I'm just looking for an example outside of the Rooneys where a coach got an interview thanks to the rule and actually got the job. Leslie Frazier has been the token minority interview for years but has never been hired as a head coach. He is now an interim head coach and has a chance at keeping the job but it's no thanks to the Rooney Rule. Ron Rivera has been a token interview numerous times and has never gotten a head coaching job. Most examples of minority head coaches in the NFL are coaches that were promoted inside their organization or successful coordinators. Of the 6 current minority head coaches (excluding Frazier) three, Raheem Morris, Jim Caldwell, and Mike Singletary were promoted from inside the organization. Two, Lovie Smith and Marvin Lewis, were defensive coordinators for teams that made the Super Bowl and were very much in demand and in no way got their jobs thanks to the Rooney Rule (Lewis also was hired before the Rooney Rule existed). Only Mike Tomlin's hire appears to have anything to do with the Rooney Rule and even that's not completely true since the team had fulfilled the rule.

Not just that, but it also gives minority coaches the experience of going through the process. It gives them access to the owners so they can learn but the titans of this industry want, incorporate into what they do, and keep trying. I'm all for the rule, I just wish there was a better way to implement it. Does anyone think Jason Garrett won't get the job in Dallas?

He'll probably get it. But only if bigger names like Gruden and maybe Fisher flatly refuse the job.

Which is where the CBA for next year comes in. The owners won't want to lock in a coach at $4-6M/yr in a year with zero revenue. It's a great time to be a young inexperienced coach.

I'm in favor of the rule but agree there needs to be a better way to implement it. I also wish there were more minorities being interviewed. Leslie Frazier has been interviewed 6 times, and all 6 times didn't get the job. A lot of teams will just interview a minority on their current staff to satisfy the rule. I have little doubt that the Broncos will satisfy the Rooney Rule by interviewing current interim head coach Eric Studesville but he has no realistic chance of getting the job.

Since we're on a college page there is one state that has a version of the Rooney Rule. In Oregon a state school must interview a minority for any head coaching vacancy. The rule just went into effect in 2009 so neither Oregon or Oregon State's football programs have had openings since then.

Yeah, it's likely Garrett will get the Cowboys job, Frazier has a great shot at the Vikings job, current Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will probably get the Bengals job, and the Panthers will likely hire someone with little name recognition for their vacancy. The Broncos will probably hire Gary Kubiak if he is fired in Houston. The only teams I could potentially see making big hires are the Browns, who would be interested in Gruden, and possibly Cowher going to the Giants,Dolphins, or Texans.

Which brings us to how that position became vacant. During the press conference where they announced that Ralph Friedgen would not be Maryland's next head coach, Athletic Director Kevin Anderson also announced that they would buy his contract out using entirely Athletic Department funds. Even University president Wallace Loh said during the press conference that he didn't know where the money would be coming from. Well, I know a guy who has a bunch of dough and a certain fondness for the Maryland football program. Just saying...
lol no way Plank and others fronted that money to get someone like Malzahn, or Edsall.

They need to get this done! I've been googling leach's name like every 2-4 hours, since that report came out !!!

Temple has apparently hired Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio as their new coach. Earlier today there were reports that Addazio had taken his name out of consideration and was going to Texas as the offensive line coach, but apparently that was incorrect. Addazio was widely blamed for the Florida offense's struggles this year and many fans were trying to get him fired.

I hated his play calling and using Pouncey as a center was insane.

Temple head coach seems like a big step down from Texas assistant or Florida assistant coach.

Unless he wins a little bit if you blow it hard at florida which I think he did, and then fail at Texas you're pretty much done as a top tier guy in my op.

I'd agree that it's a step down from Florida's offensive coordinator but he wasn't returning to that position and he'll likely make more than twice as much money at Temple than he would as Texas' offensive line coach.

One surprise in the Temple job search is that former Notre Dame coach and current ESPN broadcaster Bob Davie interviewed twice for the job. Davie hasn't coached since being fired at Notre Dame in 2001 and I don't even remember the last time any interest was shown by or towards him as a coach.

It's unreal how overrated some of these assistant coaches are. Just look at all the job offers that Auburn offensive coach is getting. And he basically did nothing but ride Cam Newton's back to garner all that praise. Any fool can be successful with Can Newton running their offense.

Just an interesting tidbit on Charlie Strong, he just got one of the biggest recruits Louisville has gotten in a long time. Teddy Bridgewater has picked Louisville over Miami, Florida, LSU, and South Florida. He's a program changing player and is the perfect type of player to really cause excitement in a fan base.

lol guess the new guys couldn't lock him up that will be good for us when Leach is dropping BOMBs on teams defenses with that passing game

That's odd. Bridgewater is from that Miami Northwestern HS dynasty. I was sure he'd pick Miami or at least some Florida school. He's a blue-chip QB. The Canes coaching issues probably hurt them in this case. Either was Louisville getting him is huge for that school.

I'd rather go be a god in Louisville then just another quality face on FL or at the U.

And what if Maryland and Leach can't agree on money? Leach won't come cheap, I'm pretty sure of that. Malzahn would probably be a good pickup, but he has no college head coaching experience. I'm glad we were able to get Golden, he is really talking a big game and getting the fans pumped up. What he did at Temple was nothing short of a miracle, I'm salivating at the mouth imagining what he can do in south Florida.

He and Randy Shannon had built a close relationship, and when Miami fired him they lost Bridgewater.

They better get leach or I'm staging a riot , Malzahn's a joke and had a great QB for his best season and I don't want that guy at all, we've had a coach who can just quietly win every now and then and nobody cares (I'm not even sure that guy could do that). I have no doubt our boosters can pay Leach and if he wins and gets the lights and the bandwagon fans back on the program I have no doubt they have more then enough capital in this area to re-up him. Plank alone if he sold his shares would net around 500 million and UA is still a growing company (and thats just one rich guy in one of the top wealthiest states (#4 on cnn's thing #2 if you are using populations over 3.5 million) in the country). Theirs money here but people won't spend it for a bunch of Gator Bowls and Military Bowls

I just have a hard time believing they are willing to pay Friedgen's $2 mill buyout yet not enough to bring in Leach. Surely they'll get this done.

The NCAA has found the USC football team, men's basketball and women's tennis teams guilty of major infractions. Penalties include four years of probation, a two-year bowl ban for the football team, a one-year basketball postseason ban for the basketball team, vacating of wins and the loss of 30 football scholarships over three years.
This is devastating news for the Trojans and will undoubtedly have a negative effect on the football team this fall. We also could see players jumping ship and electing to transfer. Stay tuned. Jun. 10 - 7:15 pm et
