I have several mkv files with chapters that I want to playback on my main TV. Does anyone know of player / media server combination that would preserve this function.
I have a PS3 80gig version, and I can play the files, but with ps3mediaserver, I cant use chapter advance. Ive tried several media servers. Most of the mkv files are created using handbrake, but some have been using makemkv. I know the chapters work on the PC. Any ideas? |

I have actually looked into that, but as near as I can tell, the new file does not contain the chapter information. In essence, that is what ps3mediaserver is doing, but it does it on the fly.
Am I missing something, I only found information about using mkv2vob, but very little about its playback. I am willing to buy a new player for this, I was going to be looking for one in the near future anyway. |

These videos are homemade videos of vacations, my cousins band, and a few other items. The chapter breaks are for different locations or events (thanksgiving, christmas, , but can be viewed completely in order, as on a DVD.
My other option is to encode the file entire video to a compatible format and then cut it out to the individual scenes and label them accordingly, but that could be a lengthy process. As I mentioned, I am not stuck on doing this on a PS3, I understand that quite a few blu-ray players support .mkv now. I am curious to see if any of them support chapters over a network or even just via USB. |

The Samsung BD-C8000 can play MKVs and many other files off of a hard drive, flash drive, CD, or DVD. It is portable and can plug in to HD and SD TVs and is 3D capable. It is what I want from Santa this year.... "come on mom and pop" (lol). I have been researching it heavily and get this impression from Amazon reviews and the manual.

Be careful when considering a Bluray player to playback file types.
Just because it says it can play mkv, does not mean it will play all mkv's. Many Bluray players (from reading) only allow certain resolutions or audio formats. (you have to read the fine print, and sometimes its hard to find exact specifications) Consider a media streamer such as Western Digital WDTV Live. there are many other media players out there, but this will get the job done. |

Ive read previously of only accepting a 720p mkv...not sure if that's changed or whether it only applied to one particular model? Its so hard finding exact info. edit: Ive found this, which may help shed some light? http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/learningresources/media2.0/usb_faq.html Last edited by crackinhedz; 12-13-2010 at 01:19 AM. |

So I gather that there isn't any reliable blu-ray player that supports all types of mkv files? A little disappointing...how good or bad is the compatibility of the new WDTV Live? If you had some experience with it. |

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping to make an all in one purchase for a Blu-ray player but from reading about it the support seems poor in general. For some reason I assumed that top of the line players like Oppo would do a good job.
Anyone know anything about the new Oppo player when it comes to MKV? Thanks. |
