The high-definition transfer is clearly serviceable, and there is nothing really to be overly upset about. However, the Korean master which Tartan/Palisades Tartan had to work with was clearly produced - quite some time ago, if I may speculate - with SDVD in mind.
I am definitely not in the "every Blu-ray release should use a brand new high-definition transfer sourced from a brand new 4K scan of the negative" camp because a) not all films will benefit from such a treatment, and for many such a treatment would actually be impossible/overkill because of lost/irreversibly damaged negatives etc, and b) because in this economy such demands are simply unrealistic - but as far as Oldboy is concerned, because of the unique nature of the film and because it is such a recent film, there are clearly inherited limitations with the current high-definition transfer that can be effectively addressed. That's all. ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 01-19-2011 at 04:08 AM. |
