The death of Mick is the saddest "coach" death I've ever seen in a sports movie. Rocky 1-3 are great, 4 is okay, 5 is a joke, never seen 6 and probably never will.

"man is the one who makes science moral or immoral" ... "understand this is not madness"

i love a good, perplexing, thought provoking puzzler, and i got exactly that with Solaris, Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 Soviet Union sci-fi gem. almost too much so! clocking in at 166 minutes there is a lot to think about once the film ends (especially with it's "whoa, WTF?!" ending) and a lot going on throughout the entire running time.

one film that of course Solaris feels like, is 2001: A Space Odyssey. both are very slow moving,
[Show spoiler]thoughtful and theme heavy films. and you really cannot compare the two because they are VASTLY different films in every possible way (aside from being over 2+ hours, sci-fi and puzzling films), but both are great. but if you find 2001 to be slow and can't get it, then steer clear of Solaris!

the film gives you no solid answers as to what is happening. so if you're someone who needs solid, fact based answers that are handed to you in a manner similar to a sledgehammer shot to the head, then steer clear. because the thinking is all left up to you, which i love. and what is happening? well, without giving too much away it's about a space station's crew that's monitoring an ocean in the Solaris system. and it's no ordinary ocean. so psychologist Kris Kelvin (donatas banionis ) goes to Solaris to investigate what is happening. and Kris experiences what simply cannot be explained.

i loved the film, however, i definitely am not anywhere close to understanding it. i'm sure i've barely scratched the surface of what is hidden inside the complex film and i anxiously await another viewing. it simply demands it. it demands 100% of your attention and demands you to think about what is happening and what it all means. i personally made a list of about 25 questions i have after the first viewing and by no means do i feel i will ever answer them all.

highly recommended to sci-fi fans ("old school" sci-fi fans who enjoy the slow burning type of film), drama and films with an eerie atmosphere and dark themes. i loved it

there is no action. this is a character piece, this is a film about the depths of consciousness, love, loss, regret, forgiveness and yourself interacting with the very, very, very unknown and unexplainable.

i'll give it a day or two to think about it, and then i'll dive back in happily. notebook in hand. brain emptied of everything else. and ready to figure out some of the riddles of this genius foreign film

a score really wouldn't justify the film and i couldn't really give a score because i know i will be watching again to understand the film fully. but if i had to give a score, it would definitely be a 5/5. i can already tell this is gonna be on my mind all night. and i already know it's a great first choice for the Review Club's initial film discussion

5/5

Man u just scared me even more. I already had my doubts and now u just compared it to maybe the most boring film in the world! Got Em!!

That's probably about what I would give Rocky V. 3.5 or 3.75. Need to watch it again to be sure.

[Show spoiler]Thank you surfdude and squidpuppet for the recommendation. It’s not really the type of film I’m usually interested in. But it is worthwhile seeing at least once.

To get the negativity out of the way, my chief complaint about this film would be the same for any other film of this type (hence the reason I’m not into it that much). As a life’s-journey-type story, there’s not much conflict going on, aside from some man-vs-nature themes here and there, and perhaps man-vs-himself. Stories like these usually don’t keep my interest.

But, I can see some value in it, for sure. The first half-hour or so did remind me of a trip I took last year to Utah; I was on my own, free and independent in the wide-open desert, free to explore. In that respect, I could relate to the main character, his ideals, way of life, and everything else. Heck, it’s hard not to like the guy.

As such, I can also see the parallels between the guy’s journey and life in general, starting off in the safety of home and moving on independently, both literally and figuratively, into the wild. It’s also clear that this is a movement away from society toward nature. I’m sure there are other issues and themes buried beneath.

As a film, it’s pretty slick and stylish. Editing and transitions are interesting, and most of the photography looks splendid. Acting is strong, writing is not bad, and the narration adds a rather poetic flavor to the whole thing. And the music is rather interesting; perhaps even powerful in some parts.

3/5 (entertainment: 2.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 4/5, intellectual impact: 3/5)

Reccomendation: Yep!
aww shucks sorry you didn't enjoy it more Al, but since this type of film isn't your usual cup of tea at least to still watched it and least somewhat enjoyed, and that's all that matters

Road to Perdition

Director: Sam Mendes
Writers: Max Allan Collins (graphic novel), and Richard Piers Rayner (graphic novel)
Mains: Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Daniel Craig and Paul Newman

"This is the life we Choose, The Road to Destruction"

Plot: Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks)is a hit man that works for a dangerous mob boss. When i hit goes wrong all things fall apart. Sullivan and his son are on the run after the slaughter of their family. In this Road they will learn to work with each other and overcome the challenges that will ultimately tighten their bond as father and son. Mixed with jealously, hatred and revenge the Road to Perdition is a fun ride with no falls/gaps in the plot.

My Take: Very enjoyable entertainment with amazing performances by the entire cast. First time i've seen Tom in this role and it was quite a pleaser. Everyone was amazing, i especially liked the dark character that Jude Law reenacted. It was truly i different type of gangster movie that will grow with me. Based of a graphic novel Sam Mendes did an excellent job of directing. The most rememerable part of the film is the ending shot excellently and had a very dark pleasant but evil theme.

Conclusion: Road to Perdition is a very fun entertaining mob like film. Very different for the usual mobster flicks and host more themes than your average film of this genre. Tom Hanks is unforgettable, really showing off his range in this film. Overall fun film decent replay value.

Highly Recommended

The Last Airbender

Year = 2010
Director = M. Night Shyamalan
Country = USA
Actors = Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz

I am not even sure how to start with this one. Been spending the last 5 months hearing how this was the worst movie ever made since Plan 9 From Outer Space I have to say I cannot agree. I think the movie does what it does well. Acting is alright when you consider 80% of the cast are young kids with not much experience. It might help as well that I have seen the series three full times already and as such it's easier for me to fill some of the missing spots. The one draw back is that it just move too fast and I can see how that would make people confuse. They reduce 20 half hour episodes in 103 minutes. It might have gone a little better if they would have either made the movie longer or better yet split in two. Overall a fun 103 minutes for me and I will add this to my collection soon enough.

It's not about caring for his daughter...it's about caring that HE cares for his daughter. This guy retires from a job he loved with friends he loved just to move out and live a pretty boring and mundane life to be in the city as her; even though he barely gets to see/interact with her. Her being taken is a HUGE thing for this character, so you're supposed to want him to beat the snot out of these guys and get his daughter back and be happy.

It works for me very well, I give it a 4.75/5. My #2 of last year.

I saw the trailer for this a few times but it never really looked like something that interested me. I've heard things on different sides, its good, its bad, its horrible, its pretty good. Kind of surprised its that short though.

Surprised such a huge Vin Diesel fan feels that way about that particular "brand" of movie.

Such a funny movie, smartly written and features strong performances from the entire younger part of the cast, in particular the Plastics and Lizzy Caplan.

Today's second movie (more to come, as today is another Saturday Movie Day for me).

Fantastic Four

This movie gets some hate but I really enjoy it.

The story is pretty simple and straight forward. Scientist wants to go out into space to do some experiments, him and his buddy can't get funding from anyone so they turn to an old "friend" for the cash. He agrees (with steep stipulations), they go up, things don't go as planned, they come back down and develop powers. And it goes from there.

Let's start with the actors. A lot has been said about the actors not being right for their roles and them not doing a good job...but I (mostly) disagree. I discussed this in my review for the second regarding their fit for the role and their performances in that one.

The one who most seem to like is Michael Chiklis. He's definitely my favorite in the films, as I mentioned in my review for the second film. He's great for the role and definitely turns in the best performance in both film.

Evans is a nice fit for Storm and does a good job at the cocky, wisecracking, less-than-mature team member. He delivers the humor lines he has (which is a large portion of his dialog, as he is the least serious character in a not very serious film) very well and succeeds in making me laugh every time. Can't wait to see him in what will likely be an opposite role as Captain America.

Alba has probably gotten the most flack, but again, I like her in the role. It's no secret that she isn't a top quality actor, but she turns in a solid performance in this one. She doesn't have any moments (well no one does) but she also doesn't have any moments in her performance...unless you count the horrible line they make her say at the end of the film, which isn't her fault. More on that later.

My thoughts on Ioan Gruffudd are the same as the second film. He does a solid job as Richards, but just doesn't give the performance (or have the writing) to really make you think he's this brilliant character like you have with Tony Stark or even Bruce Wayne, who isn't portrayed as a genius in the films but you can tell he's a very intelligent man. With better writing for his character he might have done better.

Julian McMahon does (like the others) a good job too. There were complaints about him as Doom, but I like him in the role I like his change as the movie goes on, even though it is not a large jump, from a....well an a-hole....to being an actual villain in the later portion of the film.

Like I said, they all do good or solid, nothing really standout but nothing bad for me. So my complaints are minor. And when you put them all together they work well together. Evans and Chiklis are easily the best combination of the five main actors. They're hilarious together and work good off of each other.

The humor in the film succeeds with me. I laugh at just about all of it. So good marks there.

Like I mentioned a little with the actors, there is definitely problems with the writing. I'm not expecting this to be top tier, award winning writing (and I doubt anyone would)....but can we at least use some basic logic and common sense for it please? I enjoy it overall like I said, but there's just some "What the hell?" moments in this film. First,
[Show spoiler]Jessica Alba's character has to strip down to....do what exactly? They say its to get through the crowd because Johnny and Reed can't get through....yet when she strips down (not without fading back into view so we can see her in her underwear of course ) and goes through the crowd...Reed and Johnny simply walk behind an ambulance and get through without a problem. So why did she have to do that? For us to see Jessica Alba in her underwear of course (I'm not complaining about that though but at least have a real reason for her doing it).
Second, Ben's weight is incredibly inconsistent throughout the film. Sometimes he's heavy enough to bend a steel beam by standing on it, sometimes he is just too heavy to ride an elevator but not too heavy to sit in a booth at a diner, and so on and so forth. How about some consistency? Third, the dialog is mostly fine with me. It's serviceable. But there is one line that never ceases to irk me. Maybe it's not annoying for some people, but for me its just so . At the end
[Show spoiler]Reed kneels to propose to Sue and then he kisses her when she's invisible...but he doesn't kiss her lips, he kisses her on the nose. She turns visible again and says, "That's my nose silly, these are my lips."
Its just such a stupid and annoying line to me, I hate it so. Fourth, there is one part of the movie where a couple scenes are obviously not in the correct order. 1st scene shown - Sue has to flee and take her clothes off and turn invisible to get away, leaving them in the street. 2nd scene shown - they are all at the table for breakfast and Sue is wearing the clothes she just left in the street. They are flip flopped in the film and should be shown in reverse order with the scene that comes after the breakfast scene in the film coming before the street scene. So instead of 1, 2, 3 it should be 2, 3, 1.

The special effects of the film are mostly good. The light bending and force fields for Sue are pretty good looking and the fire effects for Johnny are very nice. The iffy things all come from Reed; but that's expected since his isn't something like fire or light, they had to make it look like this guy's body could stretch and twist in any way he wanted it to, which is pretty difficult to convincingly illustrate.

Complaints aside, its still a fun and entertaining movie overall, which is all it tries to be and all I expect it to be.

Rating - 4/5

I really enjoyed this film. I could relate very easily to the characters; earlier in the decade both of my parents had to settle the estates of their deceased mothers.

What do we leave behind after we die? What do we take from those who have passed on? How important are material things to a sense of self, family, identity, memory, and the future? A very good film.

Not sure why this movie is so hated, what were people expecting, super serious films like Nolan's Batmans? I thought the Alba kiss line was fine, he kissed the wrong part of her face and she corrected him, what was she supposed to say?

after watching Punch Drunk Love for the first time in about 18 months, i can safely say it is anderson's quirkiest and oddest film to date. part drama, part comedy, part romance... the film really dives into a whole bunch of unexpected territories.

let's look at the first three minutes of the film shall we?

barry egan (sandler, in a fantastic performance) is on the phone double checking that he can buy microwavable dinners and get frequent flyer miles with no loopholes. he then exits his "office", which is a storage facility, to witness a terrible car accident and then have a van pull up and drop off a miniature piano.

safe to say, i can't think of a more "WTF?" opening scene in any other movie.

the film i will say takes time to sink its teeth into you. the abrupt way it starts, the inability to connect to barry right away because we don't know what the fudge is going on - or know anything aout him - makes it a bit hard to follow and / or connect, but in time we get there. barry has seven very demanding and smothering sisters, and in time we learn he's an uneasy middle aged man who may be mental unstable (i always laugh hysterically when
[Show spoiler]he punches / breaks the glass screen doors, like he did when he was younger, only that time he had a hammer
), possibly because of his obsessive sisters trying to control his life.

the first time i saw PDL (way back in 2002) i hate it. of course, that's because this was sandler's first serious role and i thought it was a full blown comedy (like everything else he had done until this point). but over the last 4 years or so i've watched it about 6-7 times and i love it. it's quirky charm, it's lovably flawed characters and sandler's performance are all to be complimented. as are the writing and directing, with cinematography being no slouch. not to mention the super thick awesome atmosphere that's like no other film i've seen!

PDL really does stand out as anderson's most easily obtuse-like film in that all his other films are... much more static and structured in a normal nature. but PDL is just so off-beat, so wild in imagination while still feeling extremely real and perplexing.

i used to think that There Will Be Blood was anderson's most clashing work among fans (either you love it or hate it because people (somehow) find it "boring") but i think Punch Drunk Love is actually more deserving of that clash. not saying it's a bad film. but a lot will not want to follow along and figure out what's happening. some will watch the first 20 minutes, not laugh or understand and be disgruntled. shame for those who don't take the time to dive into this brilliantly deep and heartfelt piece of art.

and after watching it again tonight / this morning i rest assured that this is sandler's best performance to date (although Reign Over Me ain't far behind). his facial expressions, his speech delivery... honestly, all sandler traits are 'subdued' here and if you were just listening to him speak, you wouldn't recognize him. he's outstanding and shows he actually can act and not just scream and holler.

not my favorite anderson film, and not a perfect film, but i love it. it's easily in my top 50 favorite movies and cannot wait till this hits blu-ray. a must see imo, but i would suggest a rental because i can see a lot of people not getting it and hating it. shame really.
5/5
Not a lot of people give Sandler a chance in "serious" roles. Since you enjoy him, I strongly recommend Spanglish if you havent seen it. A nice romantic drama with a small spalsh of humor.
