Determining what is good, great, mediocre, or bad acting is all subjective. It's about how the performance resonates with a particular viewer of the film/play.
Now, of course some performances are usually widely agreed upon for being great or for being horrible.

But

Someone could win the Best Actor/Actress Oscar and many other awards and be universally praised by critics....does that mean that they were without a doubt, undeniably fantastic? Nope. It just means they were fantastic to all of those people based on what they consider great acting.
It doesn't make it a fact.

So, saying The Godfather is a greater film than Apocalypse Now is subjective. Saying they're both great films is objective. Saying Jolie's performance is good is objective. Saying it was the best performance of the year is subjective.
i kind of agree with Diesel here. what makes a great performance? i think that personally varies for everyone.

let's say you have 10 people who didn't hear anything about Changeling, and more specifically, the performance of Jolie which was nominated left and right all year (which i do agree with btw, but just using this as an example). and let's say you tell these 10 people "once the film is done, write down which performance you feel was best", which would be #1? Jolie? Malkovich? the police detective? the kid? someone else?

i personally don't really have anything that i measure what a "great performance" should be, i kind of just think there is a great performance when it hooks me into the film / character and the portrayal of the character is well done and doesn't take me out of the film. did Jolie's performance sink me into the film? definitely. did the performances in The Godfather do the same thing? no. i didn't feel they were GREAT performances.

but then again it might deal with the subject matter: Jolie in Changeling is a mother missing a child and whatnot, so her performance could probably be more recognizable by someone who's known someone who's even missed their kid for a few seconds. meanwhile in The Godfather, i don't know any gangsters so i don't know how they act, talk or their body language, so i have nothing to base it against so while i found it to be good acting, there was nothing that stood out to me.

just my 2 cents

thanks Al, i'll make sure i stay away from Seed. i've never heard of it, but i'm gonna make sure i don't forget to stay away from it. that's the last thing i want to see. and yeah, The Butterfly Effect really pissed me off the first time i saw the dog scene and every time i watch the film i skip that scene. even if i'm watching it with someone who hasn't seen it, i'm not watching that. and just thinking about it makes me want to kill that little f***er right now

needless to say, it still irks me obviously

Even if I love a movie, I can't turn off my computer to watch it. All movies kind of drag in parts and being online gives me something else to do while the movie is running.

It was great, but not that great!
[Show spoiler]Annie Wilkes would smash your ankle into 1000 pieces one minute, and then 5 minutes later, give you a genuine smile, say she loves you and serve you warm brownies!!

That's oxymoronic. Films can have objective qualities but to claim an entire performance as factually fantastic is pretty ridiculous. Sorry jhiggy, can't side with you on this one.

We should all have a BD live group screening of a movie we've all never seen.

(if or when that's even possible)

I'd see Misery if Kathy Bates weren't uglier than dog poo smeared across dry dog poo.

this was something people did during episodes of LOST on lostpedia, they would be on a chat / message board and be like "oh my god did you see that!" "i hate commercials!" and then "oh i think i missed something!" uh, yeah, probably because you're typing and not paying attention dumb @ss!

and i forgot to tell you guys, speaking of not paying attention... when i rented The Fountain a few weeks ago, the next day when i rented some more movies the guy was like, "so how was The Fountain" and i told him it was great and all but needed repeat viewings. and he's says - i kid you not - "yeah, i couldn't really follow it. but then again i was playing videogames at the same time so i probably missed some stuff"

...

really Captain Obvious? you might miss details while watching a movie AND playing videogames?! i was like, "seriously? you were playing games while watching a movie you'd never seen before? why even bother watching it?" and then he just stood there all dumbfounded that i questioned and attacked him about it but seriously, what an idiotic move.
