Default NIN "The Fragile" 5.1 release in 2014?

For those who are into NIN

Trent did an interview last week, he stated that The Fragile will see a 5.1 mix this year 2011. (now will this be Blu-ray or SACD..or DVD-Audio..I hope it isnt Dual Disc)

He and Atticus Ross are working on another soundtrack The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo..

Should be a good year for NIN..now if that damn Year Zero tv show would come out..

I will be in for sure, if it's in fact a BD-Audio. The chances of Trent releasing a SACD, Dual Disc or DVD-Audio at this point seems unlikely to me.

It's been in the works for quite some time and is being done through Artists In Residence.

The Pixies had 24/96 DVD-A and 24/192 Blu-ray, so perhaps The Fragile may be the same. One thing with AiR, I expect it to be expensive, but with an album like The Fragile I'll be ordering it no matter what the cost, which sucks, lol.

ok so looks like there are some NIN fans on here.

The interview was 80 mins long. Worth the listen and download.

Trents mother passed away shortly after the 1st of the year...

here is a link
http://www.theprp.com/2011/01/08/new...tattoo-remake/

http://www.mediafire.com/?m2tfxcysbv86rqq to download the interview

Only reason I brought up the SACD/DVD-Audio...was The Downward Spiral was put out on both formats.

With Teeth was released on Dual Disc.

Now Bd-Audio did see the release of Ghosts and The Social Network. Both are worth the purchase..

Now I did like the SHM-Cds that NIN put out...

The remastered Pretty Hate Machine was great.

I did not enjoy the remastered Pretty Hate Machine CD as much as I had hoped to. I like the mix, but the dynamics were cut in half. I think Barry Diament's mastering of the original was excellent.

The new CD I have found good for the car, and probably works well for people on the go. But on my main system I find the original more pleasant to my ears. I guess TR was trying to make PHM sound more like Year Zero or With Teeth with the mastering, but it's such a different album that it really benefits from the dynamics. I think if they had not pushed it quite as hard, leaving around 10dB of DR like The Beatles Stereo remasters, it would have been a knock out of the park, but 6dB of DR is just too much.

Of course many NIN fans here were bummed that it was only a remaster and not a deluxe edition, but hopefully when TR has a bit more time he can revisit the possibility of a 5.1 Blu-ray release.

LOVE the SACD of TDS, because the surround mix is just amazing, really opens up the record. It will be interesting to hear Alan Moulder's 5.1 mix and compare his surround design to TR/JB's work on TDS.

I hope the only version isn't some $300 Super Deluxe package, because I'll be out $300!

Some more info from a Q&A with Alan Moulder from October 2010.

It's funny you mention that album as I am currently doing a 5.1 mix of it and am re-living the whole thing.

I am not mixing The Fragile 5.1 on my SSL. I am mixing in the box mainly but with a few bits of analogue gear. I am running the 6 outputs through SSL channels for some analogue tone but I have a lot of audio that is "post mix" treated as we ran off a type of "stems" when doing the record. I am using these as it is easier and more faithful that just trying to re-create stuff we did on gear we probably don't have anymore. Having said that, I am just starting so who knows what will end up happening?
I can't imagine being anything other than thrilled with The Fragile Deluxe.

Thanks for the links to the interview, I look forward to giving it a listen later.

I just stumbled upon this thread, so forgive me if this is already common knowledge, but has there been any plans to re-release The Downward Spiral (my favorite NIN album)?

Aww yes, the interview was great. I have been using my pc and car as a means to listen to PHM..I suppose once I have my Olive 4HD, and my speakers...I can compare the two..as right now I can't really compare the two without my good stuff being here.(recently moved from the U.S. to the U.K...awaiting my stuff to get here from the U.S)

Have you had a chance to listen to PHM on the SHM-CD format? Just curious if that made any difference or not?

Speaking Super Deluxe Packaging...I do have the Ghosts box set, signed by Trent...now I did spend $300.00 on that one..lol

I've seen a couple sites incorrectly list the 2nd disc of the SACD release as being just a CD, when in fact all the extra tracks contained therein are stereo SACD as well. Burn and Dead Souls have never sounded so good.

I don't think it's the exact same tracklisting as Further Down The Spiral though is it?

And the DualDisc's DVD-A side contains videos and an interactive discography but none of the extra B-sides that appear on the SACD. I find the SACD to be more sonically pleasing than the 24/48 DVD-A version, but of course own both of them.

I had the original CD as well, signed from when I met Trent in 1994, but sold it to a collector on nin.com as I only ever looked at it when I was moving house, so figured it would be better utilized by someone else. Now I regret it, I should have got it framed!

I haven't, but my experience with SHM-SACD's and Blu-spec CD's leads me to believe that the material is irrelevant. That's just my opinion though, and I don't think poorly of those who believe the material makes a difference.

I do believe that if you extracted the data it would all still be 16-bit/44.1kHz CD-DA, so if the CD can't allow the data to be read, I wonder why it came out in the first place.

I do have Dire Straits S/T on SHM-SACD and it's wonderfully revealing, the best I've ever heard this album sound. But it's mastered to DSD from the analog tapes and so I believe the DSD is responsible, not the SHM-material.

well I am not sure..to me it indeed sounds different(when played from the cd) I have MetallicA, Guns N' Roses, NIN and Manson SHM-CDs they sound better for some reason, there are definetly things that I hear on the SHM-CDs that I do not hear on the other releases.

I have ripped my entire cd collection to my Olive 4HD...so I will agree on your statement. It is indeed 16-bit/44.1khz..but then again the Olive has some very awsome DACs built into the player and drastacily improves the sound of all cd's that I have put on the music server. I rip all my music in WAV(lossless) and it indeed take more space up then FLAC or mp3. I love the Olive 4HD..great product for the music lover.

but I will have to stand my ground and say that there are differences in clarity between a cd and a SHM-CD..yes the data on the cd is the same..but the way that it is played in your player...makes a difference(to me at least) I put on Mechanical Animals (Manson) and Chinese Democracy(GN'R) for my wife.....I asked her what sounded better...without telling her what version I had in..I have tested this on a friend as well playing ..And Justice For All(MetallicA) and he was able to tell the difference.

But to each is own...

I now play most of my music through my Olive...but I wish some bands would re-release their catalogs on Blu-ray...I am certain that there would be a huge difference in sound.

comparing the cd of Ghosts to the Blu-ray of Ghosts is a huge leap in sound quality.

that was one great Blu-ray..best concert I have seen on Blu.

I wish that things turned out different for LITS tour..as that tour was mind blowing...I believe at one time it was slated for Blu and would have 3-D elements..but it never came out..due to issues with Trents old record company.

but of course 500 gigs of material was released to the fans..and fans have put dvd and Blu-ray of the LITS tour...

But have you extracted each and compared the checksums using EAC to indeed confirm that they are identical masterings? If they are, the data should be identical. If they're not, the differences you're hearing in my opinion are due to one having better mastering than another.

For those interested in Fight Club, Reznor has said that David Fincher once approached him about doing music for a stage show adaptation.

(but it was a while ago now, doesn't seem to have momentum any more, don't hold your breath etc.)

The remastered Pretty Hate Machine was great.
NIN's old record company, Interscope/UMG, was responsible for the DualDisc, SACD and SHM releases. Now that they are off that label, I don't think those are in the cards for The Fragile. It's more than likely that the new reissue will be on vinyl, standard CD and BD, assuming NIN fulfills their remaining commitment to Interscope/UMG for a "greatest hits"-type compilation and can license the rights to do this reissue themselves.

I agree with dobyblue about the Pretty Hate Machine remaster, it's alright but could have used a little more dynamic range, and something weird happened with "Sanctified" because the bridge and ending are very slightly different than what was originally released in 1989. Still dig the bonus Queen cover "Get Down Make Love" though, and always did!

Actually, someone on the nin.com forums was going around telling people that the 2010 vinyl reissue of PHM had more dynamic range, but close inspection of a 24-bit digital rip reveals that it's just as limited as the CD. Likely pressed from a 24-bit source, though, so it might offer an upgrade if you like having vinyl.

It's really great to hear that Alan Moulder is re-creating the album in 5.1, I look forward to hearing the finished product in whatever form it takes!
