Are returns counted in Nielsen numbers? (Like the next weeks weekly ratio or the times when we get total discs or YTD for each based on Nielsen numbers)
I would assume HDDVD would have more returns due to thinking it would play on a DVD player than BD would have. (these are made up numbers: Like 1% of total BD discs sold more than BD returns, 500k BD discs sold 500 BD's returned 5500 HDDVD discs(1% of 500k + 500= 5500) with the 65:35 YTD ratio 500k:269k (65.02:34.98) subtract the returns in my example and the ratio moves to 65.38:34.62 my example adds .36% to the ratio) If there is a major difference in returns of the 2 formats it could be enough to change YTD by 1% if returns are not subtracted from the count. |

Is Mr. T Blu ? I know he raids every night in Azeroth to get better epic gear
![]() http://youtube.com/watch?v=1bsOKH3_DNo All the HD DVD increases are due to 10-12 free movies upon buying a player. The only other real spike was from Transformers. |

Does not surprise me. In the past 2 weeks I have received a eMail everyday from Amazon touting "the new next generation in home video. High Definition HD DVD". I have received offer after offer on/or special discounts on this "wonderful new and next step in home video."
Never mind the fact I have never bought or had any reason to even look at a HD DVD video release page on Amazon. Head over to imdb.com (a Amazon company) You would think Toshiba, and the HD DVD group bought every ad available. I think the HD DVD backers are spending every penny they can get their hands on this holiday season on ads, because they know if it does not happen for them this Christmas it aint going to happen. |

I got one that will make you laugh. I just read on avs hd-dvd sales thread, someone said...
"The best weeks are those which do not have any must-own titles released. This past week was good, as well as the week where the Kubrick titles came out. Neither of them had a summer blockbuster to skew the numbers, and neither of them had BOGO deals. Both of them were around 58:42. This is a positive sign for HD DVD because most weeks won't have summer blockbuster titles being released." I guess according to HD-DVD guys, Blockbuster movies skew the numbers? I also love how there are positive signs for people when they lose. |

Seems like HD-DVD is trying their hardest to get their format to do good. I think the J and R $9.99 blu-ray sale is going to help blu-ray big time.

I have to admit I was slightly worried about this upcoming week (Bourne/HP), but I am now more confident than ever as it seems the BDA and retailers have put together an awesome strategy for the week. We have a Sony BOGO at Best Buy, and our first sub-$300 player at all major retailers. We have some AMAZING deals at BB for HDTV + Blu combos, and not to mention, a lot of great advertising!
My in-laws just called me from Fry's in Houston to inform me Fry's was having a Fox BOGO. We also have an Amazon BOGO for Warner. As far as I can tell DuD has nothing lined up for the week other than the Amazon 12 movie sale. I might be over confident at this point, but I am going to up my prediction to easily above 65% for the week. Go Blu! |

The funny thing about the HD DVD promotions is that they give away most of the best HD DVDs for free, typically leaving Transformers as the only worthwhile title left to buy.
They've given away King Kong, Heroes, 300, The Departed, Bourne Identity & Supremacy, Batman Begins, etc., etc. What is left for the red crowd to actually buy? They insult the BOGO sales, but at least it's even up, as we actually buy a title to get a 2nd free. HD DVD, it's like a one-time purchase and open-shut consumer relationship. One cheap player is bought, they throw 7-15 movies at you, you buy Transformers, and it's a wrap. |

I know that the numbers matter, but why are there so many of these threads? Sorry I don't buy a Blu Ray because the numbers on Amazon are low. I buy the movies I want and leave it at that. Besides, hd dvd has a lot of catching up to to beat Blu Ray anyway. I find it funny that they include the numbers for the 12 free hd dvd's. Seems like something Toshiba would pull.
