I don't think anyone is losing sleep over it, but it definitely makes me a little bit disappointed every time I see it...

"DUD" and all it's variations should stop if only because it's a tired term and lacks any sort of wit at all -- it's like a child saying "You know what? Chicken BUTT!" and laughing hysterically thinking they found the pinnacle of hilarity. You know that joke that just gets old, to the point where it starts to get irritating? That's what this is.

Every forum has old jokes, it happens when a group of people get together and have fun... but the best thing to do is to retire them when they get old and come up with new ones.

mystiksuicide -- YOU may certainly do whatever you want.

To the overall point, though, for some reason calling the other format DUD has always bugged me. That said, I frequently call the other forum (from which I came) AVM$, so I don't claim to be guilt-free on this either. I also am all for freedom of speech, and don't want to tell other people what to do... but this is my take.

Calling the other format HD DUD is nothing more than a childish slam. It seems more than a little silly to be name-calling a competing round silver disc. Now, certainly fans of the other format often behave the same way, but that's nothing more than an excuse for us to act childishly ourselves.

Every day, new people come by this forum looking for information. Many are potential consumers trying to decide which format to buy. Others already own an HD DVD player but see the writing on the wall and are either considering getting a Blu-ray player or already have. I think that many of those new visitors see the way we behave and are turned off from digging deeper into the site... or possibly from going Blu-ray altogether. That certainly sholdn't be the goal of any of us.

And with sales continuing to increase, and awareness and interest in the format skyrocketing, I think we should do a better job of maintaining a certain level of professionalism here. This really is more than just a "fansite," as many have claimed. It is the primary resource for Blu-ray on the internet. Neither www.Blu-raydisc.com or www.hollywoodinhighdef.com likely gets anywhere near as many hits as this site does.

The mods here do a very good job of trying to keep most of the forums clean by moving much of the DUD-type dialog to the off-topic forum, but it would be nice if everyone did their part to keep the main discussions a bit more professional, and either start a new space for "format bashing" or keep it relegated to the existing off-topic forum.

I'm all for freedom of speech, and I think anyone should be able to say what they want -- but keeping all things in there appropriate place would go a long way to making this a more appealing forum for the massive influx of new members the site could potentially be getting as this "format war" winds to a close.

Anyway... just my $02.

No, Blu-Ray.com forum members' calling HD-DVD a DUD on Blu-ray.com's website is not trolling. Trolling, for example, is when HD-DVD fanatics come to Blu-Ray.com just to fight and spread FUD - i.e., with no intention of honest debate.

Well you may call me childish if you like but it isn't going to make a damn difference in what I say. Perhaps it's rooted in the way some of those as--- of acted in here. For the time being and until I get it out of my system I will call them duder's

Those are my 2 cents!

You may not think it's funny while others do... Honestly, I think it's hiliarious. It's not a big deal, it's all just fun.

When you say others don't like this forum? Who the !?@# are you talking about? Blu-ray forum has the friendliest people I've ever seen on-line. You can say what you want (as long as you're not trolling), there's a diversity of people here, people can be themselves without feeling judged... I've been around HD-DVD forums and they're a bunch of assh*les.

I think all of us has a little immature in us even when we're adults.

I have never used the "dud" term before (that I recall), but this thread has inspired me to start.

I think telling people how they should act in a forum is a far FAR bigger annoyance than people using a derisive term for a format they don't like.

So...how about them hd duds?

That's not fair. You cut out a paragraph to make it seem like I was attacking you (did you miss the winking guy at the end of my reply to you?).

I said multiple times I wasn't trying to tell anyone what to say... just providing my perspective on how others may view our actions, and provide a suggestion on how we can try to maintain both a professional forum in one area and more of a fansite forum in another. Nothing more...

Fair enough if you wasn't calling me childish then I apologize for thinking that. But I will be the first person to say I have gone to other forums and debated them but never antagonize them. But some of them are just horses a--.. As I said before until I get it out of my system I will call them duder's

I think you'll find that for the most part no one here is telling anyone how to act. We're all just expressing our own opinion on the matter. And I've stated it earlier in this post, that I thought that the OP's thread title was a bit inflamatory. I think that's more than obvious based on the discussion that this has brought up.

That being said, I think that this has represented a diverse and fairly accurate sum-up of the members on here. We're not all into slinging insults, and some of us are just having some fun. Others are just being @$$es.

In the end, we're all for the same cause, with differing opinions and ideas. Hey, that's what makes the world go round. Oh, and for the record, the OP has long since signed out, so if anyone feels the need to throw insults at him, you're going to go unanswered for a while... just sayin'...

I don't have a problem with that. That's all I was doing as well.

I'm hoping this is just a general statement and not directed at me. I don't believe I threw any insults at anyone.

Though you've raised some good points regarding overall conduct, if we were to draft a "Format War Etiquette" do you think it would do any good? This is an internet forum and as such it does have some rust and barnacles on its hull. That just happens when you sail the oceans. The mods already do a good enough job of keeping this site relatively clean.

HD DUD does have the advantage of emphasizing that we are talking about something other than standard DVD. I doubt that anyone seriously considering adopting blu-ray would decide not to when they come to this forum and read "HD DUD". If so, then they may not deserve Blu-ray anyway.

In the classical Latin alphabet there is no difference between U and V. So this just brings it up-to-date.

You've put in your 2 dollars, so here are my 2 cents

I'm a little confused.. when I first saw the term 'HD-DUD' I got a little chuckle out of it, and still do. I did not however, in any way percieve it to be a slam or offensive.. merely a name based on facts, that describes the HD-DVD format better than the name that was chosen for it.

Quote:
dud /dʌd/ Pronunciation Key - [duhd]
–noun 1. a device, person, or enterprise that proves to be a failure.
While HD-DVD hasn't COMPLETELY proven the above yet, we all know it's GOING to happen.
Quote:
HD DVD - "The HD (High-Definition) DVD standard is designed to be the successor to the standard DVD format" - Wikopedia
Just as surely as we know that this ISN'T going to happen.

An insult? Not really.. sounds more like an accurate description of what HD-DVD's past/future holds. And while I may not use the term in my signature (no, I am not neutral) I don't find it offensive and when you think about it - it makes a lot of sense.

Oh, I know I'm so going to burn for this, but I'm tired, and it just popped into my head. HD DUD is just worn out. We need something new and fresh if we're going to have those on here who insist on throwing out insults at them, so how about something a bit more accurate, and more with the times?

HD DED. Let's put the nail in the coffin already Warner...

If I, or anyone else wants to call HDduds, Duds, so be it. IMHO, this thread has got to be the dumbest thread started. Last time I checked this forum it was called Blu-Ray.com. I am pro blu-ray, and anti-DUD! Everyone has their opinion so why worry or even complain about calling HD DUDS? Who really cares about insulting the other format. Does it really violate someones rights? Does it really hurt their feelings? Are we committing a crime by referring to HDduds as DUDS? I dont say DUD because its funny, I say it because thats what HDDud is going to be as a format a DUD. Lets just worry about winning the format war over HD Dud! Im going to sleep well tonight knowing that Blu is getting stronger and will eventually prevail! Go Blu!
