It just seems to be the one title that is an anomaly.
In Transformers week PE on BD & HD combined sold fewer than 4,000 units (if we assume TF sold 115,000).

In SM3 week PE on BD & HD combined sold approx. 4,800 units (if we assume SM3 + Spidey Trilogy sold 130,000).

This past week it looks like PE combined sales were in the region of 45,000 units (if DH4 sold around 30,000). That's quite a big jump.

Edit: The previous week PE also sold well with over 20,000 units combined (assuming 90,000 for DH4).

All in all, I would say it was a pretty good week for Blu!
(Numbers updated every Friday.)
So, in a week where neither HD Dud or blu had a new release advantage, we only manage a 58:42 victory. To me this week shows the most neutral release date in weeks. We need more then a 60:40 ratio to show that blu is the superior format. What this shows is that if we don't release anything, HD closes the gap. When there isn't anything really to buy, it's a close game.

Question:

When does a nielsen week begin/end? If I bought a BD today (a Friday) will it count for this week (movie releases on the 4th) or for next week (movie releases on the 11th)?

Unlike HD-DVD, BD had huge weeks and BOGO's either side of this last week, time for a break.

Again, we are putting the same emphasis on this weeks ratios as Black Friday and next week (POTC 3/Superbad), yet the total for this week will be tiny compared to the other two.

It begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. Your Friday purchase will be included in the week ending Sunday 9th December.

Next week the numbers should be huge for BD. Probably closest to an 80 we will hit with a large volume week. The demographics are covered with nothing from HD DVD. POTC3 and Superbad should be huge hits.

If Superbad manages to keep even a close distant 2nd to POTC3, you know the PS3 gamer influence is going to very pronounced.

HD-DVD had 'Hot Rod' and 'Mr. Bean's Holiday' - two new releases day/date with the standard DVDs.

And Blu still won!

Thanks. I needed to know where I stood should I decide to impulse shop while I'm out.

There are two key factors as to why PE is doing better on HD DVD
1) There are some who think it will work on their DVD player
2) Blu-ray owners have more and better options on which to spend their entertainment dollar.

Yeah,

I think it sells so well on HD DUD because look at what you could get instead,.. Blades of Glory,.. Shrek 3,... I would be tempted to buy Planet Earth too.

I have already posted this, but here goes again.
On Blu Ray side (not counting Omega man, avail on both, or Jin Roh, which I do not think had a US release), we had for about $8M worth of Box office.

On the HD DVD side, for about $180M.

NOT a balanced week by any measure of the mind...

This being said, the result of PE HD DVD does boggle the mind and would require more digging imho.
New HD DVD player sales? From where? that week didn't have any specific "big" firesale unless I am mistaken?
Big promo on that set? Again, from where?
Oprah advertising PE?
International Orders having a sudden surge? Why? From where?

Inquiring mind want to know

This being said, I will make the following predictions for next week (and no, my name is not Nostradamus):

85+ BD -> PS3 sales having a very strong effect on sales (working strategy of including SM3), along with more players sold.

mid 70's-up to low80's, the HD DVD firesales are a bust, and did not influence Software sales much if at all, confirmed. The PS3 sales are starting to have an effect. The 2:1 growing to 3:1 is pretty much locked in.

mid 60's - low 70s for us: just another week. This isn't bad, but not very good either. If on a strong (maybe the strongest so far) Blu Ray week we cannot break the mid 70's barrier, and with 40gb PS3 s that should have some effect, we are in for a stalemate unless some news from elsewhere (hint hint) come change that.

Low 60's : PotC:AWE is a bust, and the end of year strat for Blu Ray dominance has failed. Not the end of the world, but we aren't making progress in a strong week, HD DVD probably did make progress on the other hand to stall BD like this. Residuals from PoTC likely will be unable to prevent a mid-high 50's vs mid high 40's during Bourne Week, hinting to a 4th quarter rather Flat in term of sale dominance.

My prediction for Next week: 80+ BD

I dare say Superbad may outsell Pirates. I went to Walmart and Best Buy yesterday and today and Superbad was nearly sold out while plenty of Pirates 3 copies remained on the shelf.

LOOK!! If you take a peek at some other subjects, I've had many positive things to say, so SIT ON IT RALPH!!

I did my duty this week, I used the $10 of coupon and picked up Pirates.

Just because I think 58:42 is not positive, I'm a troll? There are many others that have voiced the same concern!!!

Most of them have been negative in general. But there is the old ignore button.

yeah he says he posts positive comments...but they are more like backhanded compliments to the efforts of BD...

it's either he's a troll trying to appear unbiased or he's a Blu fan trying too hard to not seem like a "fanboy"..

regardless..we are pro Blu because we are invested in this product and if we said the sky was falling after a mediocre week (which we still won)...that would make us weak...

the HD-DVD camp loses every week and tries relentlessly to spin it as a positive...

we win a bad week (even the Patriots almost lost to the Ravens last week) and try to spin it as a positive (which it is BTW) and we are being delusional?...tell me why he is not a troll again?
