Open Season", an 11-month old movie that hasn't sold very well at all. How would an 11-month old title make it into the top 10, all the way to #2? Oh yeah, it was given away free! Best Buy gave away "Open Season" on Blu-ray to anyone that bought a PS3. That's right, whether you bought a PS3 for gaming only or even to hook up to a standard definition TV, you received "Open Season", clearly advertised as a "Free" bonus.

The BDA has given away free movies 3 times now. Once when Transformers was released on HD DVD, again when "Shrek" was released on HD DVD and this latest example with "Open Season." We'll probably see it again when "the Bourne Identity" is released on HD DVD.

Here's how the Blu-ray marketing scam work...........blah, blah, blah
Quote:
The BDA is feeling the heat from HD DVD, there is no doubt. I'd love to see what would happen if they stopped trying to give away so many Blu-ray titles for free and count them as sold. Heaven forbid the truth be known, lol.
Now just how many firesales have HD-DVD had, didn't they even have a BOGO last week!

Hd dvd was the first to go beyond the 5 free by mail, back in late August or early October they offered 7 free movies, including the mail-in and 2 in store. Hd dvd is the only one to offer 10 free that I'm aware of.
I don't remember any give away during Shrek week, but it does coincide with the holiday shopping season so it might not be related.
Blu-ray wins every week of the year yet they still try to spin. Some people can never admit to making a mistake.

My advice, stay away from HDD.

I had a little fun this weekend, but that's it for me, there's only so much ill informed spin and FUD you can take before you need a break, lol.

Actually, it's not an AVS thread, and probably would not be allowed under the new AVS HD forum rules.

Expect silly arguments in other forums... and even here from time to time. You can't take this stuff seriously.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. People get excited when 61 becomes 62, but that doesn't really mean anything, as you said.

However, the SI number moved twice in 5 weeks, from 60 to 61 to 62, that means at least a 1 percent change (from 60.99999 to 62.00000). That's fairly impressive.

OK I think we have had enough commentary on AVS and related posts. Please no more, from ANYONE. I can see this is going to end in trouble - so please give it a break and just assume that you won the argument no matter what your point of view is, so there is no need to continue it.

I agree....and the HD-DVD bashing has to stop....

I am guilty of it myself from time to time because they are an easy target with all the BS that flies out of that camp...

but they support HD media and regardless if it's of a lesser quality, these people are the most likely candidates to go Blu or purple or whatever...

we don't want them to resent BD, we have to act like we've been in the endzone before...and we have, every single week for a year now...

ditching red for Blu makes us even more ground than someone going from DVD to Blu...

There was the WalMart 10 in store, 5 by mail with the PS3 sale or however it ended up working. But, that's one of those store sales that aren't going to be counted by Nielsen.

The funniest thing about all of this is that HD-DVD fans.

Look 2 months ago. They were all arguing that studios only care about attach rates and because many PS3 buys are not buying BD that Blu-Ray is a failure. They touted this number as the "attach rates" and claimed that HD-DVD lead this by a large margin.

Fast-forward to today. HD-DVD (Toshiba) has hosted several "free" HD-DVD player giveaways at Walmart. They have sold may may players in recent weeks yet Blu-Ray keeps selling more software. Is this important now? Nope. Now they claim that studios look at player count - stand alone for some reason.....do you really think studios care what their product is played in....nope...as long as they get the sale - and that is what HD-DVD is lacking.

What I see is several things. Many people who buy HD-DVD but it because it is on sale when they have no intention of getting HD media.

Look, I hate to say this but Walmart is aimed at people who have less means than the average person. So if you think about it, what are people going to be playing in their new HD-DVD player? $30 HD media or $10 regular DVD. How many people who bought the HD-DVD player have their new HD-DVD player hooked up to a HD TV? I would guess a low percentage.

Blu-Ray on the other-hand prices its players at a price that the market can actually bear. In turn, in most cases, if you can afford or save for a Blu-Ray player you will have the means to buy BD media.

Hey I wanted to pep talk everyone becasue with:
Paprika
The Omega Man
I Know Who Killed Me
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Being this week's exclusive releases we might see a poorer sales week.
Now if it is you'll see hd dvd people partying it up, but they can only do well when were all sitting on the bench drinking gatorade here.
So don't even sweat if the numbers aren't great,, blu will catch up and annhilate for the rest of the year.

We need to support Warner!!!!
And here's to seeing an 85% week before 2008!
I know we can do it!

Naah, I take it back,

Both are taking a break.

I'm guessing the usual 2:1 and it won't get worse for Blu from here on out.

That was a Walmart promotion.
My response was in regards to someone else's post which was bashing the BDA for supposedly giving away free movies in-store with player purchases when hd dvd released Transformers, and Shrek 3.
Actually, Nielsen does estimate Walmart sales by way of data they receive from distributors. That is how they are able to refute total movie sales per title, ala Transformers on hd dvd.
