I'm a big History Channel/National Geographic/Science Channel/Discovery Channel nerd for shows that they play like that and on space and other things.
My review kinda sucks. Its really really really interesting. There are SO many holes out there that its amazing there hasnt been an episode already. We have apprehended criminals in possesion (with intent to sell) of HEU on ACCIDENT (there for other reasons) on multiple occasions.

Check it out.

Yep. Would also add:
  • Rapid-fire editing, maybe some shakey-cam.
  • Super-sunny super-colorful shots worthy of a postcard.
Who says any of these are bad things?!

[Show spoiler]Does anyone else find it amusing that when Cypher betrayed Morpheus and his crew, they implied that he would be re-inserted into the Matrix as President Ronald Reagan? I know he didn't live to do it but still amusing.

[Show spoiler]I remember he said "I wanna be somebody important...like an actor," but I never realized he meant Reagan specifically. I suppose that does make sense. Otherwise, I figure it was an inside joke, having the character acknowledge that he is merely an actor...

[Show spoiler]Well he was talking about wanting to be a politician or an actor I believe and the agent said something like whatever you want, Mr. Reagan.
There is no way they were that specific without meaning who I thought they did.

It's hard to argue with Cypher though.
[Show spoiler]Would you rather spend your life in an endless struggle against machines, knowing you could be killed at any moment or live a fantasy where you could pretty much do whatever you wanted, in exchange for a "small" boon.

[Show spoiler]First and foremost, this film is gorgeous! The action scenes are freakin’ huge! The ‘splosions are freakin’ everywhere! Cars are flying all over the place! Bullets crawling through the air and spraying blood and stuff! My God, on a visual level, this could be one of the coolest looking films ever!

As for the story…yeah, it’s okay. Didn’t really connect with my fully (much less the characters) and it felt really long, but it is loaded with scenes that are funny, dramatic, and just plain awesome. The comedy didn’t really make me laugh that much, but otherwise it’s a pretty fun ride.

Like any Michael Bay film, this movie is a mixed bag of good and bad photography. All of it looks great, especially with all the sunbathed locales and a super-sleek production value. Action scenes do get a little jittery; frankly though I think I’ve seen way worse (I think “The Island” is more hectic than this). Acting is fine and dandy (maybe a little over-the-top for some characters), and the writing seems okay. Music is really cool.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 4/5)

Just might have to nab the Blu-Ray for this (and blind-buy the first one, why not?)!

Man please blind buy part one. The story is actually better in part one also. Both are great films though. Got Em!!

3:10 To Yuma - 2007

First off, excellent PQ. One of the better transfers I've seen.

I'm not big on westerns, but there are some out there that I have enjoyed, so I gave this one a try.

I really enjoyed the storyline, the pace of the film, and the acting. I tend to get bored with some westerns, but this one kept me entertained throughout the whole film, especially the last 20 minutes.

All in all, a pretty darn good movie.

7/10

Like I said earlier tonight, someone on the site recommended it to me so I checked it out. And I can say I am very glad I did.

I knew the basic premise (guys in a jury trying to decide on a verdict) but I didn't know what to expect out of that.

I loved the way the story was told. It wasn't just the other jurors who needed to be convinced, it was the viewer, and that's how the movie went about it. A detail here, one there, eventually forming a larger and larger understanding of what LIKELY happened that night (Fonda's character makes dead certain to not say something did or didn't happen, only that its possible). It was a rather short movie (just over an hour and a half) so the pace moved pretty briskly, but it didn't feel rushed; it covered the ground it needed to cover and never overstayed its welcome.

The characters and the performances were all very strong. Each representing a very different man with no two too much alike. The most typical answer is probably that Fonda's character is a given person's favorite, and for this movie I'm going to agree with the most likely typical answer. He did a great job, I thought the best of the bunch, with his character and his character was also the most interesting for me. It's also worth noting that his character is dressed in a white suit.

My least favorite character was Juror #10, though that's only because I didn't like him...but he's not supposed to be a likable character; so its not that the character fails, on the contrary, it very much succeeds. One of the most "powerful" moments in the film is when
[Show spoiler]he is having his rant about "those" people and the other characters just each get up one at a time and walk away from the table with the exception of Juror #4 and Juror #7 (who turns away). The dead, awkward silence besides him speaking was just very unnerving and the actor played it very well reacting to it. It's also a nice touch that after Juror #4 tells him to not open his mouth again...he doesn't.

I really enjoyed the camera work of the film as well. I liked how it went on the shots were tighter and lower in relation to the actors, increasing the sense of close space and making the movie more claustrophobic if you will as things began to "ramp up" as it proceeded.

There wasn't a thing in the film that I didn't enjoy, it definitely fired on all cylinders and worked across the board. A fantastic film, and for anyone who hasn't seen it, I definitely recommend checking it out (don't want to rent it? It's on Youtube in very good quality, that's how I watched it).

Rating - 4.75/5
In my Top 5! Great review.

As one sees more films, their tastes change and therefore new favorites are cemented. IIRC, he just saw Paths of Glory recently and even though he's not a huge fan of 2001, he still respects it. Maybe after PoG, Kubrick just jumped up to the top

As for Bale, I can understand people's dislike, but he's undeniably a very good actor.
Yes i do. I thought Kubrick was a genius in that movie. So ahead of its time. I didnt feel the story but i thought the movie was EYE CANDY

Thanks for paying attention Tbizzle!

So much so that I don’t think there was any way it could ever disappoint. The choice has been made, now I have to understand why (oh wait, that line’s from some other movie…).

Next greatest blind-buy: “Inception.”

As it is with a lot of films I rank highly, “Inception” is a movie that effectively merges high entertainment value with good storytelling in the confines of a quality film production. Some of the best films manage all three elements while maintaining some level of emotional or intellectual impact. With so much talent pooled into this film (Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ellen Page, all under the supervision of the one and only Christopher Nolan, a man I’m starting to regard as Hitchcock of the 21st century) and hype, I had a feeling that “Inception” might just breach the upper echelon of cherished and beloved personal favorites. Could “Inception” outclass Nolan’s own successes, like “The Dark Knight” or “Memento?” Could it entertain any more than a century’s worth of thrilling action movies, imaginative sci-fi, or invoking psychological thrillers? Could it even penetrate my personal top 10 list that has grown so solid and firmly rooted in my consciousness?!

“Inception” definitely has the entertainment value. The action scenes are short, but sporadic and intense, and practically run through the entire course of the movie. Combined with fantastic special effects (many of which are incredibly imaginative on an MC Escher level) and a whole lot of brilliant photography, the film practically makes an art out of the action, especially since most of the action is always a consequence of the story and there’s hardly anything frivolous about any of it. I almost wish there could be more of the incredible SFX and gunfighting, but what we get is a good amount as it is.

Thankfully, most of the focus remains on the story, which is very heavily structured and thick. The use of flashbacks establishes a unique framework for a story that continuously frames itself; like the mirrored shots the film itself uses, where characters see repetitions of themselves over and over again, so too does the film layer itself. Not only with physical (or rather, subconscious) layers of reality, but also with conflicts (physical and internal). At the core, the story ultimately revolves around the main character and unlocking his secrets. This is maybe not as insightful or deep of a character study as “The Dark Knight” was with the Joker, but it is fairly insightful in its own way. Minor characters receive adequate treatment, but never so much
[Show spoiler]that one doesn’t wonder whether or not the entire movie is “real” in the first place, as the final shot may indicate…

I must also give the story a huge amount of credit for effectively constructing its own universe in which to operate. It has its own archetypes of characters (there’s an architect, there’s a chemist, there’s a shade, etc). It has its own devices, gizmos, etc. It has its own rules and boundaries. At the same time, it has a style and class all on its own (and combined with all the corporate stuff, it kinda felt like a PKD story, which is awesome).

The film is superbly crafted, with a huge abundance of pleasing visuals and quality cameramanship. Editing style and techniques are as effective as Nolan’s previous work, and works well in the story’s favor. The acting seems quite good. Production value is very high, featuring a plethora of fantastic set-pieces and locations, populated with quality props, costumes, vehicles, weapons, and the works. Music is interesting (may have to get the soundtrack).

But what does it all mean? On the surface, “Inception” provides a lot of intriguing ideas and a few interesting (albeit not wholly unexpected) twists to the story and characters. But one thing stuck out at me;
[Show spoiler] as Mal kept insisting that our world is not real, I was reminded of some brief research I had done on other cultures, religions, etc. A lot of this went way over my head, but there are some beliefs that our reality is indeed not real. Or else it is a manifested creation from God, emanating throughout different layers of reality. The movie practically shows this as Cobb and Mal created their own worlds once; perhaps the journey into the deeper dreamscapes is a journey through the different levels of Godly creation. And the fact that Cobb is searching for a way “home” could further support the idea that this is some kind of metaphysical trip; perhaps even a figurative ascension into heaven. For that matter, could he be dead this whole time? Could he still be dreaming? Is it somebody else’s dream? Am I just making all this up in some desperate hope to extrapolate deeper meaning in a film that doesn’t really have any? I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO THINK!

As such, I see little reason to give this film a low score. It has satisfied me on all levels. It is most certainly eligible to become a part of my top 100 list. As for the top 10…time will tell…

4.5/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5, intellectual impact: 4.5/5)

The Blu-Ray for this looks and sounds darn near perfect!

PQ: 5/5, AQ: 5/5
WOW!! Great review. You just made me wanna watch it again for those deep themes you mentioned about "God and his creations" I never looked at it like that. Deep bro. But i will like to mention that Nolan came out to tell everyone to stop aruging about the ambiguous ending. I believe DONT READ THIS SERIOUSLY IF YOU'RE GOONNA WATCH THE MOVIE.
[Show spoiler]He isn't dreaming. Limbo is the lowest, you cant go any lower so the only way out is back to reality.
