Well if you are a DIYer and have some free time you could always build one, thats what I did, I spent around $1000. I built one using a 1920X1200 laptop screen, it isalso HDCP compliant, and accepts hdmi, components, rca, s-video, and cable tv.

Here is a good example of what can be done:

this is mine and i really like it.

got it from projector people also.

have it projected onto an 80" wide screen, looks great. some brightness issues when i turn more lights on in the room* as noted in the reviews you'll see when you research it, but incredible bang for the buck.

* i have it ceiling mounted in my basement; unfortunately some of the basement lights are just a little bit offset from the projector's beam, and those really screw up the image (like, duh). however, the lights in the bar alcove more to the right hardly interfere with the image.

Wow I like to think of myself as being technical but building your own projector thats a bit nutts for me!

I have read good things about the Epson plus my cinema room (or as my gilfreind likes to call it the living room) is totally black the screen doubles as a blackout for the window.

Just out of interest how much of a jump in quality is it going to be from 720p to 1080p? My screen is about 82" and we site 5 meters away from it

when i switch between resolutions by turning 1080p off, it's a very noticeable difference on my epson projected onto an 80" screen.

It's not really hard to build, after reading alot through the forum I linked. There is a software tool that will tell you the distance to place everything inside the box, how big the screen will be, and how far back to place the projector. If you don't feel like building a box there is a guy who will do it for you, and the same guy will also build the box with everything in it except for the computer screen. One good thing about a DIY projector is the bulbs cost about 50 bucks and last around 10,000 hours.

There is a big jump from 720p to 1080p. I started off using a 1280X1024 17 inch monitor and then went to the 1080p screen and there was a huge difference. My screen is 108" wide and I have it sitting back 14 feet from the screen, it still makes my eyes go everytime I play a blu-ray.

Either way you go you will see an improvement.

I'm glad to hear comments like this. I currently have a Panny 720p (PT-AE700) and am thinking about getting a blu-ray player. I'm really happy with the picture from my old dvd player and was wondering how much better it could get. I agree that on a small display like a 40-50 LCD TV that there's going to be a big difference but when you start throwing distances of nearly 20 feet and magnifying to 110 inches, I thought the improvement of blu-ray might be limited.

Just noticed your post mate..

Having had a Blu-ray player hooked up to a Sanyo Z5.. don't listen to the crap you hear scattered around the net.. even at 720p Blu-ray is just STUNNING.. and that was at 110 inches.. honestly.. the difference is HUGE even at that resolution. Just get one mate.. you'll be staggered at the difference.
