Once you own it, it is yours to take in the backyard and trash it with a hammer if you wish. Returns for the sake of keeping a freebie is wrong. Now, if you sincerely wanted to keep both but decided the returnable item sucked and returned it, then your conscience is clear if they tell you to keep the freebie.
