I think at the time of their release in 97 Rick McCallum said if they hadn't restored the original version then they would have been lost. What happened to these restorations? They were scanned digitally? I can't imagine that there was some magic process where the new effects were added without having the theatrical editions restored. I didn't mind them cleaning up the see through snowspeeders etc that was a logical move some of the others weren't. As one of the previous posters mentioned once a film is released it belongs to the world at least to some extend. It's not like Star Wars fans are asking for points on the back end. Wait that's a good idea, float the original trilogy on the stock market you'll soon get your restoration fee...

**gets ready to be flayed alive, movie forum style**

So here goes:

I understand complaints but still find it bizarre. A keen Star Wars fan would still surely upgrade to these hd versions despite the 5% changes over theatrical. Surely??

No?? Then it seems like you're cutting your nose merely to spite your face. The glass is 95% full and just 5% empty. Seems odd to stick with the laserdisc prints. 5% stuff you don't like vs crap visual & sound quality.

They have been butchered, we are not talking subtle changes. Every addition sticks out like a sore thumb. Would you happily buy them if they were DNR heavy like Predator? Doubt it, but you are asking to overlook something as bad if not worse. I doubt the films sets are going to be cheap, so paying top dollar for an inferior cut of the film just doesn't make sense to me.

I believe they replaced every bit of film where a new special effect was added, so those bits would be in awful condition. Some say that Lucas made them be thrown away, but I find that very doubtful. Anyway, it can be restored, it just needs time and money.

While I don't approve of the changes made, I will still buy the box set. I love the prequels, and even the altered trilogy is still Star Wars. I wouldn't say the changes add up to 5&, though. The movies have been changed enough to warrant the theatrical versions, also in HD.

United Kingdom Star Wars Fan... I Guess.

I'm not the biggest fan of Star Wars. I've seen them all in the cinema, although I'm sure that some would say I haven't seeing as 4-6 were the Special Editions (sorry I wasn't born early enough for the first times), but I am excited.

I think that they're gonna deliver a great collection of films in beautiful 1080 with (I'm Guessing) an awesome array of DTS-HD MA's. A great load of Extras, why complain?

All these people who complain about 'The Raping Of Their Childhood's' and crap like that. CALM DOWN.

I'm not the biggest fan so I don't really take it too personally when there are changes. Even a great film that I really love being re-edited wouldn't make me feel the need to shout at anyone who's excited about that new version.

Also, the real way to watch them is 1-6. They're called 'PREQUELS', they come first. When The Hobbit comes out I will watch it followed by The LOTR's Trilogy, because it's first chronologically. It's all cannon, accept it.

I surely hope they will Digitally Remaster the Yoda from TPM (episode 1), 'cause that puppet... it gets me angry.

That puppet has more character than the rest of the entire cast.

So you are saying that all you've known is the altered versions? Well it would make sense you not being bothered by the changes. I wouldn't go as far as saying Lucas "raped my childhood", but it does frustrate me that the version of the film I grew up with has basically been shelved by Lucas.

I would love to see Star Wars in 1080p but the alterations ruin it for me, the theatrical versions were included on the DVDs but in terrible shape (for a start they were letterboxed 4:3).

The Phantom Menace Yoda is just wrong on so many different levels. Empire Yoda on the other hand is a masterpiece. I think Frank Oz has mentioned why Yoda in Episode One is so bad on one of the DVD's, something to do with the way the new puppeteers scrunch their hands up if I remember.

Yoda spent the entire time in Ep.01 looking like he did have a hand up his bottom.

Hopefully we'll see two sets of trilogy's released as I'd imagine the full set will be 60-80 pounds and as much as I love Star Wars isn't something I could justify.

I very much doubt it'll be released as two trilogies, because it's been announced as one box set with all six films and Fox will likely make more sales with a complete box set.

But surely two seperate trilogy box sets would cost more than one big box set.

No. Although to be fair, even if they were presented as such, that would still be a truly massive PQ upgrade from the laserdisc version.

Edit: Am curious so have to ask. How do you feel about Empire Strikes Back? Have those alterations also 'butchered' the film?

The set will probably have a very fair price. The original trilogy dvd boxset was around 30 pounds or so. Upon initial release.

I'd say of the 3, Empire Strikes Back is the least affected. While not perfect the changes are definitely more subtle.

So for a 6 film set, what do you reckon around £60-£70?

All I know is Hahn better shoot first! None of that Greedo crap. The original version was the best for Star Wars and Empire.

Well, I do remember seeing them on VHS, in their original form but I guess I didn't spend much time knowing them that way before the changes. The only real differences I can remember seeing before the update was the lack of the stupid singing thing in Jabba's Palace, and the absence of Christiansen at the end of Jedi. Those do seem like stupid alterations to make, and I'm sure that experiencing a trilogy of such alterations would begin to grind on me.

I do get what people are annoyed about, I really do.

I just can't help but think that I would be happy to get the films with new HD transfers and audio, even if there are some minor edits.

The only comprehensive 'changes' list you will ever need:

Part 1 - http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/a...-part-one.html

Part 2: http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/a...-part-two.html

Part 3: http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/a...art-three.html

Part 4: http://www.dvdactive.com/editorial/a...part-four.html

I downloaded and saved these pages a couple years ago now.

I've just finished the documentry's on the original trilogy and The Phantom Menace from the DVD's. I may be alone but I think TPM is still my favourite out of the new films it just feels different (more Star Wars-sy) to the other two although they have some fantastic set pieces in them. I rate TPM slightly higher although I still wish they'd cut Ewan's hair for the re-shoots and not used that awful wig (which probably looked good in real life) which stands out like a sore thumb. And Jar-Jar never bothered me. Any takers for TPM as the best of the prequels?
