It is better to have the Black Bars then to stretch the picture. When you stretch the picture you are loosing content on each side & the picture will not look right. Enjoy it the way it was meant to be seen

problem for me is its 21.5 inch screen, to get great qual i need to sit a bit back, half the screen is black barred :| and i have no green to go buy a new tv nor will i in the future.

For a screen that size, the optimal seating distance, according to THX standards, is 2.8 feet. Sitting close will make the picture better.

i imagine these transitions went something like this for the masses

from radio to tv
gosh darn how do i get rid of that picture thing, i just want to listen to it! the picture is too distracting

from black and white to color
how do i make my brand new color tv black and white again? where in the manual does it say what knob to turn? i know the thing about color, but i prefer black and white

from color ntsc/pal 4:3 to hd, those black bars are so annoying! i prefer watching my SD channels stretched to fullscreen, i dont see what the big deal about hd is, the quality seems worse to me. if i sit far away it i cant see it as well so it must be better.
