Frozen

Film: 4.5/5
-this is great filmmaking!
-simple story (3 kids at a ski resort), simple setting (shot on location -- no fake sets used!! yes! that means the film crew lugged huge 40 foot flood lights up 8000 foot mountain!! through nasty freezing rain some days, through 34 inches of snow in 8 hours another day -- this was a shoot from hell but worth every penny!! Yes, I watched all 90 minutes of extras when the film ended and you should too!! this is as real as it gets!!...when you see actors in the cold shivering?? they're really shivering!! that ain't no white powder make up! they're really up that mountain in the dark and cold at 0 degrees F!!)
-(calming down) I actually knew I'd love this film 10 seconds into the film. Why? Within the first 10 seconds, a shot and sound effect is used that is (a) at the core of the film, (b) shouldn't be scary by itself, but (c) is already scary as hell even only 10 seconds in. I won't say what it was -- and don't spoil it those who have for those who haven't seen it yet -- but yes, 10 seconds in I thought "this is gonna be a great effin movie"
-A true "what would I do in this situation?" film. Your mind will race. The camera work is so intimate that you're not scared at the film, and not even scared at the characters, you're scared with the characters. In fact, you're in their hell.
-The extras are awesome. A few nuggets for those who've seen the film:
[Show spoiler]
-when Green was touring the Utah ski resort they used, and was going up the ski lift on a test run (to see what spot they'd stop it at and shoot at), he said "I didn't want to use a spot where it was EVEN PLAUSIBLE to jump..it had to a be a spot where you'd say 'NO F**KING WAY WILL I JUMP HERE'"...but here's the insane part...the lift gets to a perfect 50 foot drop, Green says to his buddy in the ski lift "this is the spot"...then suddenly...THE SKI LIFT STOPS! He had no radio. The ski lift operator had no idea they were at the right spot. It was stopped for weather reasons. Green freaked out, he said "we were there for 5 mins..it felt like 5 days" and "it was sooo freaky...it stopped RIGHT WHEN i said 'this is the spot'"
-when filming, they had to stop the ski lift car RIGHT AT THE SHOOTING SPOT where all the cameras were aligned. if they even went past it by 6 inches, the 3 actors would have to ride the car all around the mountain in the pitch black night again, which had 65 mph winds at the top!! and would go through hell just to get back to the shooting spot
-tons of other great stuff...check it out

generous with the score.

The movie was intense. Great camera work. So So story line. But what really keeps me from giving it a perfect score was the realism! I felt like in the first 30 mins the actors were pretty bad. It got great once they started

The only arguable defect of the film is the acting -- someone could argue that they were too plain/ordinary characters, as someone pointed out in a previous review. But that is definitely a strong suit in my book -- plus the 2 guy actors grew up as best friends in real life! Hence, why their acting as best friend characters comes off as so real!

again, I think the problem here is that they seemed too real. walk down to a ski resort this winter and shoot 3 random kids and they'd be just like those 3 kids. for some, that is "bad" because it doesn't look like 3 actors in a movie (i.e., not "actor-like" ). i say no

BOOOOOO! I've seen them both and this is what i have to say

Old School
-Freddy plays too much
-His make up is better
-The special effects were cooler
-The reason for him killing was better

New School
-Freddy was a true Killer
-Didnt joke around
-Way more intense
-The kill scenes were better by far

Its a slasher movie and the new school does better at the slashing and jumping parts.

There are quotes here and there about the issue, but in a more indirect fashion. At no point does the film try to force you to change your mind, it simply presents a presumably authentic look into the reasons, reality, and life of some immigrants.
Yes! I need to see Sin Nombre ASAP! And yes, great point about the non-preaching. It just said "here is a story. Make up your mind" Brilliant!

I think that this film in conjunction with The Visitor affected my outlook. Earlier this year I did some work with an organization that seeks to fight against wage theft of Florida's illegal alien workers. The point of the organization is to make sure the workers get paid, because many of the people they work for attempt to steal their wages and make them work for free by threatening to call INS and get them deported.
I think El Norte's final scenes do an exceptional job of conveying this reality; that of teetering on the tight rope. I wasn't positive what the final image of the film meant, so I watched the last scenes with the commentary on and it made those last scenes even more meaningful. If you're not sure about what those scenes meant or didn't watch the commentary, let me know and I'll tell you what the director says they mean.
Great minds think alike Like you I dove into the commentary on the end also...great insight as I was "WTF?" on that end shot too. How great was how he tied together
[Show spoiler]the water wheel as a cycle and that regardless of whether Enrique was in Guatemala or USA, he was still a slave to the working man -- showing the cycle of enslavement of his people. Awesome, just awesome! (the film, not the theme...theme is tragic but real)

re FROZEN--

I think I've made my last review of "unpleasant/ depressing" movies here--

Maybe it's a generation thing-- I don't know-- but I really feel like I don't belong here-- I just don't get the love and high fives for this type of filmmaking!!

I'll just stick to talking about films that don't fit into this catagory
