I know what you mean though. Glad you gave it a shot.

One of these days, I might have to give "Species" another try...
I liked Species better than Splice. Natasha is one fine alien lol. Got Em!!

Ride with the Devil

Blu-ray

Criterion Collection 1999 149 min

This film felt like a made for TV movie. Big time.

I was immediately taken out by the dialogue. It was far too deliberate in an effort to sound eloquent. Where Deadwood succeeds in its raw poetry, this missed by a mile.

I found the story meandered too much and felt disjointed in its connection of the events of the era. It also underemphasized some of the really important events, like the Lawrence Masacre in Kansas, and failed to explain the preceeding events that led to the Raid.

The whole thing just plugged along and felt uninspired. What could have been epic felt very mediocre.

Nice camera work for the most part.

The costume and hair department tried way too hard IMO, with over the top pajama-esque confederate clothing with "look at me" bright colors and loud patterns. I know hairstyles and facial hairstyles were unique to the era, but I had to at some of the flowing manes and goatees.

A moderately Ok movie in terms of entertainment. Just didnt capture the intensity of the US Civil War.

Film 3/5
PQ 4/5
AQ 4/5

This movie is so bad, I bought it. Yep. There are so many glaring continuity errors that it makes it a blast to watch with friends and point them out and keep a running tally.

His shirt is tucked in, now its out, now its in, now its out.

Emerge from the chamber filling with water after being neck deep, walk 10 feet, turn a corner, Presto! We are 100% dry as a bone.

Its Shia driving the motorcycle, no its a stuntman, Shai, Stuntman, Shia, Stuntman.
[Show spoiler]Which time, the first, second or third?

My favorite is sinking in the mud pit thingy and then coming out with his khaki pants nice and shiny clean

You should take a look at the IMDB page for goofs...there's probably even more than you can notice

I am constantly confused by rating systems on this forum-- if a 3.5 rating out of 5 is mediocre then I assume
4.0 is good, 4.5 is very good and 5.0 is great?

if that's the case
1.0 and 1.5 would be bad, what then merits 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0????

I think it varies from person to person.

I can't speak for anybody else, but for my rating scheme (based on the Amazon/Netflix/LoveFilm/Blu-Ray.com scales) would be...

5/5: Super-duper spectacular mind-blowing awesomeness!!!
4.5/5: Neeeaaarrrrlllyyyy perfect....
4/5: Good stuff, love it
3.5/5: Above-average, enjoyable, like-it-but-don't-love-it
3/5: Average, medicre, whatever...
2.5/5: Something's wrong here...
2/5: Pretty bad stuff. Yep...
1.5/5: Urge to kill rising...
1/5: Feelings of hatred, loathing, and disdain overwhelm the common senses...
0.5/5: The absolute bottom of a cinematic singularity, where no light can escape...

that's really close to mine as well, which means 3 stars for you pretty much means good, not mediocre. It seems like most people associate 3 stars with a mediocre movie.

My rating system is the same but I cheat a little bit and add a ** 1/2 rating for movies that are "better than mediocre, but not quite a good movie"

I need to see more Ang Lee films. I've only seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hulk. And Crouching Tiger is in my Top 50 of all time. I'm looking at Brokeback Mountain, Sense and Sensibility, and The Ice Storm...

That's similar to mine, although I define "average" in two ways. My "average" score among all my scores is probably a 3.5 because I manage to stay away from most of the 1's. Average overall though (a "meh" score) is probably closer to a 3 as you put it. Here is an explanation I gave a few days ago: https://forum.blu-ray.com/movies/127...ml#post4121247

5/5 - Absolutely love the movie

4.75/5 - Very, very close to "perfect", but not quite there

4.5/5 - Very strong movie; lower limit of being able to say "I love it"

4.25/5 - Really enjoy, but don't quite love

4/5 - Good stuff (stole that one from Al)

3.75/5 - Enjoyed it...but not very much.

3.5/5 - Above average

3.25/5 - Never been used...I think

3/5 - Average; It isn't downright bad, but it isn't that good either

2.75/5 - I marginally like it for [insert reason(s)], but it isn't good. Only example is The Phantom Menace

2.5/5 - The first level of bad; Has some good qualities

2.25/5 - Never been used

2/5 - Pretty bad; several good qualities or one very good quality

1.75/5 - Never been used

1.5/5 - Very bad

1.25/5 - Never been used

1/5 - Atrocious; no more than one good quality

.75/5 - No redeeming qualities, at this point, its just a matter of how much the stuff that sucks actually sucks.

.5/5 - Loathe

.25/5 - Never been used

0/5 - Complete and utter crap

/5 - Miss March. No other film that I have seen has approached this truly remarkable level of suck.
