I concur with the recommendations of Taken and Pursuit of Happyness as well.

Taken is just pure Liam Neeson bad***ness. The blu-ray has a special feature that puts a kill count on the top of the screen
Definitely need to check that one out.

Pursuit of Happyness I've only seen once, but I did really enjoy it. I need to revisit it one day. Smith is pretty good in the role which isn't his typical gig. Check it out.

I guess I lied when I said I would never speak to you again. Even though you nearly hated Kick-Ass, you are Mr. Summer. That was one of my favorite romantic comedies from last year and I haven't seen a comedy better than it so far this year. She's Out of My League is the only one I would call good so far, but I also haven't seen ones such as The Other Guys yet since I hardly go to the theater.

Jump on that!

Unless you're waiting for the blu-ray, which I would assume won't be until 2012 at the earliest.

1. Cars
2. Over the Hedge
3. Up
4. Toy Story 2
5. Toy Story
6. Into the Wild
7. Monster House
8. Doogal

I believe thats all that I have seen. The first 5 I listed are either good or excellent while the last 3 arent all that great and Doogal is plain bad! I watched Ratatouille but I wasnt completely focused on it so I wont count that until I watch again. I have many more to see. Got Em!!
When Lion King hits next year make sure you pick it up!
Great movie, my #1 animated movie and one of my favorites period.

Toy Story 3 is a must, Aladdin is a very good one (yea the game was fun! ), add the more recent Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Despicable Me to your list too. They're not up there with the top tier animated movies but they are pretty good and entertaining.

[Show spoiler]From the horrible CGI to horrible acting next to the horrible sets right along the horrible props. This movie is so DAMN bad its GOOD. I truly dont know how to rate this movie. I wanna give it a 5/5 for HORRIBLENESS but i dont wanna make it look grand. But if you have 90 mins of your life to waste on a ENTERTAINING horrible movie then please give this movie a shot. This is amazingly bad on every spectrum of movie making. From the beginning to the end all you will say is WTF. In addition if you pay attention to the film as you would during a psycho thriller you will notice horrible mistakes the editor makes. I truly believe that this movie was made this bad intentionally so i have to rate it accordingly. Just enough to be fresh without being rotten because this has to be the BEST WORSE MOVIE ever made.

MUST SEE NOW!!!!!!!!!! LMFAO.

-5/5 BUT REALLY THIS IS AMAZING
The only movie that rivals 10,000 B.C. for the title of Ultimate Movie.

-I was expecting 1/5 or 2/5, so I was pleasantly surprised by this
-No comparison to the original, which is a solid 5/5 for me.

The good:
-great directing, great score
-great cinematography in China
-Chan was great, and while no comparison to Morita, he was still better than I expected
-stayed very close to the original script, which is a good thing
-Jaden was good, and the bottom line -- better than the low expectations I had

The bad:
-the film couldn't decide whether it was a drama or a Chinese Tourist Film on the travel channel
-way too long at 140 minutes: first 45 minutes and last 45 minutes were core to the Karate Kid story, but the middle hour just went WAY OFF course, and at one point I forgot about the bullies/training/etc because they threw in so much about exploring China, and other incidental plots that were given WAY too much attention

PQ: 5/5 (sick)

AQ: 4.5/5 (also great)
This is on my list of "check that out when I get a chance".

After Troy of course.

EDIT: (to Diesel, Squid, Bearcat, and all the other folks who have recently launched a massive attack on my emotional character, or lack thereof), at the end of the original when they show

True. It was the characters
[Show spoiler]that were convinced of that after running out of gas. I just wasn't convinced, nor did I believe it was a suitable turn of character and judgment.

Quote:
And I certainly cant agree with the comparison to The Road. If you truly believe that one should never give up,
Like I said, given the most extreme circumstances, I could see it as legitimate. The decision in The Mist was not justified by the rest of the film.

I used that comparison because The Road is a literal post-apocalyptic setting with a father and son in desperation... trying to survive. I agree that in The Mist, it was all in their heads. Their only perspective was the storefront and town
[Show spoiler](and his wife's death)
because the mist hid them away from the world. That brings with it a distortion in perspective, but there was no indication of doubt or the abandonment of hope.
[Show spoiler]The biggest risk they take is driving into the mist. That's it. Apparently that's enough to make that kind of decision for his son.

Quote:
then that holds true for Viggos character as well.
[Show spoiler]One day a big wind could arrive and the sun could peek through. With the sun comes the possibility (probability) of plantlife, and with that the ability to raise livestock and fish. He is only one man, just like Janes character, in one small geographic location at a time. He only knows what is in his immediate surroundings. With telecommunications destroyed (both films) they are left with only their own imagination, paranoia, fear, faith and strengths.
Yes, there was a lot going on in his head too. He would think about his wife and was forced to eat whatever he could scavenge. Both men were driven mad for different reasons. But The Road centered on his level of sanity. It was a direct focus of the film. And the gun represented a sense of security and certainty. They didn't have much left in the world, but they still had choice. Thus, those particular intentions contributed to the film significantly. The Mist gives no indication of any lapse of sanity or judgment on the part of the character. Jane is facing a cataclysmic and mysterious force beyond the mist and keeps pushing forward the entire film.
[Show spoiler]How long does it take to run out of gas? How much time and effort did they take actually trying to survive? If help was anywhere near, shouldn't it arrive eventually? It never did in The Road, thus group suicide will inevitably be contemplated at the least. But hope for the eventual arrival of help alone is worth looking for a safer hideout. They abandoned hope much too easily and abruptly imo.

Quote:
[Show spoiler]Another reason The Road is not a fair comparison is the "villain". Viggo is up against a villain he completely understands. He understands their motives, their thinking, their strategies etc. More importanly, he knows exactly what it takes to defeat his villain. Additionally, he is of equal physical prowess (for all intents and purposes) in a one-on-one duel. There are no mysteries to weigh upon him psychologically. He continues to find food, so it's conceivable that he may also find weapons and ammo one day.

Janes character however, is up against a wide variety of enemies, none of which he has ANY understanding, and all of which appear to be vastly superior killing machines.
Agreed. But The Road takes place after a much longer and enduring period of time and directly explores faith and hopelessness. In The Mist, you get no indication that Jane is struggling with doubts. Sure, you can see their
[Show spoiler] escape from the store
as desperation, but it was just as much the protagonist's concoction.
[Show spoiler]So their journey "into the mist" is what drove them nuts.
If that was the idea, it suffers from poor execution and delivery.

Quote:
[Show spoiler]I think if we are setting a standard for appropriate post apocolyptic parental behavior, then it most certainly should apply to both characters equally.
Very fair, you have your case. I do disagree though

You seem to have a very diverse taste and appreciate complex movies, as well as a lot of other stuff.

21 Grams - has similar elements to Babel (same director) and Magnolia.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (similar feel to Closer).

Lost Highway (Lynch - closest to Mulholland Dr.).

Blue Velvet (more Lynch).

Any Hayao Miyazaki based on your love of Pixar - Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro and Sprited Away are all 5/5 and I'm really curious to see what you think.

Grave of the Fireflies - no reason other than it's an animated masterpiece.

Taken - good action fun with a real actor (blows Collateral away).

Amelie - just great, not because of your faves. Full of detail, humor, quirky stories and Audrey Tautou.

I assume you have seen The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile? Same director as The Mist. Better films and stronger acting.

Vertigo - complex plot, great acting, classic Hitchcock.

Chungking Express - quirky Criterion goodness.

Doubt - story sounds boring, but it isn't. Great acting all round.

The Pursuit of Happyness - You gave Seven Pounds 4.5 and this is the same director and an even better performance from Will Smith.

The Reader - set in Germany - Winslet is superb.

12 Monkeys - You seem to like Gilliam.
thanks for the input steve! much appreciated
i actually own Collateral. really, really enjoy the movie. it's on my "pending" shelf because i'm sure if it's one i want to own because i don't know how many times i'll watch it - which is part of my personal "own it or not?" system of doing things with that being said though, the first day it came out on blu (blind buy) i watched it about 3 times in 2 days. very good stuff. and very underrated film imo.

and i have seen Taken. great, fun, action filled film. it's one of those i always forget to maybe buy because everyone once and awhile you need some bad @ss action movies, and this would do the trick.

i have not seen The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile or Pursuit of Happyness

needless to say, all of your selections have been added to my list of "rent sooner than later". thanks again for the input

In this order.

1) Terminator 2 really enjoyed it. a great sci-fi film.
2) Ratatouille i may not like it all that much, but it's still Pixar and it's still good fun
3) Avatar this is really the only selection i disagree with. i wasn't a big fan
4) Wall-E enjoyed it a lot. i think it's like, my 6th favorite Pixar, but still gave it a 4.5/5
5) Dumb and Dumber one of the best comedies ever
6) Ip Man haven't seen it
7) Sunshine really, really enjoy everything, but the third act brings it down a lot for me
8) Toy Story 3 love it. love all of them.
9) Terminator Salvation i felt Salvation was the "worst" of the Terminator films, but i know i'm in the minority with that
10) Monster Inc/Up both are 5/5's from me. more Pixar greatness
i may not have these on my favorites list, but i do love most of them.

No Country for Old Men
i love Phone Booth, Farrell's best performance imo. i think it's severely underrated. i remember when it came out on dvd i went to go buy it and i asked the lady, "excuse me, do you know where Phone Booth is?" and she's like, "yes, there's one right next to the bus stop at the front of the store". ... took me a minute to figure out why she said that

ha, yeah looking at that list, which are all either classics and / or award winners someone's gonna think i just had well known films certainly not the case, but i wasn't a big fan of those. and i still think There Will Be Blood is the pinnacle of western-dramas (different from standard westerns or spaghetti westerns imo) and NCFOM would be third on the list behind TWBB and Jesse James. i'm sure i'm in the minority there though.

I'm sure I'm definitely in the minority on that one

There's no argument here. Spaghetti Westerns have good stories but a mainly action movies, and mainly rip offs of samurai flicks lol. I still have to see Wages of Fear to really say if today's Westerns are better than the older ones. I know i really enjoyed 3:10 to Yuma.

NO i liked it allot. It tells you the full story behind Skynet and the true purpose of a "terminator". I look at it like this if you liked T1 and T2 but hated Salvation then you were never a fan of the story . You just were a fan of Arnold.
