Default PS3 hook up question

My nefew has a PS3 hooked up to a 65" RCA DLP TV.We have tried to get it to play through both HDMI and component but could'nt get it to work. The only way we can get a pic is to use the old RF input. Can someone tell me what the problem is? This is not the first time I have seen this.Awhile back he has a small LCD that showed the same result.Yet when I brought it to my house and hooked it up to my Panasonic plasma it came right on.

Did you change the video output settings on the PS3 so it uses the HDMI out?

Try manually checking off the resolutions that your TV supports. Maybe the Ps3 is outputting in 1080p or something when your TV only supports 1080i (for example).

Can you move the joystick around and hear sound? If so then it's probably set on the wrong resolution like the previous poster mentioned. If you power it up by holdind down the on button for 5 seconds or so it will power up in 480I mode and you should see something.

Holding the power button down when starting the system up will revert A/V settings to factory defaults. This means that your video output will be set back to composite (Yellow video cable, White/Red audio). So if you do this make sure to connect those cables back up again so you can see something (you need to see the screen to setup HDMI video output).

Here's most likely what you need to do...

#1. Make certain that both your composite cables (PS3 default "in the box" cables) AND HDMI cable are connected to the TV. This will give you the composite image, which the PS3 is defaulted to.

#2. Go to the Display Settings section on the PS3 menu screen and select the Video Output Settings option. Then choose HDMI followed by Automatic.

#3. The screen will blacken for a few seconds and then should reappear with an option to keep the current settings or not. Select Yes.

I believe the problem lies in the PS3 not being able to read only your HDMI connection. A couple friends of mine had the same problem and the trick was being able to see the screen in order to tell the PS3 that an HDMI connection was available. They had disconnected the composite cable completely, connected the HDMI, turned everything on and expected it to just work. Not that easy when the PS3 is setup to send the video signal to its composite port. And trying to change settings on a black screen is impossible. So, having both composite AND HDMI cables connected at the same time, no matter what, the PS3 image will be visible for settings adjustments.

That is one of the downfalls of the PS3. You just can"t take it and plug it in another TV and play. And I couldn't find the reset feature in the manual. It was a hour wasted one day when I went to a family gathering and wasted to play Buzz!

Going from composite, With just a HDMI connected when you hold down the power button for 5 seconds it will pop a screen up that will say a HDMI has been connected, click Yes and it will set it to your tv's highest resolution. It will also ask you to confirm the resolution, click yes.

are you sure you holding the power button down long enough to hear the second beep? It's suppose to have the first beep when turing it on, then hold it down till you hear the another beep sound and it should pop up on the tv screen asking you if you if you want to output the video using HDMI.

it will detect whatever connections you have plugged in and ask you which you would like to use. It basically resets your connections...heres a youtube video showing how to do it but you cant really here the beeps. not my video

So the fact that you wasted one hour for you not knowing about the PS3's video reset feature is considered a "downfall" in your book? First thing I would do is look in forums like this one from knowledgeable PS3 folks before I passed judgement on the system. I certainly would hate to see what would be considered worse than a downfall

This isn't completely true. I've reseted the system with an HDMI cable plugged in and it went to minimal settings. I've never used the cables that came with the system. It's always been connected via HDMI.

Change the cable.

I've just got 2 60GB machines from Sony. Turned them on with HDMI cable inserted. Pressed YES at the message and went from there. 2 seconds.
