confused... I keep hearing that HR on HD DVD is outselling HR on BD... but then we get this:

Quote:
My latest is showing about 1.7:1 in favour of Blu for Harry Potter 5 but that could have changed on Sunday or today, I doubt it though.

BU is doing above expectations for HD DVD, but that's only because expectations weren't all that high to begin with. It will not sell better than Transformers though which did about 120k in its first week.

Harry has been out in front for Blu since last Tuesday when it was released. That is something I am sure of.

I fully expect Blu to win this week and make it a whitewash for the year.
When will the numbers be official and uncontestable?

thanks!

Mark my words, the response we will get if we win the week is that "well you had both an Amazon BOGO and a Best Buy BOGO." I have heard from numerous people that the reason why we win week to week is because of all the BOGO. I said, I don't really care how we win, the movies are cheaper for me and that is all that counts.

"hearing" is the operative word here. What you're "hearing" is the spin because the loser side is desperate. Can we please friggin STOP THIS "I'm hearing" stuff?

Max's company, whichever one that is, gets the numbers for the employees to see. Max's track record is about as good as it gets. He's a verified INSIDER. Enough said.

END OF STORY.

Believe Max's numbers, he is trustworthy.

The other numbers, take with a grain of salt.

I am sure WB is looking at all this! With such HUGE sale numbers for BD over HD DVD, more sales for HP, and more support and updates for BD... how can they not go BD exclusive?

Yep, indeed.
I would not consider Dave Vaughn a 100% reliable source, though his numbers for the Nielsen's have been accurate of late. But his numbers for Pirates were WAY off before it came out.

They already are, but Nielsen won't reveal them until Wed (subscribers) or Friday (the rest of us peons).

Having said this, read Esox' post. Info from Max may be relied upon.

Given that Uni is the only major-major studio w/o a 100k 1st week hdm title, if they have any energy left to drum up hd dvd support, they will announce wk1 Bourne numbers by wednesday.

Which means we have little to do but speculate in the meantime unless some kindly insider would leak the numbers beforehand.

If however Uni stays quiet (like Paramount during Shrek3 wk), then it didn't do as well as we expect. I'd be surprised if Bourne doesn't do reasonably well, as it is the right genre to sell hdm. However, I'd be also very surprised if Bourne can outsell TF or PotC3 or 300-BD.

There's nothing else (except maybe-perhaps HP) that can outsell 300-combined week1, Bourne won't do that either, I'd be very surprised if Bourne can even cross 120k using HMM numbers. My prediction for Bourne3 : between 80k and 120k.

What about the box-set? That figure Max shared seemed to be just for Harry Potter 5?

Wouldn't worry about it. Three reasons:
1.) a decent amount of early adopter HD DVD folks imported Harry Potter 4 from the UK. I think this makes them more likely to buy the individual releases of the Harry Potter series.

2.)HD DVDers, in their little online co-ordinated efforts, probably tried to buy separately vs. the boxed set in order to help their unit sales in Nielsen.

3.)many times, with these day&date+boxed set releases (for example, Spiderman 3, Die Hard), when someone is quoting a sales # for the most recent sequel they are for the numbers including both the boxed set # of units + the individual release # of units since the movie is included in both SKUs. Perhaps Max can clarify this last point.

It doesn't really mean anything for the Nielsen's, but I just thought I'd bring up the fact that DVDEmpire.com posted their final numbers for last week:

63.82% vs. 36.18%

Those are only DVDEmpire.com numbers, not Nielsen numbers...

The two numbers can differ wildly... I just thought I'd mention them...

How do DVDempire.com numbers relate? Are they more or less acurate than Neilsens and why the disparity in ratios?

Again, they can wildly differ (last week's numbers for Blu-ray were much higher than DVDEmpire.com's numbers, but a week or two ago, Blu-ray's numbers were much lower than the Nielsen numbers). I assume BOGO's at other sites have a lot to do with that.

However, I still thought the DVDEmpire numbers were interesting, which is why I posted them.

Yeah. I know. But, I was still surprised to see such as big spread. I really thought it would closer from all sources.

Does DVD Empire post last weeks numbers. Would be interesting to see how they correlate.

Only thing that tracks nielsen numbers ... is nielsen numbers.

Each single site is at most a fraction of the total hdm pie. We've had weeks where dvdempire and amazon tracking went one way and yet the final tally showed exact opposites. (DH4 week is one example).

If BestBuy numbers are available, I'd trust BestBuy to be a better proxy for the final numbers as they appear to sell more HDM than anyone else.

Again, don't expect these numbers to reflect Nielsen's numbers. I just thought they were interesting is all.

DVDEmpire's numbers can vary wildly from the Nielsen's numbers.
