Default God of War III officially PS3-bound

God of War III officially PS3-bound
Quote:
In March, Sony Computer Entertainment America held a lavish launch party in San Francisco for God of War II. In the course of the celebrations, Cory Barlog, the game's outspoken director, dropped some none-too-subtle hints that the series would be coming to the PlayStation 3 along with force feedback.

"If we were to do a God of War III on the PS3," Barlog told the enthusiastic crowd. "We're excited about the potential--maybe, no commitment, no announcement or anything like that--to maybe have [God of War hero] Kratos in 1080p with the Sixaxis and vibration. Vibration is coming back to the PS3, that's pretty cool, huh?"

At the time of Barlog's outburst, SCEA reps would comment on neither a rumble-enabled Sixaxis nor God of War III coming to the PS3. Now, less than two months after the Dual Shock 3 was unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, Sony has officially confirmed that God of War III is indeed in development exclusively for the PS3 at SCEA's Santa Monica studio. It provided no further details on the game.

Unfortunately, the God of War III announcement was tempered by some bittersweet news. SCEA has confirmed Barlog himself no longer works at the company's Santa Monica studio. "We are grateful for his work and creative vision for the critically acclaimed God of War franchise," the company said in a brief statement in which it expressed faith in the remaining members of the GOWIII and God of War: Chains of Olympus teams.

Barlog's departure remains shrouded in mystery. So far, he has shared no information about his future plans on his personal blog, where he last posted in mid-October. His exit comes just under four months after God of War series creative director, David Jaffe announced he was leaving SCEA's employ after 14 years. Jaffe maintains close ties with Sony, and his indie studio Eat Sleep Play's first project is a PS2 port of the PSP game Twisted Metal: Head On.
Great news for the millions of God of War fans. I'm sure a suitable replacement will be found for Barlog, much like there was for David Jaffe.

It was obvious that it would come eventually, but it's nice to have confirmation that it's sooner rathre than later.

I wonder what technicality detractors will come up with to say god of war 3 isn't a must have.

By the time it comes out it just might be the thing that makes millions of current ps2 owners decide that it's time to upgrade finaly.

I just wish it was coming sooner. While no official release date was given, most are speculating it won't be out until 2009.....

PS3 receives another system seller. This title can't arrive soon enough!

I'll be curious to see what Sony sets as the target release date for God of War 3. If it's 2008, then we'll know that Sony have been working on it for quite some time. If it's 2009+, then it will have been after Jaffe left SCEA.

I borrowed GoW2 from a friend. You'd think they would have done a PS3 version in parallel and simply amped up the graphics for the PS3 version. I would have bought that... I didn't buy GoW2.

I've never really played them. I have God of War I and II sitting here though. I played the first one for about three minutes on my PS3.

I might play them someday.

I'd probably buy God of War III.

Second one is even better. Its a lot longer, and has a very deep story with lots of characters from old mythology. The bosses dont quite feel as "epic" though, but there are more of them.

GoW is by far my favorite franchise. GoW3 will be a massive system seller. Cant get here soon enough.

GoW is the only PS2 game I ever played and I played it on my PS3. It was a really, really good game and I will definetly pick up GoW III.

Yesterday he also posted an entry about the departure of Cory Barlog from the God of War team. His take? It's a good move for Cory and he thinks God of War 3 "promises to be the best game in the series." Read more over at Jaffe's blog[link].
And before you ask, here's the related entry from David Jaffe's blog:

Finished the game pitch with Phil Harrison up here in Foster City and now I'm sitting around SFO waiting for my plane to board (about 2 hours from now). It's not so bad really, nice break from the last few days of rush, rush, rush. It's very quiet right now...a whole heard of people just got on a plane at the gate next to me...so I'm just sitting here on the floor, cup of coffee in one hand, surfing the net with the other....check it[pic]

Ahhh, Kotaku! My sweet, sweet Kotaku. Never lets me down with the goods...[pic]

MMmmmm, Burger King! Well...not really. I used to LOVE the BK fries and then they changed them about 12 years ago or so and they just suck so much now. BK sucks...

Anyway...so that's SFO airport at about 1:55pm on Thursday Nov 8th. Or at least a little corner of it. My little corner....I feel like Tom Hanks in The Terminal...

So as for the pitch: I got the sense the powers that be dug what we were pitching, enough to let us keep moving ahead and exploring the vision. So that's always good. Plus, pitching is always fun for me and since I loved what I was pitching, it was even more fun! It's odd...the pitch was a big meeting room with Phil and then a bunch of Sony folks (all of whom I know, like alot, and have worked with for years)...but this time I was on the other side of the table, this time when we were done pitching, instead of getting to stay in the room and hear about the other games Sony internal was making, we (me and Scott) were asked to leave because we're not allowed to know about the unannounced titles from Sony 1st party anymore... For a moment it was a little strange because for 13 years I'd been privy to those sorts of meetings, to that kind of info...so yeah, for a second I didn't like that feeling. And then it passed.

And then I was like: OH MY GOD! I REALLY AM AN INDY DEVELOPER NOW!!! And you know what? I ****ing LOVE it! LOVE IT! I LOVED 95% of my years at Sony, no doubt. No regrets...nothin' but love for you baby/Sony....but now, now THIS feels right...I am so greatful for this opportunity...and I love I still get to be doing it with Sony. So win/win, *****es!

So all and all...a good day! Now I'm just really fried, ready to get home. Taking the day off tomorrow to go to LA with my wife. We get to get Indian food from GATE OF INDIA!!! Man, that food there....it's like gold if gold were food...and if you could eat gold food....so it's like gold food meaning it tastes so great and we love it....**** off! I am tired!!!

Ok ya'll...that's all she wrote for now...chat soon!

David

ps. just got an email from Drew, one of the producers on the TM:HEAD ON port. He's at a focus group for the new, TM BLACK levels down in LA. He says we're getting 8's, 9's, and 10 out of 10 ratings for FUN FACTOR (the only rating I ever care about)!!! Man, that is sweet! I have no clue how many people buy ports and who is still buying PS2 games (I hope alot!) but man I think we've all done great work on this title. Head On looks great, the Lost Levels- if I may say so- are really fun, and I love all the bonus content. I hope people give us a chance! But either way, I'm feeling really really proud of the game the team has made right now. Great news from focus groups are always a nice way to cap off a day

Awesome. I haven't been buying PS3 games lately. This and Devil May Cry 4 are definitely going to be must buys though!

This is old news. The interview was before the launch of GOW2. Good luck on getting anything before April 2009
