Default High Velocity Bowling

After getting home last night I decided to download a game that I have been anticipation for awhile. I must say that I REALLY enjoy it way more than that Wii bowling game. The graphics look great in HD too. Form the reflective shine on the bowling lanes to the character models.
I pretty much played it all night last night and even had a few frames with the wife. While I’m not that great (my last score was 166) I do find the gameplay addicting.

Besides the standard bowling that normally you would think of, you also have Challenge Modes. In these you have tournaments and odd contest that you must win in order to unlock new bowlers and bowling balls.

At first I did find it difficult to learn how to play (the tutorial isn’t very good.) It didn’t take me, or my wife, long to figure it out on our own. While I’m bowling a 166 I have noticed that the more I play the higher my score is getting. By tonight I should be up in the 200s.

The inclusion of personal soundtrack was nice but I did enjoy the included music as it just fit with the game. Also for any Dualshock 3 owners out there it does support rumble.

While I feel 98% of the game is gold. I do have a few gripes. First is the aforementioned tutorial. There are no instructions on how to play or operate (or at least I couldn’t find it). Second is that each bowler has his/her own comment during and after each frame. You will start to notice by the 3-4 frames that they will constantly repeat themselves. While funny at first you start to get annoyed with them half way through the match. If the developer would have included an “on/off” option that would have been greatly appreciated. Overall I think the game is worth the $10.65 I spent and can’t wait to play again tonight.

Does anyone have any impression they want to share? Also if anyone has questions feel free to ask.

I downloaded this last night, but haven't had a chance to play. Planning on it tonight.

How are you holding the controller when bowling?

It’s hard to explain without a picture. Basically you hold the controller vertically with the d-pad side down and the controller horns (I don’t know what else to call them) toward you. You place your thumb on the X button; your index on the R1 and pinky on the L1. I know its sounds complicated but I got use to it after one game. And I had no fear of releasing the controller in to HD TV!!

Hmm, i actually didnt realize this was motion controlled, as I havent been following news of the game. Sounds interesting though. I think my family will love this around Xmas time if I bring my PS3 around, and will probably guarantee a sale from my two brothers.

I do feel this game is for anyone. From plying with buddies with a couple of beers to playing a round of strip bowling with the wife and or girlfriend...

A couple of my takeaways:

1. This game helps to offer some alternatives for the wii ecentric person
2. Like wii games, I get bored after about 20 min with this title
3. DEF the game for when your hosting a party
4. Def a need for some sorta strap, the way you have to hold the controller makes me worry about hitting the TV. My 5 yr old loved the game, but he did let loose of the controller and my heart stopped!!

And? I'm a big user of the 'and/or' device, but I'm not sure if that was a good place for it. Unless that's just how you roll, then awesome, post photos please.

Are you able to play by using the controller normally? Or is it motion-sensing only?

Nope its motion only. While you may have Lair flashbacks because of this fear not! It's actually fun!

I'm looking forward to this game now. Don't know when we're going to get it in the UK though.

My only worry is that if I get my parents to have a go they might end up launching my sixaxis at the TV

I never tried out Lair, but did hear about it's awful controls. HVB seems fun though - I was interested in the game when I first learned of it a few months ago. I usually like to sit back and play games, but I'll probably have to give it a try.

Yes you can use your own music, I downloaded my I-pod to the PS3 and I listen to that while playing. I just really hope this game will get an update to play online, so I can play my friends from home!
