Just picked up Modern Times (sadly, on DVD, as my store was out of the Blu and I'm not patient enough to wait or order online) and was thoroughly impressed. It was a total blind buy and my first experience of Chaplin and I was definitely not disappointed. Still amazed at how relevant the story is today, some 70 odd years later, and how much I laughed at it; MUCH funnier than most comedies I've seen from that era. Here's hoping Criterion puts out some more Chaplin!

For everyone that missed it on announcements day...

And, can you believe it... 1,000 pages of totally useless ramblings. I'm glad to have contributed.

That does seem like an appropriate way to start page 1000.

So, for the 1000th page, a question: When Criterion finally gets around to spine #1000, do you think it will be released on Blu-ray, or some other format?

I guess I'll have to wait for the page 1000 party as I am only on the 500 page party.

Wish I were there at the party with everyone.

The 500 page party isn't so bad if anyone cares to join.

My 8 CCs that I ordered arrived this afternoon around 4ish EST.

Criterion should just release packaging. They'd make a fortune.

If they made toilet paper or bottled water, I would buy it.

Blu-ray, or we'll never see it. Blu-ray is the last physical disc medium (which will hopefully be around for a while). There's no purpose in another format because you already have 1) HD picture, 2) lossless audio, 3) enough storage space that a 22-episode hour long TV series fits of 4-5 discs, which is more than reasonable. The only thing to benefit the consumer more is means of distribution / instant availability, and the answer to that is streaming online in one form or another.

I prefer the physical copy to streaming.

I can't imagine owning a digital file of Lawrence of Arabia in HD. I'd rather have the disc.

Happy 1000 and even more discursive commenting and our inkling towards more commodity fetishism!
