Poltergeist - 1982

For a PG rated movie about ghosts in a house, this movie really surprised me. Maybe it's been many years, but I don't recall many of the scenes in this movie. Or maybe I've just seen bits and pieces over the years. Whatever the case...I wanted to sit down and watch the movie I recorded from HDNet from start to finish.

What I got was a experted pinned movie by Steven Spielberg, superbly directed by Tobe Hooper - with nicely added gore bits sprinkled here and there. Parts of this movie I remember. I loved seeing all the old toys in the kids room

This movie nailed what it was trying to do...tell a story about one families struggle with a poltergeist. Not too gory or scary, but man was it fun to watch.

The Girl Next Door (2007) - So I watched An American Crime a few months back and I heard this film was even more gruesome and made An American Crime look like a tame version. I have to say that is true however I still prefer An American Crime over this film. Not because this one was more graphic but I just thought AAC had a better cast with better actors and it was put together better in my eyes. The biggest thing to me and difference was the mother's of each film. Catherine Keener was excellent and much better than the mother in this film. Keener seemed more genuine and she was more believable and freaked me out more. Obviously she is the better actress of the two so that makes sense. Anyway back to this film I thought it was still ok but nuthin I would care to watch again. I just may add AAC to my collection now that I have seen both and much prefer it and could even see myself watching that one again as opposed to this one.

Film Rating - 2 1/2 stars (out of 5)

PQ - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

AQ - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

5/5 across the board, still think it's 4-5 times the movie everyone seems to think Toy Story 3 is.

Tim Meadows and Don Cheadle look a lot alike but yes their voices are very different. Can't wait to see the dragon flight scenes in this again, they are insanely good!

I can tell them apart but really they do share some resebleance. Even Don himself has talked about being mistaken for Tim.

I started a manuscript recently that involves a lot of content regarding genetic and bio-engineering. For some reason, this field fascinates (and sometimes terrifies) me. Thus, this film looked very interesting, and I just had to give it a blind-buy…

“Splice.”

It’s not quite as shocking, horrorific, or action-packed as I expected. Let’s face it, it’s not “Species” or “Alien: Resurrection” or anything. “Splice” is more of a drama, and plays out like a modern-day “Frankenstein,” or perhaps a dumbed-down version of “Eraserhead.”

I think it’s pretty decent that way, as it definitely has enough substance to rise above most other creature horror flicks. I think the film does a great job of exploring the morality of artificial creation, and by the end of it I got the feeling that these characters have invited a literal demon into the world and plunged themselves into a figurative Hell. It’s also interesting seeing parallels between the human characters and the monsters.

But even though this film has so much character-driven drama and thematic material, it still entertains with its slick SFX, and a few gnarly scenes. Personally, I think it’s interesting enough to be entertaining, even without blood, guts, sex, action, etc.

I thought the acting was decent. Adrien Brody’s character is a bit of a jerk, but I think Delphine Chanéac is perfect. Writing seems okay. The film has pretty good photography and a solid production value.

4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

I see that this Blu-Ray has been described as dull. It does have many dark scenes throughout, and a lot of scenes with weird blue lighting and stuff. But as near as I could tell, it is still a sharp and clean presentation. Sound quality seemed pretty good.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5

Next greatest rental: the original “Day of the Dead.”

Pretty interesting from the start; the opening scene was itself interesting, and I rather liked the main character in this one. As the film went on, it started to have a lot of interesting scenes (I thought it was cool seeing all the different zombie experiments). Then the gross stuff came, and it was wicked!

As far as the story goes, I don’t think it was a whole lot to scream about, as it remained uneventful at times. But it does have its moments, and the characters are pretty good.

Photography is good, production value is about equal to the “Dawn of the Dead,” if not better. Gore and creature effects did not disappoint.

4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

This British Blu-Ray looked really decent at times; it is a clean and clear image. But it is soft in many parts; softer than I remember “Dawn of the Dead” being. Sound quality is okay.
