Open casting calls for Super 8?

Source:Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
It's no secret that J.J. Abrams is directing "Super 8," his Steven Spielberg-produced Amblin-style thriller that will open next summer.

But it's fun to see Abrams and Paramount, the home of his Bad Robot shingle, try to keep a lid on the proceedings as much as possible.

Friday night, Paramount announced an open casting call for an "untitled" "major motion picture." "Seeking real 13-14 year old boys and girls for the lead roles in a new Paramount feature film," said the studio on its casting site and in a press release.

"No previous acting experience is necessary, but must have a great energy and a wonderful sense of humor," continued the announcement. Then the requirements:

Quote:
FEMALE 13-14 – AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING NATURAL BEAUTY, STRONG AND CONFIDENT WITH A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. SHOULD HAVE A MIDWESTERN FEEL.

MALE 13-14 – VERY HANDSOME AND/OR STRIKING. MUST HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. SHOULD HAVE A MIDWESTERN FEEL. MUST BE 5’6” TO 5’11”
This'll be a cinch, right Mr. Abrams? The casting session is being held on the Paramount lot Saturday from 10 to 4.

It's not hard to follow the crumbs to "Super 8." It's really the only movie the studio needs to make at this time in order to make next year's slate. "Transformers 3" is already shooting, "Footloose" has its major players lined up and wouldn't need an audition like this, and "Mission: Impossible 4" is going to be looking for adults.

And there are not that many movies at Paramount that are looking for kid actors in that range. From what is known about "Super 8," that particular project certainly is: set in the Midwest in the late 1970s, the story follows some teens who come across a creature from parts unknown.

The title that's being bandied about at the studio and among agencies for a movie being made for next summer is "Darlings." Abrams is producing a remake of "Little Darlings," the 1980 movie about two girls racing to lose their virginity at summer camp, but that project doesn't even have a director on it and "Darlings" is generally acknowledged to be a code term for the thriller.

Another sign: Abrams has signaled he wants fresh faces in "Super 8" to give it as naturalistic feel as possible, hoping to find kids who are as free of celebrity baggage as possible in order not to take audiences out of the movie. In other words, if you're on the Disney Channel, go to the back of the line.

Yet another sign: days ago, word began leaking that "Super 8" would shoot in late September in West Virginia. Calls to the West Virginia Film Office, meanwhile, refer all inquiries regarding "Darlings," as the office called it, to Paramount in Hollywood.

To those auditioning, good luck. To those trying to keep it a secret (and you know who you are), good luck.

There was a time when Friday Night Lights leading man Kyle Chandler seemed poised to star in Steven Spielberg’s ambitious time travel drama Terra Nova. But he passed. So it goes. In light of recent news, there are clearly no hard feelings.

Vulture reports that Chandler and Elle Fanning are the first members to join the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, produced by Mr. Spielberg. Details are tightly under wraps, though it’s rumored to center on “three siblings who discover footage of an alien in some Super 8 footage they shot.” We really don’t know much more than that, but there is always room for speculation after the jump.

Paramount held an open casting call over the summer for young actors — a girl and two boys. It was never confirmed, but the web consensus was “This is for Super 8.” With Fanning on board, here’s the (hypothetically) relevant character description for Natalie:
NATALIE: Female 13-14. A natural beauty – she is stunning, but not the “cheerleader” type. Strong and confident, but has an underlying sadness. Should have a Midwestern feel.
-
Fanning should be nearly thirteen by filming, and I buy her as a Midwestern non-cheerleader beauty, I suppose. And if she was a carefree tween before, her time on the set of Sofia Coppola’s navelgazing Somewhere certainly could have bred an underlying sadness. But I don’t want to delve too deeply into the vague description, in part because I don’t really believe it’s for Super 8. I think it’s for Paramount’s adaptation of this.
I like Fanning well enough. But Chandler is on the list of actors I hope have a steady stream of work forever and ever. I don’t know how large his role will be in an ostensibly kid-centric movie, but he’s in good hands. Prior to today, Super 8 registered a ten on my anticipation scale. Now it’s a 10.5.

7 days after my birthday, damn

It'll be strange to see how this film fares off next to Fast and Furious 5, a well known franchise against a mysterious newcomer. FF 5 has more star power and audiences know exactly what they are going to get, while Super 8 has Spielberg and Abrams and has that Cloverfield type hype behind it which audiences may/may not be sick off

Why do aliens have to be portraied as a multitentacular monster which looks unbelievably clumsy while it manage to build spaceships which must be very intricate in both design and technology?Do the engineers at their homeplanet build them, and populate them with clumsy monsters as a practical joke?

Or, why do the spaceships have to be so intricate? Why can't they be made out of egg shells with cardboard, and little buttons, made out of ... buttons?

It says "approval pending", "concept" and dated "6-15-10", so they might have changed it since then....if that's even a real picture.

Maybe a more sophisticated species designs and builds the ships and sends those critters out as test pilots. Similar to how we sent out monkeys on early missions.

Default Super 8 - Plot Theories/General Discusion

Heres the trailer for those who havent seen it. One of the more convincing theories I've read is:

Quote:
This movie is about a scientific research gone wrong. 8 college students sign up for experimental research. The research changes there DNA allowing them to accumulate powers like mind control, strength, pyrokenisis, telepathic abilities and so on. The military finds out about the experimental program and pays a large sum of money to the scientist for the rights to continue the research and weaponize them. The scientist had stopped the research because they knew what it could be used for. But money corrupted them. The only way to contain the students who's powers were still increasing from the experiments was to cool there bodies to a point low enough to keep them alive but to stop brain function. They sent them by train because it would be a fast way of travel while insuring that they would be contained. Unfortunately something went wrong with the train and it crashed. The freezer they were in stopped functioning allowing them to escape...They hide out and attempt to learn how to control there powers. What they don't yet know is that the military has created super soldiers from the same research they purchased. There mission is to hunt down the college students codenamed as "Super 8" and kill them before the experiment goes public.
The quote is from fxsaberboy, who claims his father is a set designer on the movie.
The only problems I see with that is in the trailer its made out to be a singular entity, like the hidden message 'scariest thing I ever saw' or when the trailer says 'IT arrives.' But it does make for a good theory.
What do you guys think?

That would suck if that's what Super 8 is about as I'm anticipating an alien/creature movie as the trailer suggests. Not that it's a bad plot just not what I want Super 8 to be about.

Same here I just liked how convincing and well thought out it sounded, why would someone plot all that out just to randomly post it where not many people would see it :/

I liked this trailer breakdown. Shows the boys face at the end along with the hidden message. Whatever the case. I can not wait.
