Australia Someone please help me with Bend it Like Beckham?

If there is even one person on this board who is buying this film, would you please report back if it's region free AND if the extras are in SD 480i or PAL?

PLEASE!!!!

I've wanted this one for a long time and was really disappointed the UK version was locked.

If the Notting Hill thread has only one reply, I'm not sure how much attention this film is going to get, but I'm hoping that just one person will be buying it and knows how to confirm the region status and whether the extras are PAL or not.

I don't see a release of this in the states any time soon, so this might be my last chance to get it. Any help at all or a lot of help, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I can't imagine 100s of posts on this!

You'll have to keep an eye on http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b and http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Discs/Disc.asp?ID=30609

It is listed in some places as "region free" but I'd not trust that.

Stores:
http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/shop/pr...ucts_id=67275&
http://chaos.com/artist/bend-it-like...am/168275.html

Maybe worth emailing the distributor http://iconmovies.com.au/Movies/B/Be...keBeckham.aspx

A film I have not seen, was quite a hit here in the UK.

First movie ever that I saw Keira Knightley in.

Thanks, that one site with ALL the movie listings doesn't even include the UK version which came out months ago. That doesn't bode well for any info on this release anytime soon.

The release info is all over the charts. Chaos says it region free, the other site says region 4 for the blu ray and that's not even an option and the one reviewer with the placeholder had the blu ray listed as 576i PAL and no blu ray is in PAL. The SD features could be, but that's not how it's presented on his form.

I really hope someone just buys it and reports back. Region free and not PAL special feature...PLEASE.

But the price is REALLY high for a catalog. Shakespeare in Love is half the price of this release.

I would recommend contacting Icon direct to confirm as has been suggested. They are generally courteous and happy to confirm info.

Easy life: import a Region B player or make your PC region free (you can change your Blu-ray ROM rgion if you have one to any region 5 times or extend it very easily).

I gave up on regions 10 years ago. It's a faff.

Damn, I've been told that the blu-ray is region free but that the special features are in SD PAL. I was THIS close to getting it and now, who knows if or when it gets a US release.

Everyone predicted it would be region B locked, like the UK release, then I heard it might be region free and I was really hopeful.

I can't understand why a company decides to make something region free and then doesn't do the special features in 480i. I mean, if you're in Europe and you wanted this, you probably have the UK release.

So most of the out of Australia purchases would go to the States, where most people don't have players that convert PAL.

I suppose I'd buy it for $15 or less (maybe even $10), even though it would be against my rule of never buying a BD import where I can't access the special features, but this is selling for nearly $30. And I WOULD have paid that if the special features had only been done in 480i.

So disappointing. I don't know why, but this little film was really something I wanted on blu too.

Is there something new on the Australian Blu-ray?

When I look at the DVD comparisons they are all pretty good: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=2502

Just put the US DVD in the Blu-ray box and then you have a dual release! I do that when there's no or very few extras. The Blu-ray is what I want and I can always get the extras from a DVD. DVD is still king for back-catalogue extras and Blu-ray is dragging its feet so it's worth keeping old DVDs. In fact there's no reason to assume everything that came out on DVD will see the light of day of Blu-ray.

As for the PAL thing (rather silly as you say) that format will play on any PC in the world. As long as you have a Blu-ray ROM of course. You may not at the moment but will eventually so you'll have access sometime.

Meantime, shove the DVD in with the Blu-ray and buy the film you like

Even though I have a BD player in my laptop, I really don't enjoy watching my movies on it.

As far as making a combo, I've done that only 1 time before, so that I could have Once.

I don't like doing it, but it would be a no-brainer for $15, because, as you mentioned, I don't think this film will be released in the US anytime soon. But, for reasons I can't figure out, Bend it like Beckham is going for $30. That's a not very popular catalog release for 2 times as much as, say, Shakespeare in Love.

That said, I'm probably going to bite and do what you said. I've wanted it and now that I know the movie will play on my stand alone BD players, I don't think I can wait and I don't expect it to drop significantly for quite a while. Having to change to the SD DVD to watch the extras on a $30 catalog title is a tough pill to swallow, but I've wanted this, was disappointed the UK release was locked, and waited patiently for months for this version to be released, so I need to get it now.

It helps quite a bit that December wasn't an expensive month for me with BDs and January and February will be and, at least, I don't have to repurchase the standard dvd, as I didn't sell mine off because I thought the Australian version might be locked. Might as well cough up that $30 now.

Icon generally drop their prices after 3 months (example: The Descent 2 went from $39.98 to $15.98, The Children went from $39.98 to $19.98, all 3 months after original release)

As Icon are technically independent, they tend to have pricing higher than the major studios. Madman are similar in pricing.

If your laptop has a BD drive... it most likely has HDMI out too? Couldn't you just plug your laptop into your TV to watch B locked or PAL content? (That's how I watch my Region A locked Criterion discs)

Thanks, but I'm just going to suck it up and pay the $30 now. As I mentioned, the first 2 months, probably 3 are already filling up. In fact, I'm already at my budget for media for January and February 2011.

I don't know exactly when it will drop, so considering I didn't spend my budget in December, I might as well get it over with.

I have the HDMI port, but for the effort that it takes to switch out the cords, it's probably just as easy to watch the special features on my old Standard Definition disc and just make it one combo case, with the blu ray on one side and the old dvd on the other.

It's not perfect, I've made this exception only one other time, but it's my old choice. For most films, I'd wait it out, but I've been wanting this since the UK release was announced and I can't wait any longer.

I should be ordering from Chaos early next week.

You may want to check out what postage is like from these guys: http://dvdownunder.com.au/item.php?r...etter&id=44849

Their international customer price for the title is $24.44 which is pretty reasonable assuming the shipping is OK.

Since this is only £10.93 @ Amazon UK have you not considered a Region B player which will allow for NTSC output?

The reason I have a couple of players is because of the savings I make but more importantly I am unrestricted.

The NTSC is easily overcome and you should think about it. Many many people in the USA and Canada (especially due to the French speaking parts) have no problem with non-NTSC stuff.

Ask what other people are using in the player section or http://forum.dvdtalk.com/international-dvd-talk-12/

I pretty much have to order from Chaos. There was just one company that told me they contacted Icon and confirmed it was region free. There really hasn't been independent confirmation from anyone on this site or any other. Chaos is the only site that lists it as region free, so if it does turn out the info was wrong and it's locked, then Chaos would have to refund all of my money because the other sites state region B locked, and Chaos doesn't. They've always been reputable to me, so if you order something based on their info, which turns out to be wrong, then I can't see them holding not taking responsibility.

Thanks, though.

Even they charge a tad more than Chaos. Besides, Chaos has already sent me an e-mail letting me know that if it does, as unlikely as that may be, turn out to be region B locked, that they will refund both shipping charges and the cost of the BD.

Considering what I'm paying for it, that little guarantee is worth a good deal to me. And I also have purchased from them before, so I don't have to worry about how their customer service works if there is a problem. They've always been great to me.

Well, I ordered it from Chaos along with Shakespeare in Love. Came in at just over $40, so it wasn't TOO bad. Probably not all that more than those two titles would have sold for on release day in the US, assuming they were $15-$20 as most catalogs are.

Chaos has 2 weeks backorder for BILB, so I might not see it until next year, but at least I'll finally have it and, probably a first for me, I'm the only one on this site who has that title in their collection.

I add something to my collection when it's paid for on imports. I add US releases 1 week ahead of their release date, because PRIME usually ships early and I don't want to get behind. But since Chaos, unlike Amazon, already charged me, I think it's fair to add them now and not when they arrive. Like anyone cares about that.

I also ordered the theatrical release of Dances with Wolves from the UK, so my ordering for 2010 is officially over and Easy A, Salt, and DWW will be the last 3 that I will receive this year.

Just a heads up, but I saw this in store tonight and the back cover does show ABC. Although I wouldn't take back covers as gospel this plus the other info around stating that it's region free should be a good indicator you'll be OK.
