i've been waiting for this game for a long time. while i've only owned 1 & 2, i skipped 3 and read about all the problems with it. so, far everything i've read about 4, is that they are aware of the problem and will work to fix the problems that 3 had.

Am I the only one that is glad to see Namco dispense with the goofy looking costumes and return to the more realistic look from Soul Calibur 2?

This game looks sooo good. Best fighting game of 2008, without a doubt.

Soul Calibur for DC's the only fighting game I've ever spent a LOT of time with thanks to the Mission Battle mode.

Too ****ing cool looking!!!!!!!
Man, I sure hope they come out with SC IV action figures (you know, the ultra-detailed action figures they came out with for SC (Dreamcast) and SC II (all systems). My fave SC action figure is Nightmare.....one bad-ass lookin' beast!!!!!!!
Can't wait for this game next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What was wrong with 3? Other than, "I ran out of vocabulary to describe how sick it was".

I didn't dig the strategic play all that much, but I can do tournament fighting for days.

What wasn't wrong with 3?

Character designs were ugly, to say the least, save the exception of the very cool looking Zasalamel. But that's more than countered by the sheer stupid look of Astaroth, Cervantes, Ivy, etc.

Loading times were atrocious.

The strategy mode was made entirely of fail. Horrible storyline, terrible gameplay.

The only thing that was good was that the game was more balanced once you actually got into the fighting - Ivy isn't as dominant, Talim got shafted (but a bit too much since she's just... terrible... in SC3), and the lower tier characters like Astaroth got a nice healthy bump in power.

Very nice to see an HD treatment of this series. This title is very near and dear to me as it was the first major title I had the pleasure of working on in my early years in the game industry, but back then it was called Soul Edge.

Animation for Mitsurugi, Namco had serveral houses do the motion capture and animation for each of the characters. We were lucky enough to get t the gig as most of the houses used were based in Japan, but during the early 90s motion capture was still so very new.

Fascinating (and might I say that was some truly eye-popping work on Soul Edge, especially as Mitsurugi ended up being such a popular character due to his ease of use). I never realized that the animations in the original Soul Edge/Soul Blade were mo-capped, but in retrospect it makes a lot of sense, as they were miles ahead of the competition at the time (Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, et. al.). I remember how impressed I was at the fluidity of motion when I first saw the game in an arcade, and I suppose I always assumed it was simply awesome animation skills.

Could you perhaps share your thoughts on the recent installments, and what you think of where Namco has taken the series since your involvement?

I started playing the 'Soul -' series with Soul Calibur on Dreamcast so I missed your work but the character you worked on inspired me to choose my domain/website name.

I was only involved in the animation and motion capture aspect of the game, so I can't really comment on much of the game mechanics. When it left our hands we acutally never even got any footage of the animations, ingame or otherwise. In fact our group found out the real name of the project when the game first hit the Japanese arcades (via gaming magazines), internally we called the project by the last name of the producer who brought in the job. All the cloak and dagger stuff was probably due to the fact that at the time were the only American group working on the project, so Namco was not forthcoming with any type of info.
