How to Train Your Dragon
year: 2010 director: dead deblois and chris sanders starring: (voice work of course) jay baruchel, gerard butler, craig ferguson, america ferrera, jonah hill, and christoher mintz-plasse first things first: isn't it odd to see see three people doing voice work who are known for raunchy comedies all in the same film? (baruchel, hill and plasse) but i guess it's the norm for raunchy comedy stars to do voicework for children's movies (a la denis leary in the Ice Age films), but it still seems oddly funny to me how that works out ![]() anyway, great film. i mean GREAT film! ![]() i will have to rewatch this tomorrow because i was super tired and the gf had the volume too damn low for dialogue to be heard super well, but let's face it: an animated movie can only go in so many directions. so it's not like i missed much in terms of dialogue. you could have this on mute and figure it out. some may see that as "cheap" but i think it's great story telling since some kids won't be paying attention to the dialogue. and how could they! ![]() looks at those visuals! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OUTSTANDING! ![]() i was actually surprised - story wise - that the film's characters [Show spoiler] . i didn't know that. i thought that the film was about [Show spoiler] , not that the vikings [Show spoiler] and that hiccup [Show spoiler] . so that was neat to discover.i really only have two small issues with the film that honestly, aren't issues at all: 1) the very generic story. now, by this i don't mean that the movie is generic for dragons or anything like that, i mean "main character isn't like everyone else, forms unlikely bond with something he doesn't understand and has been taught to act different with, they bond. keep this a secret because everyone will disagree. something bad happens. moments of sadness. moments of triumph. happy ending". again, not that it matters, but for as far as Dreamworks has come, this is still a pretty basic story outline that has been done to death by Pixar, Disney and Dreamworks hundreds of times before. of course, this is the first film and a sequel could definitely do something new. 2) i don't know how much of the voice work may have done this, but baruchel definitely was bad in one aspect: his voice never changed to fit what was happening. yes, he yelled, was sad, blah blah blah. but what i mean is, at times when he should have been hard to hear, tired, winded or frightened, he never sounded that way. he always sounded like he was just standing in a room recording and reading lines off the page. there is a great special feature on Up that shows the kid who did the voice work for Russell. in the feature, in one of the scenes, Russell is winded. so the directors have the kid run around the studio for 20 seconds or so and then quick say the lines. is it perfect? no, of course not. does it fit the scene and fit in? absolutely. again, nothing major, but it definitely kind of took me out of the world a bit to hear someone perfectly clear and normal when they're [Show spoiler] when it sounds like they're sitting in a board room meeting.on to the large amount of good stuff (no order) ![]() + the atmosphere! ![]() ![]() + lots of touching, heart warming moments. + very entertaining with a high dose of replay value. + the very best part of the film? TOOTHLESS! BY FAR! ![]() ![]() ![]() what an absolutely wonderful character. he easily becomes one of my favorite animated characters ever created. it's hard to explain why, but he's just so awesome. he's cute, cuddly, friendly, shy and goofy, and then very quickly fierce, predatory, tough, strong and frightening. the first major scene between him and hiccup was adorable and awesome ![]() ![]() ![]() definitely a must own imo, and definitely will be one i plan on buying soon and will watch numerous times for years to come. in a lot of ways it's not the best made film, but it's an absolutely dynamite film. funny, action packed, full of adventure, a bright, colorful, vibrant world and one of the best new characters around, what's not to love? ![]() but when it comes to "Animated Film of the Year" Toy Story 3 still takes the cake. quite easily too. but that's not a knock at all on HTTYD. ![]() ![]() At the worst, I expect "Inception" to be like "Avatar." Even if I'm dissapointed with the story for whatever reason, the entertainment and cinematic quality look phenomenal. And if it's anything like "The Matrix," I'll probably love it for sure (at least aesthetically). At least I hope. I've been avoiding the hype; aside from a few commercials and a few reviews, I hardly know a darn thing about this movie. Hype can kill a good movie by blowing up expectations unreasonably and killing objectivity; look at what it did to everyone's opinion about "Avatar," the "Matrix" sequels, and any number of other movies. Lots of mixed opinions all around. ![]() So if anything, I should thank you guys for continuing to subdue my expectations and the hype. ![]() Agh, December can't get here fast enough! ![]() |

The Pursuit of Happyness - 4/5
Great story, good film. Will Smith was very good, at times excellent, but the thing that bugged me was that most of the time his performance was basically Will Smith as Chris Gardner. I lost count of the times that his on screen speech was Will's normal way of speaking, instead of trying to speak like a man from 1981. There were even a few times that he used expressions that became popular well after the story's time frame. Either way, Will was very good and his son Jaden was great as well. Nothin too special, but it's a solid film nonetheless. Overall I enjoyed it a lot and I definitely recommend it. |

Toy Story 3
A film some might consider the Schindler's List of the Animation genre! I can't really disagree, it is a great film ![]() It's sharply written with a ton of comedy, it's emotionally welling as well. With a really great innovative story, which is impressive considering it's the 3rd film in the franchise and it's been going for 15 year (I think?). Yet I still can't put my finger on something, something that holds it back in my mind, something that puts it below the bar of the previous Pixar movies. And it really bugs me, everyone loves a film, and there's a thing that keeps you from loving it as much as everyone else, yet you don't know what. ![]() ![]() ![]() Still, a great buy ![]() 9.5/10 PQ - 10/10 AQ - 10/10 |
