Default Are you a completist or you don't mind owning only a part of a series?

adding the first Resident Evil to my cart instead of the trilogy boxset made me wonder, do other people mind buying only 1 part of a franchise or they HAVE to complete them even if they don't like them
I'm planning to buy the first Matrix and avoid the other 2 too

Also, I only bought Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, and will buy the next 2 when they're out! but I may or may not complete the rest. I'm sure I'll buy some of them, but I can't see myself watching the first ones again

same goes for studios, directors, etc..
I love Pixar but I don't own Cars and Ratatouille, no plans on buying The Incredibles when it's out too! well, the later 2 I might cave in but Cars, No.

I only buy what I like. If that means buying only one movie from a series then so be it.

If I like the movies enough, I will complete the series. I see no point in getting movies I don't like, just to say I have the series.

i'll get them if i like the movies, but don't feel the need to HAVE to HAVE them just b/c they are part of a trilogy or whatever.

the problem i have is "will i want to watch this movie on it's own??"

matrix, lotr, harry potter, star wars i've seen enough where i don't have a problem throwing any movie in to watch even if they are out of order.

but will i want to watch resident evil 3 w/o watching the 1st 2 1st??

I'm fine not having Godfather III in my collection. Or The Matrix sequels.

X-3 pretty much obliterated whatever completist tendencies I might have had.

If I only like 2 movies of a trilogy, but buying just those 2 movies is more expensive than buying the trilogy itself, I'll just buy the trilogy.

I'm a little OCD so for the most part I like to own an entire series. Having said that I'll never buy Jaws 3 or 4 if they're released on blu. I would like to have the first two though.

i used to be. until i saw Revenge of the Fallen... i will NEVER own that. even if i ended up loving the remainder of the franchise, that blu-ray will NEVER be on my shelf, let alone held in my hands.

Boxsets can still work their evil magic, though.

Alien Anthology is a perfect example. Alien is the only one of the four I really, really like. Aliens is good, the other two...no real interest.

That all said, the Anthology is still kind of tempting. Not tempting enough to drop seventy bucks on two movies but surprisingly close.

While I would like to think that I am a completist when it comes to my collection, if I look it over I see I actually have a LOT of "holes" in it...some I would love to fill in, others...meh...

I usually buy the whole series with the exception of one. For the life of me I cannot justify buying Batman and Robin. LOL

If you have extra money you can't decide what to do with as far as sets go, I know someone that still has need of several Criterions.

Yeah, me

Speaking of which, there's a type of completist I don't think I could ever be. I don't go back to laserdisc days but I've been a Criterion fan for a while and I can't see snatching up everything they put out. Even setting aside expense, they have a pretty wide range. As much as I love their stuff they've put out a lot of things I wouldn't have any interest in owning.

It depends on the series. Harry Potter, yes. Chronicles of Narnia, no.

It all depends. Mostly, I just buy the ones I like but some sequels aren't too bad. I liked Starship Troopers but hated the other two like an ex-girlfriend so I didn't buy them.

I enjoyed the first two Robocop movies but wasn't confortable with the third but I bought it the trilogy anyways because it wasn't so bad.

I agree with these completely.

In terms of Pixar/etc....

I do have every Criterion Blu-ray released up to this point (including today's) but only have 250 or so of the DVDs with no plans on "completion"

I don't do this as a "completeist" though.... I do it because I enjoy watching them, studying the techniques/styles, etc... and many that I didn't enjoy (or even hated) upon first viewing, have become some of the ones I enjoy more than most now..... The "learning" aspect of it is a hobby to me.... so buying them isn't an attempt to "complete" it's like getting one more piece of a much bigger puzzle with every purchase. There are worse hobbies to be had

And I can stop at any time

EDIT:

Starship Troopers and Robocop are great examples.... I don't have either on Blu-ray, but will definitely get Robocop, and 'maybe' Starship Troopers (more because I don't have it on DVD than anything else) but I wouldn't put the sequels in my collection no matter what the price.... "I won't buy THAT for a dollar!"

I have a question for members that is somewhat similar to this topic:

If you buy a double pack, let's say the 2/$13 going on right now at Best Buy. Do you add those individually to your collection or do you add the set to your collection?

The reason I ask is because I have an app and another database used to keep track of my collection. The other database tracks by UPC. If I buy a two-pack though, it comes with it's own UPC and tracks it as one Blu-ray, and the same applies to box sets as well.
