1) Mulholland Drive
(Twin Peaks - not a film, but it slots in here)
2) Blue Velvet
3) Lost Highway (the closest in feel to Mulholland Drive IMO)
4) Wild at Heart
5) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
6) Dune (not as terrible as Lynch feels it is and I love the book)
7) The Elephant Man
8) The Straight Story
9) Inland Empire
10) Eraserhead
I agree and consider it an understatement as well.

Btw, here's my take on the ending of The Mist.

[Show spoiler]They escaped. There is hope. They ran out of gas. Guess it's time to shoot everyone in the face.....

NO!

Never give up on life. Did it look promising when they were in the supermarket and surrounded by god knows what? No. Did it look promising when most of the others went all cult crazy and tried to kill them? No. Did they do what they had to do and escape the situation, even losing a few along the way? Yes.

Then they ran out of gas... which they knew was going to happen. That's life. You get a challenge and you do you need to do to overcome it. Why not push a little further? This whole MIST incident only began a few days before... it's not like they've been living in some post apocalyptic world for years. And they live next to a god damn military base!!! They have no idea how many military personnel are still alive, as well as other locals...

So they run out of gas and are sitting there, trying to decide what to do. What if they went outside and happened to find a cabin 100 feet from the road with weapons and supplies? What if there's another vehicle nearby? They have to push on, even if it means encountering some hardships. Of course no one wants to put their family in harms way but you do what you have to do. It's now about surviving. Maybe some of them die, maybe they figure out a weekness for the creatures, maybe they get help... anything could happen. But don't put a f**kin gun to your kids head!!!!

Anyways, those are my thoughts.

I can't wait to see In Bruges again. I saw it well over a year ago at my buddy's house and it was hard to concentrate on the film as there were lots of people over.

He's definitely become a very strong actor and he doesn't stray from that in Ondine.

Trick 'r Treat

since the girlfriend is absolutely terrified of horror films, i somehow convinced her to watch Trick 'r Treat. i told her, "it's a scary movie yes, but not in the 'scary man stabs the sh*t out of everything' way. and it's definitely not like that Saw garbage. but it definitely has an eerie presence about it and is creepy in ways that horror films should be." so somehow, she said yes.

15 minutes in and she refused to move her hands from her eyes

the thing i love most about Trick 'r Treat is just how fresh and exciting it feels. too many horror movie have the same tricks, the same cliches, a predictable "everyone gets killed gruesomely" plot and some sadistic weirdo as a killer. Trick 't Treat is a real treat because it has none of that

it has actually has GOOD things going for it.

the story mixes a tale of four different stories who all have a connection to Sam, a mysterious sack wearing small child who visits those who break his wonderful Halloween traditions. but the best, quirkiest part is that the scares come even without him on the screen. whether it's the diabolical dad, the kids who go listen to a ghost story about a school bus full of kids who drown in a quarry, or the "surprise" party with the gorgeous gals (very surprising in deed! ) the film succeeds with dark humor, and darker scares.

and then once you meet Sam, the scares REALLY come in. and while the first time i "saw" Sam i kind of chuckled, but he is a menacing little beast that shouldn't be taken lightly!

i love the atmosphere, the lovable, non-stupid characters (such a nice change, haven't seen that since The Descent) and the way all four stories connect. i wish more people knew of this film and would go in with an open mind. too many people think horror films are only good if they have gallons and gallons of blood, brutal kills and some stupid old man who kills you with traps (or one of his 1,673 assistants or whatever the fudge is happening in that franchise now a days). that's not the case, and Trick 'r Treat shows you what an original, thoughtful, fun and yes, scary horror film can and should be.

highly recommended. one of my best blind buys

[Show spoiler]yes, they hadn't been there for years, but after just a few days they were getting decimated and getting mauled to death and killed off gruesomely. the one major scene to remember is when the kid tells his dad / asks his dad, "NEVER LET THE MONSTERS GET ME". look at what they had all just seen! would you risk getting out of the car and walking WHERE YOU CAN'T SEE ANYTHING?! and only having 4 bullets? how much are you going to kill?

additionally you have 2 elderly people with you and a small child. let's say you have to run. who's keeping up? and how are you getting away? there are flying bug creatures. those damn spider creatures and a whole bunch of tentacle creatures around and god knows what else. especially with that huge mother effer! i know i wouldn't be budging from that damn car.

and when they run out of gas, yes they have no real idea where they are (although yes, somewhere by the main guy's house because they see his wife) but they could be marching right into the belly of the beast! it could be getting worse. and after all you've seen, i know i wouldn't be mr. optimistic.

"encountering hardships" - uhh, yeah, tbizzle i'd say so if they leave the car and press on! would you want your kid possibly suffering a cruel, slow death from thousands of spider bugs growing inside of him?! i know i wouldn't want that for my kid or for anyone else. and there wouldn't be anything you could do about it. you don't have fire to fend them off. and again, you only have 4 bullets and their web burns through your body!

and after all you've seen in the film, would you honestly believe there would be any salvation? you've seen dozens of people get killed terribly, so what would make you think there is going to be someone shackled up somewhere safe? and why would they let YOU in. maybe they just left a bunch of crazy people so they don't trust anyone.

and remember when they decide to die, they hear something coming. and i (i think everyone who sees the film would think) think it's the creatures closing in. i never would have thought it was the military! they should have made an announcement or something!

so you're out of gas, down to 4 bullets, a small child who you promised you wouldn't let the monsters get (and how could you live with yourself if you let THAT happen? never knowing how long he suffered for), and 2 elderly people who would only slow you down if you were to run. and you hear the buzzing, rumbling of - WHAT THEY THINK - is the creatures which are everywhere and you cannot see anything. how much guilt would he live with if he abandoned the elderly people and maybe even his son? would it be more? or less? who knows, rhetorical, but i don't see it as an 'easy way out' both ways are horrible options. but i would have done exactly what they show in the movie. what would you do? get out and run? maybe.

but i sure as hell wouldn't be!

again, just my thoughts. but i do understand where you're coming from. but i am the complete opposite

The best way to watch any horror film is with your woman imo. They make the scary parts so much more dramatic.

And if they're not scared, at least you can make it more dramatic for them

Exceptions: torture porn or extremely long rape scenes that disturb her for weeks (*cough*
[Show spoiler]Last House on the Left
*cough*)

ironically enough my girlfriend WANTED to watch that movie. and i was like, "uhh, i don't think you do. there's a scene in their you really are not going to want to watch and it's gonna make you hate the movie and ruin your day, if not your entire week". and she asked me what it was, i told her, she said it would be fine "because it's only a movie" (which is ironically enough (and very spooky! ) the tag for the original - or something close to that). so i said okay. we watched it and she left the room during the scene and of course hated the movie.

i told her, and she still wanted to see it so even though i already avoid those types of films in general, now i really avoid them with her when we pick out a movie to watch. i felt so bad as she curled up on the couch and left had to leave. i felt awful i can't imagine a couple seeing the movie and NOT knowing it going in. eesh...

Yea we saw it in theaters. My gf's face literally went pale after that scene. Afterwards, only looks of disgust ensued. As if I wrote the screenplay and directed the movie myself. I felt like a terrible person.

I see nothing wrong with an ending simply for a shock affect. Afterall, its a thriller/sci-fi/horror movie. Regardless of whether you like it or not, or what you believe it means, it is certainly fitting when you consider the genre and the preceeding 90 minutes.

Thats fine that YOU wouldnt do it. But the characters in the movie chose that path. The Mist thread is proof that 50% of the audience would (like you) never do that, but 50% would. Everyone reacts differently and thats why the ending is absolutely realistic.

we gave it the same score on the first viewing
as you read i pretty much had the same thoughts as you, and after reading what you wrote here's my response (you still haven't responded to my Mist response and you're already bouncing off to another movie?! jeez! )

[Show spoiler]Great insight into the “perv” way of directing and the different cultures and how they view things differently

Still think she would have some reaction to the dad shooting at her brother though (Squid and I agree that no matter what type of abuse happened, having a gun pointed at you and being shot would be a whole other level of WTF). Although I agree she has to keep calm for her brother’s sake, they could have showed her alone and frightened by it at least imo.

Still think the weather station / scientist guys are random. But your thoughts on the zoom in with the female does make a lot of sense about the rationale and thought process of different cultures. We, Americans or “civilized” cultures are generally obsessed with seeing what we don’t see. Whereas in cultures that are bare skinned, it doesn’t effect or mean anything to them at all. But I still believe it was added simply for the sake of not having a random ass weather balloon floating around in the middle of nowhere (that would have bugged the piss out of me if that happened )

I like your idea about the mating ritual. Much like all kids until they reach a certain age or understanding, they either are afraid of everything or afraid of nothing and are open to anything because they don’t have experiences that would differentiate that from someone like the girl who probably was abused or knew the father was a bad person, so she would be more hesitant to what’s happening because she has a history with something bad. I love how this works for both types of people. For a person who experiences things they have more knowledge, but for someone who knows nothing, they have no limits or fears and are open to anything.
