3:10 To Yuma
I am not a big fan of Westerns but I dont hate them. Pros: -Acting was superb. I am a big fan of both Christian Bale and Russel Crow, so seing them together was like being in 9th cloud. Supporting cast was very well chosen as well. -Cinematography, direction, and techincally all technical elements of filmaking where done superbly, especially in the context of a western. It did really feel like a "good old western". ![]() Cons: -There where to many plot gaps which at least I didnt get. [Show spoiler] Overall, I think the filmed lacked something to make it great. I am not sure why but this film left me unimpressed. 4/5 Last edited by Marcus Wright; 12-21-2010 at 11:25 PM. |

12 Angry Men - 1957
Obviously this was on DVD, so PQ and AQ can't be rated. For such an old movie, it holds up very well in terms of script, story, acting, and overall quality. I really enjoyed this movie because there were twists (of some sort), and new things popping up every once in a while that would make you go "hmmmm." I can't really give away much in terms of the story or plot, except that this was a courtroom drama unfolding in a closed room of 12 jurors. Quite entertaining and enjoyable.... I really recommend this movie if you haven't seen it. 8/10 |

Apocalypse Now (Original Theatrical Release)
Director: Francis Ford Coppola Writers: John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola Mains: Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall "The Horror........" Plot (IMDb): During the on-going Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade Green Beret who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe. My Take: This movie has been on my MUST SEE list for a while now and i've finally got around to viewing it. In all honesty i didn't receive what i thought i would. Not saying that in a bad way but this movie was allot different than what i expected. Its still hard for me to soak it in all but for the most part this is almost a PERFECT movie. It takes you deep into the minds of those who are destroyed by war. Coppola takes you deep into the actions and minds of our soldiers during war, and he does a great job at it. Some of the scenes of the movie are very shocking, and very cold. He really got my attention with the low light scenes, really dragging you into the horror of the film. My favorite character was Robert Duvall his character takes you pretty deep into the "good" soldiers point of view but if you put him side by side with the "crazed" Colonel! [Show spoiler] Its hard to take sides with this film. Some would believe that the Colonel makes good sense, and some would disagree. Its a movie that i have to watch again to full take in what it offers. I'll never forget the chopper scene, the music and the mayhem was at a all time great. At times it feels like this movie is just on Auto but right when you get comfortable, something gritty happens or Coppola gets real nasty with the camera shots. That ending speech from the Colonel was amazing! It seriously was the best part of the entire film. So deep, so so deep, and they way Coppola shot it. All i can say is wow! Conclusion: This movie has allot to offer and i truly believe that i need to watch it again or at least watch the Redux version. Its deep and really plot heavy. The story runs as deep at roots but its hard for me to take it all in. From what i've gather the movie is Great. I dont believe that its the best war movie "as acclaimed" but i think its the best movie when it comes to the psyche of a soldier. Once again i really appreciated Duvall's character. The man cared for his troops and that means the world to me. He drop napalm just so his boy's could surf. Enjoyed the movie quite a bit! Now its time to see the extended version. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 4.5/5 Note: PQ 4.5/5 AQ 5/5 GREAT! Last edited by lDlisturb3d; 12-22-2010 at 02:20 AM. |

Plus, Black Hawk Dawn was something really differrent. Its a Beast Of Its Own. I think its shows at least techniqally what was is like the best. Seven Samurai. Movie - 5/5 Wow, jut wow. This is filmaking at its finest. Arguably the best movie ever made. Itys influence on moviemaking can not be underappreciated. The techniques used in this movie deifned filmaking for decades to come. This is the gradfather of all action movies and not only. In a word, this is Kurosawas at his prime. As for the movie itself, it is just perfect in every possible way. Deep character study, great cinematography, excellent music, first-rate action and more. PQ - 4/5 While its not a letdown, I thought they could have done better judging from another Criterion release of Yojimbo. in particular, the dark scenes where too dark, and clarity overall wasnt first rate. I could feel that this movie was very old. AQ - 4.5/5 AQ is much better. Its almost as good as it could be. Dont expect bombasting sounds as this is a limited sound design by its nature. Neverrtheless, clarity is first rate and everyone should be satisfied with the results. Overall -5/5 This is a giant movie which makes its blu ray release one of the most important events of the year 2010. If you are a serious movie collector, or a fan of Kurosawa or Classic movies or even Westerns, than this movie comes highly recommended. Otherwise, everyone else should rent it and see at least once in their lifetime. |

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL
Film #6 Year: 2008 Director: Nicholas Stoller Starring: Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Bill Hader, and Paul Rudd Genre: romantic comedy What Made Me Want to See This? Mila Kunis EXTENDED EDITION (112 minutes) Having not seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall since it arrived on DVD in 2008, this was like watching a film for the very first time seeing as I could barely remember the film. And while on the surface it feels and looks a lot like a Judd Apatow film, it’s very different. The atmosphere and characters, and the writing are all different. Better? Debatable. I think I’d have The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Superbad ahead of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but FSM is definitely better than Knocked Up and a few others like this. Big +1 for Mila Kunis ![]() Another big +1 for Jason Segel who does a phenomenal job. He plays the role of Peter incredibly well. It’s hard to pull off being awkward, upset, depressed, lonely, confused, charming and sad all at the same time while just looking goofy and not completely defeated, but Segel pulls it off with perfection. Something his “counterpart” Seth Rogen could NEVER do. Russell Brand also is completely hilarious here. He seems born for the role of the egotistical, but super nice and mild mannered rock star. At 112 minutes, the Extended Edition is a bit long, but the film is great as a whole. It’s not a straight up comedy, definitely a romantic comedy where there are moments / scenes that don’t have a lot of laughter. And I think the chemistry between Kristen Bell and Segel was terrific, as well as Segel and Kunis, which made all the relationships in the film feel genuine and real. Haven’t seen Get Him to the Greek yet, but definitely interested to see it, even though I’m not the biggest Jonah Hill fan, but I must at least rent it since it’s a sort of, kind of sequel to Marshall. But FSM is definitely a keeper in my book and will be worth a purchase for around $10 or less. Recommendation: High PQ: 4/5 AQ: 4/5 Technical Score: 4/5 Enjoyment Level Score: 4.5/5 “really liked it” Final Verdict: 4/5 |
