Possible idea/thought: they want to change the way the RemotePlay streams so it's possible to stream over broadband internet to your PSP through any hotspot. They also said they wanted you to be able to play movies that are in your home unit when away. A version on the bd meant for the PSP's resolution would be a very evident step in that direction.

Therefore : Spiderman 3 will be a title to implement this!
It has already been dubbed the PSP2.

There are designs do use a new process to make B/V diodes which don't require a sapphire substrate, instead using the much more common silicon to lower costs and eventually size and power consumption. The wonders of being a chemistry student eh .

Sony have already stated that they want to port franchises from the PS2/3 to the PSP, so when games are all using BD25 and are have long completion times, porting it to a PSP using UMD is going to be much harder than onto a MiniBD16.5. I think it would make sense for Sony to do this as it would promote BD more, and it would get it into the public eye as the PSP is mightily successful.

Who knows, by the time PSP2 is released BD may already have won.

The oddity is that the PSP is actually more powerful than the PS2 currently. The power consumption on the unit needs to go down, as it is, having the disc mechanism in the first place is what's destroying the system's battery life.

It'd upset me myself to see a PSP2 released in the next 2 years, but I was an early adopter of the PSP. Even after 2 years, we're looking at a 3 year lifespan, which wrecks of just system failure [in my opinion of course].

Even more so, if the migration goes away from UMD, because it'll forfeit one of the Playstation franchise's biggest selling points, backwards compatibility [going to a slot loader MiniBD, now, say, a MiniBD with a tray case ala really freaking old CD-roms, hmm].

Anyway, it feels rumor-mill still, and at the very least, long term, now the next TGS may well prove me wrong .

I think that if it does get released it won't be until late 2009/early 2010, as right now the PSP fanbase is getting very big and it would be silly to announce a newer version just as this is beginning to happen. Don't forget that Nintendo release hand-held consoles every 3-4 years as well.

I think that they could keep backwards compatibility, as they would emulate old UMD games on the new one, proof of purchase (i.e. the game itslef) entitles you to a game download code (obtain this by going to your local gaming shop with the game or something), use the code and move the game to permanent flash on PSP2, is just one solution to this. I am sure Sony could think of more elegant ones.

The reason Nintendo keep sticking with cartridges is to increase battery life, but by 2009/2010 there will probably be some new battery tech that will keep the PSP2 going for a while. But using a smaller, lower power B/V laser diode would definitely help the power consumption.
